Glik’s opening Friday Promotions planned right off bat at clothing store BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – Midwest clothing retailer Glik’s will open at noon Friday at Northland Mall. Jeff Glik, CEO and president of the Granite City-based company, will be there for the event, along with his father, 89-year-old Joe Glik. The fourth-generation leader of Glik’s will carry on the family tradi-
tion for store openings. “We will cut 118 dollar bills and give it to the Chamber of Commerce,” Glik said. “It signifies the 118 years that Glik’s has been in business.” Some special promotions are planned for the store’s first day in Sterling. Founded in 1897, Glik’s is the nation’s 14th-oldest retailer. The company, which prefers to locate in rural areas, has more than 90 stores
in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota and North Dakota. Glik’s carries men’s and women’s clothing, featuring brands like The North Face, Silver Jeans, Billabong, Hurley, Roxy, Fox, Under Armour, Southern Shirt Company, Flying Monkey Jeans, Alex and Ani, and Miss Me. The mall’s newest tenant will be next door to another clothing store, Maurices.

Casey Nance and Wyatt Zimmerman (both left) and Tasha Romano and Kendal Poff work on crafts Monday afternoon while touring the Head Start classrooms at Wallace School, 506 W. Fourth St., Sterling. There are 10 to 15 slots still available, said Carisa Valdez, the preschool program’s family and community service coordinator. She added that the program would like to have a waiting list, too, in case students’ families move out of the area.

STERLING – Thanks to the Bi-County Special Education Cooperative’s exodus, Head Start has consolidated under one roof. The preschool program, which already had four classrooms in Wallace School, added four more that were housed at Sterling Rock Falls Child Care, 1840 W. LeFevre Road. Classes began Sept. 2, and officials held an open house Monday at the school at 506 W. Fourth St. “We moved our programs all here because we needed the additional space,” Director Jill Calkins said. Bi-County moved in August to 2317 E. Lincolnway, Suite A., in Sterling to provide accessibility to the disabled, said Bob Sondgeroth, superintendent of Regional Office of Education No. 47 – which includes Whiteside, Lee and Ogle counties. ROCK FALLS – Coloma Township is no longer on the Illinois Comptroller’s delinquent reports list. The township missed the Sept. 27 deadlines for submitting its fiscal year 2015 annual financial report, and for filing an extension request. The township’s accounting firm, Winkel, Parker & Foster, completed the report last week, and the comptroller has changed the township’s reporting status. “The accountants’ office called me Wednesday, and told me he had the report done,” township Supervisor David Blanton said. “I guess the state posted it on Friday morning.” Blanton said the township can now turn its full attention to working with the firm’s Dixon office to compile information for an audit or a compilation report.
