Many people start off the new year wanting to be healthier, to get in shape, or to lose weight.

Such resolutions often go by the wayside, for any number of reasons. “It’s too hard,” “I’m not seeing enough progress,” or “There isn’t enough time,” are the excuses personal trainer John Cooper of Morris hears most frequently.

Although many clients ask him about diets, he said he would rather they seek specifics from a dietitian or nutritionist.

He believes people should eat what they normally eat, just cut the portion in half.

“It’s 90 percent diet,” he said. “You’ll get less results working out 7 days a week if you eat a crappy diet than you will if you eat a good diet and work out one or two times a week.”

Morrison Community Hospital opens diabetic center

MORRISON – Morrison Community Hospital has opened a diabetic center to help combat the serious, chronic disease.

The diabetic center, which opened in September, is lead by Dr. Priyanka Gauravi, an endocrinologist. An endocrinologist is a physician who specializes in treating disorders of the endocrine system, such as diabetes.

“The whole idea of the center is to give comprehensive care to the diabetics in this area,” Gauravi said. “There are quite a few diabetics in the area, and we can definitely have a positive impact.”

Most of the food eaten is turned into glucose for the body to use for energy. The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the body’s cells.

When you have diabetes, the body either does not make enough insulin or cannot use its own insulin as well as it should, which causes sugar to build up in the blood.

More than 827,000 adults in Illinois have been diagnosed with diabetes and each year

more than 2,700 residents die from the disease, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Many more suffer from complications such as heart disease, vision loss and amputations.

The burden of diabetes is even higher among minority populations.

“Anyone who is obese or has a family history is at risk for diabetes,” Gauravi said. “That can be anywhere from 30 percent to up to 80 percent of the population.”

Gauravi, who is originally from India, works closely with Mona Summers, a certified wound care nurse providing treatment of skin infections and wounds.

“Right now, I work closely with the diabetes educators at CGH [Medical Center in Sterling],” Gauravi said. “I get in touch with them at least once a week when we have questions about patients or medications.”

accept referrals from CGH. Gauravi’s services are not found anywhere else within a 50-mile radius of the hospital, Pfister said.

“Patients are sometimes traveling at least 50 miles seeking care for their diabetic and thyroid disease management,” she said.

“We are very proud to be able to provide this rewarding service to the area.”

Gauravi said it’s always an uphill talk to spread awareness about diabetes and make an impact.

“People know about diabetes, but how many of them are ready to work with themselves and the facilities available to make a change,” she said.

“It’s difficult to make lifestyle changes. We are here to help.”

It’s a familiar theme among his male patients, McCafferty said. “I think certainly

there’s an element of vanity, but a certain amount of vanity is good. We need to kind of take care of ourselves.”

Another patient of McCafferty’s, Bruce, a 55-year-old executive from Chicago who underwent a facelift in December, freely admits the procedure was “all about me.”

“We men are aging, but we are staying in shape and exercising and working out. So from the neck down, we could be in our 30s or 40s. So you just want the face to match,” said Bruce, who asked that his last name not be published.

“Even at 55, I feel like I’m in my 20s until I pass by a mirror.”

Cosmetic surgery for men is not for the faint of heart or – because insurance probably won’t cover the procedure – the thin of wallet.

Physician fees for the most common procedures range from about $2,700 to more than $5,000, and the cost can easily double when facility fees, anesthesia and other surgical costs are added in.

Because it is an elective surgery, safety is paramount, McCafferty said.

“You have to remember there is a medical side to it. That’s why Botox parties are to be frowned upon, because things can happen.”

Women still comprise

about 90 percent of the cosmetic surgery patients, but the number of men undergoing the knife is increasing at a faster rate as times have changed, said Michael C. Edwards, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Today, he said, “There’s a need to work longer. It’s not as though people can retire at 55 and fish and travel the world. They need to watch their pennies and they need to stay competitive in the workforce.”

Based in Las Vegas, Edwards’ plastic surgery practice sees a wide range of patients, from cocktail servers to show headliners whose livelihoods depend at least partially on physical

appearance. “But I think the more profound effect is what comes internally. They feel better. They’re more selfconfident. They start taking better care of themselves.”

Wehrheim certainly agrees with that, noting that a more youthful appearance won’t necessarily be an advantage to a financial adviser. “In my business, it helps to look experienced,” he said.

“If you feel good about all parts of your life – about your marriage, your health, your appearance, your business – it’s all part of the puzzle. If you have one part that you’re not satisfied with, it weighs on you. I’m not saying I was unhappy with it, but I just thought, ‘Why

not be my best at everything?’”

His wife supported the decision, he said, but did first ask, “You’re not doing this for me, are you?” He assured her he wasn’t.

And while he’s taking some requisite ribbing from his golfing buddies, he added, “I know deep down inside they want to do it, too, but they’re not willing to pull the trigger.”

Cataract patients see options

DANVILLE – For the first time since she was 9 years old, Jane Andrews doesn’t need to wear glasses or contacts.

The 62-year-old Danville woman credits the breakthrough to the new Refractive Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery now being done

by Drs. Andy Dvorak and David Dillman with Dillman Eye Care Associates.

Traditional cataract surgery has always involved the use of a physical blade to create several small incisions, by hand, during the procedure. With ReLACS, these incisions are now made with a laser.

This option allow surgeons to plan and perform cataract surgeries to exacting, individualized specifications unattainable with standard cataract surgery.

“The human hand just cannot match the precision, accuracy, or reproducibility of a laser,” said Dillman, an ophthalmologist. “Many people are familiar with LASIK surgery, and this applies similar technology to removing cataracts.”

He added, “Because these techniques are so precise and so accurate, many patients find that after surgery they can reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts entirely.”

The procedure has been done at Hoopeston Regional Health Center since March 2013, Dillman said, but recently it has become available at the Ambulatory Care Center for Excellence in Surgical Services.

He estimated that he and Dvorak have per-

formed more than 600 ReLACS procedures over the past year and a half.

Andrews is a big proponent of the surgery, saying, “I love the results.”

She had cataracts in both eyes, and they were removed with the new laser option in August 2013 in Hoopeston. The actual surgery, including positioning the laser, took only 20-30 minutes, she said, and she was lightly sedated.

The procedure was done on one eye, and then the second eye was done 2 weeks later. The cataracts were replaced with multifocal lenses, meaning she can see both close-up and distance without glasses.

“I can wake up in the morning and I can see clearly, and I don’t have to take my glasses off at night,” she said. “I am very happy.”

Another drug is approved to help the obese Medication prompts the pancreas to make extra insulin after meals

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug that may help some of the millions of Americans resolving to lose weight this year.

The daily injectable drug, liraglutide, is part of a new class of diabetes medicines that prompt the pancreas to make extra insulin after meals.

Novo Nordisk first got approval to sell liraglutide 5 years ago as a diabetes therapy, brand name Victoza. The new, higherdose prescription product, Saxenda, is specifically for weight loss in obese patients, and in overweight adults who have at CONTINUED FROM 4

Liraglutide offers a novel way to complement the venerable but vexing prescription of diet and exercise. In addition to boosting insulin, it works in the digestive system and the brain to increase the feeling of fullness and suppress appetite.

“Approximately 80 million people are suffering with obesity,” said Cherie L. Vaz, an endocrinologist at Temple University School of Medicine. “In general, diet drugs have modest effectiveness, but you want to be able to offer patients everything you can.”

Still, there is no escaping the larger context of liraglutide’s debut: Diet drugs have demonstrated, again and again since the 1950s, how little medical science really understands the biology of obesity. Every breakthrough has led to new puzzles and unforeseen dangers.

Obesity is a major public health issue, so in theory, a safe, effective treatment would be an automatic blockbuster.

Yet three diet drugs have been approved since 2012 – Belviq, Qsymia, and Contrave – and none has been a big seller, according to market analysts.

Partly, this is because “effective” does not mean the patient gets skinny.

The FDA considers a drug effective if, with diet and exercise, it enables a 5 percent weight loss –

Another damper on diet drugs’ popularity is the checkered safety history. Two generations ago, the addictive dangers of amphetamines gave obesity drugs a bad reputation. Related drugs that acted on neurotransmitters (nerve-signaling chemicals) involved in mood and satiety were believed to be safer. Then two popular ones – fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine – were removed from the market in 1997 after evidence that a third of users could develop heart-valve damage.

That same year, sibutramine, which also acted on a neurotransmitter, was approved. It was withdrawn in 2010 because of links to heart attacks and strokes.

medications – Belviq, Qsymia, and Contrave – work in part by tinkering with neurotransmitters.

Liraglutide works primarily by imitating a molecule, called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), that the body produces to stimulate the release of insulin.

While the real thing stops working after only a few minutes in the body, liraglutide works for 13 hours, explained Matthew R. Hayes, a Pennsylvania University nutritional neuroscientist. During that period, the drug slows the passage of food from the stomach to the small intestine, bolstering the “I’m full” signal in the brain.

“Like the other drugs, it does get into the brain, which was taboo for a while,” Hayes said. “But it helps control satiation.”

The medication has to be taken indefinitely and most insurers will not pay for drugs prescribed specifically for weight loss.

A spokesman for Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company with U.S. headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey, said it was in talks with insurers and had not yet set a price for Saxenda.

“The biggest downside for my patients is the cost” of diet drugs, said Ramsey Dallal, chief of bariatric surgery at Einstein Healthcare Network, based in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.

“They’re often enthusiastic until they get to ‘It’s not

help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supplements, speak with your doctor to make sure they won’t interact negatively with other medications.

TOTAL FITNESS PASS The Sterling Park District Total Fitness Pass provides members to unlimited access to the fitness centers at Duis Recreation Center and Westwood Fitness & Sports Center during all facility open hours. Passholders also receive limited access to basketball courts, the indoor track and the indoor AstroTurf field at Westwood Fitness & Sports Center, as well as limited access to the swimming pool at Duis Recreation Center.

Members age 9-14 may use Duis Fitness and Westwood Fitness with parental supervision if they have completed the Youth Fitness Class. Please note, a family consists of parents, children 18 years and younger and/or full time college students (under the age of 23) who have the same permanent residence. Persons who do not otherwise meet the foregoing criteria but are residing with one or more members of their immediate family or with a guardian, and who are considered disabled under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may be included in the family pass of such family members/guardian. *Requires a one year commitment.

NOW PLAYING AT WESTWOOD FITNESS & SPORTS CENTER!

Wellbeats is a collection of on demand virtual aerobics classes and is a supplement to our current schedule of live aerobics classes. We offer scheduled Wellbeats classes and open studio time in addition to our existing aerobics class schedule. Open studio time is on a first come first serve basis. Fitness users simply access the kiosk and select the class of their choice.

The Sterling Park District is excited to announce the addition of a 60 yard indoor AstroTurf PureGrass football/soccer field at Westwood Fitness & Sports Center! In addition to scheduled leagues, we offer Open Soccer hours each week.

The field is also available for private rental!
