Candidates want to put the past behind, move forward BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

DIXON – The city’s historic transition to a new form of government, economic development, and infrastructure were prevalent themes at the candidate forum held Thursday at a packed Dixon High School cafeteria. Sponsored by the Dixon Area Chamber of Commerce, Sauk Val-

ley Media, and WIXN radio, Dixon’s two mayoral candidates and 11 city commissioner hopefuls conveyed a desire to move on from mistakes of the past and carry out the wishes of voters. City Commissioner Jeff Kuhn, who admits he didn’t immediately support the switch from the commission form of government to a managerial form, reaffirmed his change of heart. “We can’t dwell on the past,” Kuhn

said. “I embrace the people’s decision. If I didn’t believe in the transition, I wouldn’t have run for mayor.” Both mayoral candidates, during a half-hour question-and-answer session, were asked if they were ready to deal with egos and possible conflict during the switch. Both said they believe a successful transition process hinges on the future city manager.

DIXON – School Board candidate Jim Schielein said the district has come to a crossroad in recent years. The board will have to deal with some tough challenges in the coming months, including a long-range facilities plan, and financial issues caused by cuts to state aid. “The school district is facing multiple challenges, all of which have to do with finances,” said Schielein, a current school board member. “I bring experience, I have served 4 years on the board, and I know this district. I’ll continue to meet the challenges head-on for the students and the community.” Schielein was one of the six Dixon School Board candidates who participated in a forum Thursday night, put on by the Dixon Area Chamber of Commerce, Sauk Valley Media and WIXN AM 1460. They’ll vie for three seats on the board on in the April 7 election. About 200 people packed the Dixon High School cafeteria to hear each candidate give a 2-minute opening statement.
