SERVING DIXON AND THE SURROUNDING AREA SINCE 1851
MISSOURI | NICHOLAS SHELEY CASE
Prosecutors to seek death penalty Convicted murderer’s arraignment is July 6 BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521 @SeaWarren
When it comes to Nicholas Sheley’s fate, Missouri prosecutors have made up their minds: He deserves to die.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Steve Jerrell said so in a document filed Monday in Jefferson County Court. Sheley, 35, of Sterling, is in Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, charged with two counts of firstdegree murder and two counts of armed criminal action in the deaths of Jill and Tom Estes, an Arkansas couple killed in Fes-
tus, Missouri, in June 2008. Prosecutors say the husband and wife, both 54, were the last two of eight victims in Sheley’s weeklong murder spree. He has been convicted in Illinois of murdering Russell Reed, 93; Ronald Randall, 65; Brock Branson, 29; Kilynna Blake, 20; her 2-yearold son, Dayan Blake, and Kenneth Ulve, 25; for which he is serving
six life sentences. Illinois does not have the death penalty. In his notice of his intent to seek the death penalty, Jerrell wrote that the murders of Jill and Tom Estes were “outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhuman in that [they] involved torture or depravity of mind.” PENALTY CONTINUED ON A2

Brett Hall of Kasbeer describes the 1800’s-era woodworking tools he inherited from his great-grandfather, Lars Swanson, while working at the Old Settlers Log Cabin in Dixon. Hall will be turning one room of the cabin into a period woodworking shop, complete with no electricity, no artificial lights and all hand-powered tools. Hall will be at the cabin June 20 for the Rock River Garden Club’s “Bloomin’ on the Rock.” The Garden Faire is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the cabin on Lincoln Statue Drive. It will include talks, music, cabin tours, and vendors. A picnic lunch and treats will be sold. Visit bloominontherock.com or facebook.com/Bloomintherock or call Dixon Tourism at 815-284-3496 for more information. RIGHT: Chisels, a bevel gauge, and a mortise and tenon marking gauge are shown. FAR-RIGHT: Its shape worn from rectangular to nearly oval, an oil stone that belonged to Hall’s great-grandfather shows the wear and tear of time and countless hours of use sharpening tools.

MORRISON – With financing still up in the air, the city is proceeding with revised plans for a new wastewater treatment plant. Advertising for bids on the estimated $21 million project went out Thursday, and they are scheduled for opening on July 29. The city last year delayed the project another year at the recommendation of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. City officials were told new agency financing rules were being put in place that could make the project more affordable. The most important change to the city would be the addition of a 30-year loan option. The EPA, however, told the city a couple of months ago that the extended loan period might not be possible. The city has decided to move ahead with construction plans under the assumption the loan will be for 20 years. PLANT CONTINUED ON A10
