Missing the boat with tourism? Organizer says river, resources can net more revenue BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

STERLING – Dave Druen knows that flowing waterways can bring tourism revenue streams. Druen and Matthew Hilligoss are members of the Rock River Trail Initiative Council. In an effort to promote the Rock River and the area’s other recreational gems, they organized the first Outdoor Sports Expo, held Saturday at Moonlight Bay

Just up the river The second annual Venetian Night in Dixon began as the Outdoor Sports Expo wrapped up Saturday. See photos from the event in Dixon on A3. Marina on Mound Hill Road. About 25 vendors set up shop along the river to offer goods, services, information and demonstrations. Whether your passion was biking, boating, camping, kayaking, fishing, hunting or

motorcycles, the expo had it covered. Druen, owner of Dave’s Outdoor World, loves the recreational opportunities here, and he believes the area is missing the boat by not fully understanding the potential economic impact of its natural resources. “People take the river, canal, and trails for granted, but tourism brings in tax dollars, and it brings a direct shot in the arm to businesses,” Druen said. Volunteers from Abiding Word Church in Sterling built the 2,100-square-foot home for the Afghanistan veteran, his wife, Brittany, and their four children, Michael, 8, Braden, 6, Hannah, 4, and Harper, 17 months. RIGHT: Brittany and Harper welcome visitors to their new home, which boasts three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. Shoemaker, who was injured by an ammunition explosion while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2012, paid for the land and the foundation, he said, and even sold his truck to do so. Work began last summer. While holding Harper, Shoemaker shows longtime friend and fellow Eldena native Dan Huene the girls’ bedroom during an open house.
