Sex trafficking in the Sauk Valley? Illinois is rated fifth in the nation for incidents of human trafficking

Farm Bureau ready for new legislative year

You might think sex trafficking happens only big-city back alleys, or Third World countries. You would be wrong. It’s happening in rural America, and not only to adults. Kids as young as middle-schoolers can be victims. In fact, the average age of a person forced into sex trafficking is 13 to 14. And it’s not just the missing or runaways who are suspected victims. It could be happening to a child living with you now, experts say. Maybe she meets an older guy. He pays attention to her, flatters her, invites her to a party. The guy – or a teen working with him – slips something into her drink, takes compromising photos, maybe even photos of her being sexually assaulted. Then he threatens her: Do what I say, or I’ll post these photos. I’ll send them to your parents, I’ll send them to your friends. Terrified and ashamed, she becomes his next earner. Illinois is rated fifth in the nation for incidents of human trafficking, of which sex trafficking by far is the largest component, along with labor trafficking.

Illinois is rated fifth in the nation for incidents of human trafficking, of which sex trafficking by far is the largest component, along with labor trafficking. Chicago and Rockford are the two largest sex trafficking hubs. Interstates 39, 80, 88 and 90, which crisscross Ogle, Lee, Bureau and Whiteside counties and run on into Iowa and Wisconsin, are major thoroughfares over which the practice is spread.

Attorney: Girl’s death an act of God Defense files notice in 2014 ATV vs. deer fatality BY ASHLEY CADY acady@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5521 @ashleycady_svm

DIXON – An act of God – and not the influence of drugs – caused the death of a 7-yearold girl thrown from an ATV when the driver struck a deer. That’s the argument defense attorney Paul Whitcombe will make in the trial of Brian Dees, 37, of Amboy, who was driving

the off-road vehicle on Sublette Road in Amboy on Aug. 3, 2014, when the collision sent the ATV into a ditch and threw off Cassandra Gray, 28, and her daughter, Makenzie Rutherford, 7. The girl was airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where she died 2 days later. Whitcombe filed a notice in Lee County Court on Dec. 15, advising he will be asserting the affir-

Amid a backdrop of political change in Washington, the Illinois Farm Bureau has set its lobbying agenda for 2017. The organization’s board of directors approved its national legislative priorities list Dec. 21, but it will serve as more of a starting point until the ag industry gets a better feel for a new administration and Congress. President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office Jan. 20, and Congress convenes Tuesday. Adam Nielsen, IFB’s director of national legislation and policy development, said the list is short because of the unknowns created by the transition of power at the White House. The list is largely based on what is known, he said, and the top issues in the early going appear to be regulatory and tax reforms – both of which received Trump’s strong support on the campaign trail. “We’ve been told by congressional staff that right after everyone is sworn in, they will begin work on a regulatory reform bill,” Nielsen said. “The House expects a vote in the next couple of weeks.” Trump has named billionaire investor Carl Icahn as a special adviser on regulatory issues,

Among the targeted reforms is the Environmental Protection Agency’s controversial Waters of the United States, or WOTUS, rule, which farmers will watch closely. Farmers are looking for wholesale changes that will bring relief from burdensome regulations, Nielsen said. “This isn’t just about an issue or two – structural changes are needed. We’re looking for transparency with the economics and the science used by regulatory agencies.” FARM continued on A54
