Part of an over-arching problem City official: Stuck trucks in viaducts are a symptom of larger issue the standards for notification. Of course, there’s more we can probably do. “But in my experience, it doesn’t really matter how much signage there is – they’re going to hit it.” The good news for Dixon is Seventh Street’s reopening is on the horizon. Weather permitting, Ridder said, the street will be open within a week – narrowly missing its Thanksgiving target date. Last week’s snow storm delayed the finishing touches. But once the street is open again, it will be able to convey the commercial truck traffic that has been rerouted under viaducts. Ridder was hired in mid-October, starting midway through the Seventh Street repair. It has been damaged since a June flash flood tore through the outdated culvert underneath the
never going to completely go away. “I don’t know if the truck drivers have decided not to pay attention to the road signs or what,” Ridder said. “We’re interested in making sure everything is safe. … Luckily, it doesn’t seem to be a daily frequency.” Ridder, who previously worked in the Quad Cities, likened the situation to Davenport, Iowa’s “truck-eating bridge” on Brady Street. Ridder said drivers there routinely ignore the signs and flashing lights informing them – and warning them – of the bridge’s clearance. At the end of the day, Ridder said it’s on the drivers to be aware. And when they get stuck, it almost always comes down to failure to read. “I think [Dixon’s signage] is reasonable,” Ridder said. “We’ve followed

DIXON – It’s becoming a more frequent problem, city officials say. For years, semitractor-trailers have been getting stuck under viaducts in the southwest end of Dixon, all of which have posted height limits warning drivers. Over the past 2 months, the Third Street viaduct’s 12-foot height clearance has caught two semis in its grip. New Public Works Director Tim Ridder said “Pretty much all of the viaducts have been hit one way or another.” The problem was exacerbated this year, in part, because of the West Seventh Street construction that started in August. The hope is that once the street opens back up, the issue will lessen. But according to Tim Ridder, the problem’s

Having studied the situation over the last month, Ridder said the southwest region of Dixon endures flash flood runoff from I-88 to the river – too much pressure for outdated infrastructure to take on. Plans to address the whole region are in the

A truck that tried to make the tight squeeze under this viaduct on Third Street in September didn’t make it. Hopefully, fewer trucks will get stuck once Seventh Street reopens, and fewer heavy haulers are detoured down other streets.

street near the Monroe Avenue intersection. The culvert’s failure caused a car-sized collapse in the street, and for nearly 6 months, it has been closed to through traffic. Ridder said the street will be ready to take on traffic next week, and requires only minor touch-ups – an asphalt finish and painting street lines – which the city will address in the spring. For him, though, the situation highlights a larger problem: Infrastructure in the southwest needs to be tackled. “It looks like the watershed has some issues that need to be addressed long-term,” he said. “Short-term, we had an infrastructure that failed. We need to put together a comprehensive watershed plan. There’s just more water that’s flowing there than has ever been there before.”
