n the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of ... planting. But those who have a certified green thumb would say that the fall season actually provides opportunities to jump-start plant growth. Roger Meiers has owned K and R Greenhouse in Morrison for 20 years. He says this is a great time to get your tulips, daffodils and hyacinths into the ground. “I tell people that anytime between Sept. 15, and when the ground freezes is good for fall bulbs,” Meiers said. As long as the soil has some warmth, bulbs planted in the fall can begin to settle in and send out roots. That early progress will allow them to be better prepared for growth in the spring. Fall is the right time for kitchen and bath remodels BY KAYLA HEIMERMAN Special to Home & Garden
STERLING – Summer is winding down. The weekends are opening up. The weather is cooling down. Fall is an ideal time to tackle a big home remodeling project,
such as updating a kitchen or bathroom. Steve Workman, owner of Creative Kitchens & Bath in Sterling, says an updated kitchen or bathroom adds value to a home. When it comes to brand new kitchens, the rooms generally are
getting bigger and more open to other rooms of the house. But when it comes to existing kitchens, the rooms simply must be workable, Workman says. Kitchen projects usually involve three main components: cabinets, countertops, and the small-
er details, such as hardware, fixtures and lights. For cabinets, there is no big trend, Workman says. Homeowners are selecting woods, finishes or colors to match their style. “We just got done doing a
kitchen with rustic hickory … where you could see all the knots in the wood,” he said. “We just got done doing another one in black, almost black, real dark cherry.” PROJECTS CONTINUED ON C3
