Hale: Kinzinger eyeing Senate Rockford Tea Party founder visits Dixon BY DEREK BARICHELLO dbarichello@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 526

DIXON – David Hale said he was tired of throwing peanuts from the gallery. The Rockford conservative and founder of the Rockford Tea Party is planning to challenge Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, in the 16th Congressional District primary. Hale told about 30 people at the Sauk Valley Tea Party’s monthly meeting Tuesday at Dixon’s Loveland Community House and Museum that he’s disappointed in the

job Kinzinger has done. Hale also hinted that the congressman may be eyeing a higher office – the Senate seat held by Mark Kirk. Hale, who works in health care technology, is in favor of reducing the size of government, free enterprise and eliminating unnecessary regulations on businesses, he said Tuesday. “The values and beliefs of the Tea Party,” he said. Hale said Tuesday that Kinzinger also ran under the Tea Party banner, then abandoned those values in Washington, and even started to turn on them. Kinzinger was among a Republican minority who voted for legislation to end the 2 1/2-week shutdown, allowing the government

to borrow money through at least February. The bill passed the House largely with the votes of Democrats. Kinzinger said in a news release that House Republicans fought to the brink to protect Americans from Obamacare, the initial reason behind Republicans’ decision to allow a shutdown. But Kinzinger defended his vote by saying that “surpassing our debt threshold would be incredibly damaging to our already weak economy ... .” Also, Kinzinger publicly said he opposed Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s efforts to defund Obamacare through the government shutdown. Snow flurries and temperatures in the 30s did not prevent local fishermen from trying their hand at catching fish Tuesday afternoon on the Rock River in Oregon. Snow fell throughout most of the morning and early afternoon without accumulating. It will be a bit warmer today, but still with chances of rain and snow. The forecasted high is in the mid-40s.

City has had same auditor for a decade Committee receives draft of audit Tuesday BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 529

ROCK FALLS – When the Rock Falls Finance Committee received a presentation of a draft of its audit report Tuesday night, it came from the same firm it has used for the last 10 years. CliftonLarsonAllen has been Rock Falls’ auditor since 2003, said City Administrator Robbin Blackert, when it took over for Lindgren Callihan Van

Osdol & Co., the firm that did the 2002 audit. “Auditors are only as good as the information you give them,” Blackert said prior to the meeting. “Two years ago we did a [request for proposals] for auditing firms, to see what the price is to see if it’s even worth switching.” The city decided to retain CliftonLarsonAllen, and Blackert said she was “happy” with the work the firm has done for the city. The Rock Falls City Council will decide, likely in January, whether to put out another request for proposals, which

Blackert said they aren’t required by law to do. The city also doesn’t have to accept the lowest bid, she added. Robbin “I think the Blackert most important part of your audit is your listening to and studying what’s given to you in the management letter,” she said. “And actually implementing those changes for oversight.” CliftonLarsonAllen’s Todd

Etheridge presented the Finance Committee with a draft of the audit, which was recommended for presentation to the City Council Nov. 5. In the management letter presented to the Finance Committee, Etheridge said there was an inadequate segregation of duties, which means CliftonLarsonAllen recommends the city have more checks and balances regarding such duties as receiving checks, depositing cash and reconciling bank statements.

Asked in August about her fundraising, Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, said little. “My family has given me money,” she told a reporter during a factory tour in Sterling. “My former boss has given me money.” It turns out she was just scratching the surface. Rep. Cheri Her financial Bustos report for July through September revealed that hundreds more people donated to her 2014 campaign, with many contributions as small as $5, $10 and $15. Bobby Bustos, whose Schilling 17th District includes Whiteside County, will likely face her Republican predecessor, Bobby Schilling of Colona, in the November 2014 election. She beat him last year. As of Sept. 30, Bustos had raised $767,068, with $612,563 on hand. Schilling, who announced his campaign in early July, pulled in considerably less – $174,959, with nearly that much on hand as of Sept. 30.
