Curing an eyesore Kreider Services teams up with city and bank to tear down derelict home and build new Michael Krabbenhoeft/mkrabbenhoeft@saukvalley.com

Payton Rumfelt, 8, and Sarah Hutchison, 7, work on a math worksheet Tuesday in Chelsea Stuart’s second grade-class at Northside Elementary School in Morrison. Stuart has removed some of the tables, chairs and desks from her room and replaced them with wobble cushions, bean bags, pillows and exercise balls.

DIXON – A derelict property on Third Street won’t be standing for much longer. After collaborating with the city and Sterling Federal Bank, Kreider Services is moving forward with plans to have the century-old house at 316-318 W. Third St. torn down, and a replacement home tailored to residents with developmental disabilities built in its place.

MORRISON – Northside Elementary School secondgrader Maya Decker bounced gleefully on an exercise ball. P.E.? Negative. This is how Chelsea Stuart’s students roll. And sit, bounce, recline and lie down. Maya, 8, was happily rapt as her teacher went over a math worksheet Tuesday afternoon. A few feet away, Aiden wobbled side to side on his wobble-cushion chair, but his eyes didn’t leave his teacher.

“This house has been an eyesore for a long time,” Mayor Li Arellano Jr. said Thursday. “It has been sitting there for a while, and as time does its dirty work, it becomes degraded.” The house, located across the street from Haymarket Square, had been boarded up and in foreclosure for the past 5 years. At one time, the property was valued at $200,000, said Dean Ahlers, president and CEO of Sterling Federal Bank. “The house has some good bones to it, but it’s been hard to sell,” he said.

People invited to weigh in on trails BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

ROCK FALLS – Not only will the people get a chance to speak Monday, they’ll get to draw and paste their favorite trail features on maps. A charrette – more commonly known as a brainstorming session – will be held at 6 p.m. at the Rock Falls Community Building. The city’s Hennepin Canal and Trails Committee has received guidance in planning the event from George Bellovics, a landscape architect for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Bellovics has led many recreational planning sessions, some as Grand Illinois Trails coordinator.

Workers start the demolition of a derelict house on Third Street in Dixon on Thursday. A new home for Kreider Services clients will be built on the property.
