STERLING – Local law enforcement officials are spearheading a push for Twin Cities PADS Homeless Shelter to stay open year-round. Concern is growing among some close to the homelessness problem in Sterling, Rock Falls, and Dixon that there is a growing need that can’t be met without more help
Brian Tribley of Firehouse of God Ministries in Sterling. She learned that Firehouse of God and the Dixon PADS Homeless Shelter were full on a regular basis. “The homeless population has risen over the last 3 years based on what we see in law enforcement,” Nelson said. “The health department, hospital, and schools are seeing it too.” SHELTER continued on A94

DIXON – The Lee County state’s attorney has received a $443,508 grant to form a response team and support center dedicated to easing the trauma for sexual assault victims. Prompted by a rise in sexual assault cases during the past couple of years, State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller applied for the U.S. Department of Justice grant in January in the hopes of creating a less burdensome process for victims. “Sexual assault is one of the most shameful and demeaning offenses that can occur,” she said. “To report it, what they have to go through is so traumatic, it’s no wonder that it’s so underreported.” In 2015, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department responded to 21 reports of sexual assault, a sizable jump from the four reports in 2014. The grant will fund a threepronged project, and the first phase will be to develop a Sexual Assault Response Team of prosecutors, investigators and police officers with specialized training to handle instances of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and campus violence. There will also be an oversight committee with representatives from the state’s attorney’s office, sheriff’s department, Dixon Police Department, YWCA of the Sauk Valley, Lee County Board, and doctors and nurses specially certified to treat victims.
