Great strides

With a gold-painted sledgehammer in hand, Sterling mayor Skip Lee takes a swing at a ceremonial door Thursday evening during the groundbreaking ceremony at Lawrence Lofts in downtown Sterling.

Sinnissippi Centers has come a long way since 1966. On Thursday, friends and staff reflected on where they’ve been and what the future holds BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers

DIXON – Measuring its footprint over the past 50 years, Sinnissippi Centers’ shoe size has grown 10-fold. After a particularly tough year vying for state funds to keep up services to thousands of people in the four-county area, the Sinnissippi community breathed a little easier Thursday to reflect on the strides made during the past half century. “This is like being able to take a deep breath,” Sinnissippi President/CEO Patrick Phelan said. “We’ve had some challenging years, and there’s more ahead of us, but I think there is some really promising work going on and more hope for the future.” STRIDES CONTINUED ON A2

$127,000 payment will repay city coffers for dredging work

STERLING – A mighty swing of the sledgehammer into a symbolic door officially ushered in a new way of thinking about the city’s downtown. Mayor Skip Lee left his mark Thursday on the door emblazoned with the new Lawrence Lofts logo. The door prop was used at the community groundbreaking ceremony held Thursday at the Lawrence Building. Floors two through five of the building have been vacant since the 1960s.

STERLING – It took a while, but the Sterling Park District has received full payment on its share of the state Mud to Parks grant. “We received a check for $127,000 and change from the state Wednesday for the dredging work done at Thomas Park,” Parks Director Larry Schuldt said. In September 2013, the city learned it would receive a $1.3 million EPA Green Infrastructure Grant for its ecotourism project on the riverfront, and a $900,000 award from the Mud to Parks grant program. The Mud to Parks money was to be used to move fill to cover the former Northwestern Steel & Wire Co. brownfield site.
