Murder count dropped State’s attorney: Charge filed too late to be prosecuted BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521

DIXON – A Dixon man accused of causing the death of his daughter will no longer be charged with firstdegree murder.

Charles T. George, 36, is now charged only with four counts of aggravated battery of a child and one count of aggravated domestic battery of a child. Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller said Monday that

because of “speedy trial” rules, the state wouldn’t be allowed to prosecute Charles George on a murder charge, because it was added to his indictment more than 120 days after his original demand for a speedy trial. Sacco-Miller said the 120 days

would have expired in January 2011, making the December 2013 addition of the murder charge far too late. One of her assistants, she said, made her aware of the issue. MURDER CONTINUED ON A4

Prison worker under investigation Employee barred from facility; matter referred to prosecutors BY DAVID GIULIANI dgiuliani@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525

DIXON – A contracted worker for the Dixon Correctional Center is under investigation after being walked off the state prison’s property last week, a state official said Monday. The worker violated the

prison’s procedures, said Tom Shaer, spokesman for the Department of Corrections, who would not provide details. The matter has been referred to the Lee County state’s attorney’s office, which handles criminal prosecutions, he said. The worker has been barred from returning to the prison,

pending disposition of the matter, Shaer said. “The employee is not involved in safety or security,” he said. “The alleged violation does not involve safety or security.” State’s Attorney Anna SaccoMiller said she didn’t have enough information about the matter to comment.

Shaer wouldn’t identify the worker’s gender, but Sauk Valley Media has learned the worker is a woman. The prison was on lockdown for a couple of weeks last month because of a periodic, unscheduled inspection. That had nothing to do with the contracted worker, Shaer said. OBITUARIES ........ DIXON – The hopes of gas station owners to have video gambling terminals in Dixon were short-lived. The Dixon City Council unanimously decided against allowing gas stations to apply for licenses to serve alcohol, which would allow them to have the gambling machines, after two owners had made such requests to the city. In 2012, video gambling terminals became legal in Illinois for specific businesses. Among those businesses allowed to have the terminals are truck stops, bars and restaurants, Mayor Jim Burke said, in addition to businesses with a liquor license and a pour Commissioner license, which David Blackburn allows them to serve alcohol. Burke said allowing gas stations to serve alcohol would be “very poor public policy.” Commissioner David Blackburn said that if gas station owners wanted to be able to have the gambling terminals, they should approach the state about amending the gaming statue to allow for that. “I don’t know that we need to change local ordinances to turn gas stations into places that distribute alcohol,” he said. Ed Miller, president of Evergreen Marketing, which owns the Shamrock Pub, said bars are already heavily taxed and regulated, adding that allowing more businesses to have video gaming terminals would take a growing revenue stream away from the city’s bars.
