Advance Auto closing Moving its employees, inventory to Clinton location BY ANGEL SIERRA asierra@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5695 @_angelsierra
STERLING – After only 2 years in town, Advance Auto Parts, 2930 E. Lincolnway, is closing up shop. Wednesday is its last day. Messages scrawled on the windows let passersby know that some items are on sale for up to 50 percent off. The store’s inventory and some of its 10 or so employees are moving to its Clinton, Iowa, location, according to a banner on the building. That store is now Advance’s closest location.
The company’s second-quarter earnings report for this year shows overall growth, and cites the “ongoing process of store evaluations” to accelerate next year’s profit goals. Fifty of more than 5,000 stores are scheduled for closure, according to the report, but locations are not listed. Calls to the business Thursday were referred to media relations, and were not immediately returned. Advance Auto Parts was the fifth national auto parts chain to move to the area, joining AutoZone, Carquest, NAPA Auto Parts and O’Reilly Auto Parts.
The 6,500-square-foot Sterling location was one of 200 new Advance Auto Parts stores, spokeswoman Shelly Whitaker said in 2013. Advance Auto Parts services professional mechanics and customers who work on their own cars. It offers some free services, such as replacing batteries and windshield wiper blades. The site, between the Fifth Third Bank and East Lincolnway, previously was owned by the mall. Watkins Sterling LLC has owned the building since December 2013.

OREGON | BLACK HAWK STATUE
Still under wraps, repairs Goal is to finish fixes next summer BY VINDE WELLS vwells@shawmedia.com Shaw Media
OREGON – Restoration work on the Black Hawk statue should be completed next summer, project engineer Amy Lamb-Woods said. Workers began cleaning the statue this summer and doing mock-ups to see what materials would work best for the repairs. “We are still in the mockup phase, and [Conservation of Sculpture & Objects Studio in Forest Park] is still working on submittals and samples,” Lamb-Woods, with Chicago-based Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, said in an email Tuesday.

The Selmi Pumpkin Patch and Fall Market is open this month from 8 am to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. RIGHT: Grant Scroggins, 1, of Sterling plays in the corn box at Selmi’s. While the weekdays are peppered with school tours, there’s a deal any half-pint fall fanatic would love over the weekends. Horse-drawn wagon rides, the corn maze, petting farm, haunted house and Little Spook’s Playhouse”all have individual admission costs, but youngsters can experience all of it for $6. For the full-size autumn aficionados, the market has a variety of food and drinks – including cider and apple cider doughnuts, of course. And it goes without saying that you can buy pumpkins of all sizes at the 60-plus-year-old farm, for 35 cents a pound.
