DIXON

River Street to reopen this week Ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Thursday BY BRENDEN WEST bwest@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529 @BWest_SVM

DIXON – After 4 months of construction, River Street will reopen this week. A reopening ceremony, complete with a ribbon-cutting, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of River Street and Artesian Place. One of the City Council’s first objectives when its five members were sworn in back in May was to fix the major thoroughfare. “Repairing Dixon’s infrastructure was a key pledge I made when I ran for mayor,” Mayor

Li Arellano Jr. said in a news release Friday. “In the spirit of that promise, the new council and I launched this much-needed River Street repair as part of our 100-day pledge. It was one of our first major actions, and finishing it represents a promise kept.” The $3.4 million renovation of River Street from Ottawa Avenue to state Route 2 was funded with Rita Crundwell recovery funds. It includes new storm and sewer lines, curbs and gutters, asphalt pavement and street lighting. It also added a bicycle and pedestrian path along the north side of the street. River Street was also realigned. RIVER CONTINUED ON A5

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Visitors leave Loveland Community House, 513 Second St., Dixon, on Saturday after checking out the first Winter Farmers Market. Organizers said the vendor response was so good that they’ll need a larger room for the next market Nov. 21. Organizers would like to incorporate music and entertainers, too. Anyone, from artists to vendors, interested in joining the fun should call Nina Cooper at 815-244-4451 for more information. Jackie Virnich of Dixon makes a bracelet at her table at the market. Virnich participated in the regular outdoor farmers markets in Dixon this past season and is excited about the indoor counterpart. Both are run by the Dixon Park District. There were plenty of baked goods at the market, where most everything is homemade or home-grown.

MOUNT MORRIS – Veterans Day is a time when Americans honor the sacrifices made by their heroes. For veterans, the day can sometimes mean something different, as explained by Army veteran John Bowker, 66, of Mount Morris. In 1967, Bowker was John deployed Bowker to Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star – and though that service is something that will always be a part of him, there’s more to Bowker than his role in defending a nation’s freedom.
