Citizens recognized at Polo chamber dinner By Zach Arbogast zarbogast@oglecounty news.com Nearly everyone at the 51st annual Polo Chamber of Commerce dinner Monday evening appeared to anticipate who Polo’s 2017 Citizen of the Year would be except for the recipient herself. “I’m so stunned; I thought they only gave this to business people,” Joan Raley said after the presentation. “I can’t say enough, I couldn’t have done so much without all the friends I’ve made and help I’ve received.” Tom Suits presented the award at the dinner, which was held at CedarStone. He cited Raley’s decades of service in education as a fifth grade teacher, Polo Public Library Board member, and a member of the Polo Historical Society. “I hope many of you remember the fall event called ‘Peddler’s Pass,’” said Suits, reminiscing. “Joan,

while riding in a wagon with visitors and hometown people who wanted to hear Joan’s history lessons, gave tours of Polo and described places of historical significance.” Suits also paid tribute to the history lessons and tours on behalf of the historical society she gave to Polo schools students, and her time with Chapter DW of the Philanthropic Educational Organization, of which she served on the board. “Joan, you have done so much to preserve the history of Polo, and for that, we are all indebted to you.” With that, Chamber President DJ Sanders presented her plaque at her seat, and Raley was floored. With barely enough time to bask in her disbelief, Raley was swarmed by friends, eager to congratulate her. Earlier in the evening, Bob Heath was named Volunteer of the Year. Raley was honored for her contributions to education and public Turn to A3 service, as well as her passion, hard work, and diligence for honoring Polo’s history. Photo by Zach Arbogast

Hot day for TOSOC ride By Earleen Hinton ehinton@oglecounty news.com Temperatures in the 90s coupled with high humidity didn’t stop more than 300 bicyclists from taking part in the Second Annual TŌSOC (Tour of Scenic Ogle County) on Saturday. “The event went very well,” said Brion Brooks, executive director of the Village of Progress, the organization that hosts the event. “I think we had around 325 riders, which was a little higher than last year’s. The reviews we got were very supportive.” Proceeds from TŌSOC benefit the Village of Progress, a private not-forprofit corporation that was

founded in Oregon in 1969 to meet the training needs of adults with disabilities who reside in Ogle County. Bicyclists could choose from three riding routes, a 10-mile, 32-mile, and 62mile. Riders started and finished their rides from the Village of Progress in Oregon. Most riders left early in the morning to beat the day’s predicted heat. “I think the record high temps may have kept some people away,” said Brooks. “The people who participated really enjoyed the event. We had some guys ride that came to the ride who were from other countries. It was kind of neat to have that international flair.” Turn to A2

A longtime Ogle County Board member announced last week that she will not seek re-election next year. “I’m not going to run again,” Pat Saunders, a Republican from Polo, said Sept. 19. “I wanted to announce it early enough that anyone who wants to run for the seat has time to file for it.” Saunders, who will have served on the board for 16 years when her term is up in November of 2018, represents District 8, which covers Brookville, Buffalo, Eagle Point, Grand Detour, Lincoln, Pine Creek, Taylor, and Woosung Townships. She said she wanted to allow plenty of time for anyone interested in running for the seat in the March 20 primary election to circulate and file a nominating petition. If no one runs for the post,

the county board will appoint someone to fill it. “I don’t want that to happen,” she said. “The voters should decide who represents them.” “I would also like to see us implement terms limits,” Saunders said. “I don’t think anyone should serve more than 20 years, but 12 or 16 years would be better. You need fresh ideas and insights.” Nomination packets and information for the March primary are available at the county clerk’s office on the first floor of the Ogle County Courthouse in Oregon. The period for circulating petitions to obtain the signatures of registered voters began Sept. 5. The completed petitions must be filed at the county clerk’s office from Nov. 27 to Dec. 4. Successful candidates in the March primary will run for election in the Nov. 6, 2018 general election.
