DIXON – For nearly 3 hours and 37 rounds, Rebekah Zeigler did all she could to keep the blood from rushing to her head. But when Tom Wadsworth, emcee of the first combined Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Regional Spelling Bee, turned and announced to the Centennial Elementary School fifth-grader, “You’re going to Washington!”, she Online extra put her hands on her cheeks Read this story at and dragged her fingers down saukvalley.com to to reveal bright red streaks – watch video from the streaks of relief, no doubt. first Lee-Ogle-WhiteIn spelling scullion corside Spelling Bee. rectly, the defending LeeOgle champ from Polo again punched her ticket to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held May 22 to 27 in National Harbor, Maryland. She also survived a showdown with three other spellers – eventual runner-up Mariam Elahmady of River Bend Middle School in Fulton, Aaliyah Gaffey of Challand Middle School in Sterling, and Rebekah Starwalt of Byron Middle School – that began in Round 14 and lasted the subsequent 13 rounds.

ROCK FALLS – In 1956, Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” was at the top of the Billboard chart, “The Wizard of Oz” made its TV debut, and the Rock Falls Chamber of Commerce had its first meeting. The chamber celebrated its 60th anniversary during its annual meeting and dinner Thursday at the Rock Falls Days Inn. The three founding chamber members still in business were recognized – IFH Group, Rock Falls American Legion, and the Rock Falls Fire Department. “We have seen many changes over the years, but the chamber’s goals of growth, connections, and helping the community remain the same,” Chamber President and CEO Bethany Bland. “Our biggest asset is our volunteers, and we continue to fill more than 1,000 volunteer opportunities a year.” Julie Jacobs, the retiring chamber board chairwoman, was recognized for serving for two terms, and departing board member Robbin Blackert was honored for her 6 years of service. Jacobs will pass the torch to Jim Wickert. The ambassador of the year was Debbie Wilhelmi, who is also on the board of directors.
