OREGON – It would have been perfectly understandable if Ericka Biekert and Kyla Suter felt about 40 years old as Superhero Academy wrapped up May 6 behind Oregon Elementary School. All the disappointments, stop signs and restarts they endured? That stuff

can take years off one’s life. Instead, they felt closer to 10. “Half the time, I feel like I’m a thirdgrader, too,” Ericka said. “I wish we got to do the whole week, but I’m also kind of glad it’s the last day.” The 15-year-olds just completed their sophomore year at Oregon, and got a bona fide lesson in adult politics as Open Program students. DIXON – To alleviate liability concerns and an abundance of overtime costs, the Lee County Jail plans to hire two additional officers in the next month. The jail operates with 8 correctional officers and must have at least two working at any given time to abide Sheriff John Simonton by state law. However, juggling the jailers’ schedules around instances like sick days, extended medical leave and vacations has put a strain on the officers and the department’s overtime budget, Lee County Sheriff John Simonton said. “We are working with the bare, absolute minimum of correctional officers,” Simonton said. “They’re worn out, and we need to get them some relief.” Simonton made a request to the Lee County Board to hire the additional staff, citing the situation as a “most critical need” for the jail. With flat county revenue paired with economic distress at the state level, Simonton said he is sympathetic to the county’s fiscal limitations, but the expense would ease overtime burdens and prevent potentially costly liability issues from having overworked staff. “The 8 employees in the jail division are taking up almost 50 percent of the overtime budget for the entire department,” he said. ROCK FALLS – Diane Hatfield spends about 2 hours a day in her work commute, but she has drastically reduced her travel time. Hatfield, 52, knew she’d be driving from her home in Bettendorf, Iowa, to Rock Falls City Hall when she landed the newly created job of utilities supervisor, but inconvenience

The past 15 years she was a field office manager for U.S. Pipeline, an energy infrastructure construction company based in Houston. “I enjoyed it immensely, but I was on the road all the time,” Hatfield said. “We’d get a 15-month contract, and wherever it was, I’d be there that long.”
