DIXON – Open Sesame Children’s Learning Center is poised to buy Lincoln Elementary School for $501, to perma-

nently house its after-school and summer programs. The Dixon School Board will vote Wednesday to approve the sale. The school was closed after the 2013-14 school year to save money. Open Sesame, which

already leased space in the building, approached the district about buying it. In September, the school board voted to sell it for a minimum of $500. Open Sesame was the only bidder.

“When the board decided to put the school up for sale, we knew what we had to do,” said Darla Foulker, co-president of the Open Sesame board of directors. DAY CARE CONTINUED ON A3

A cloud of smoke drifts across neighboring farmland Monday afternoon after a fire broke out in the fluff pile – a pile of shredded car seats and the like – at Cimco Recycling, 13509 Galt Road in Sterling. The fire started around 4:20 p.m., and Sterling and Rock Falls firefighters were curling up the hoses and had everything under control by 7 p.m. Chief Gary Cook said the cause is thought to be a mechanical failure on the conveyor system. Workers had tried to put out the fire on one of the conveyors, but it ignited the nearby pile of residue. The blaze spread to the interior of the building, but firefighters were able to quickly put it out.

Weather, rut, farm equipment combine for perfect storm BY SHAW MEDIA AND THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Farmers, fires and four-footed fiends in a fever: The fall can be a dicey time for drivers, safety-wise. Not only is it harvest time, meaning time to keep a patient eye out for slow-moving, widebodied farm equipment on the roads, but now through the end of December also is deer-rutting season, a time of year when the number of hot-to-trot whitetails colliding with vehicles spikes. And, while it may be a wee bit too soon to add trick-or-treaters to the list of road hazards, there is yet another fall safety concern: field and other fire danger. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning Monday morning for all of northern Illinois because of strong winds, dry conditions, and low humidity. According to the NWS website: “A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will contribute to extreme fire behavior.” SEASON CONTINUED ON A4

Those railings will not handle the sand-blasting. They will turn into Swiss cheese, and we’ll have a major problem.
