Taking an emotional stand against bullying Students won’t soon forget father’s powerful message – and that’s just what he hopes for BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN

OREGON – Students sobbed, and the door to the gym at Oregon High School revolved, as teachers left and returned with more boxes of tissues, and even toilet paper when the tissues ran out. Before the fifth-graders through freshmen absorbed the intense antibullying message from Kirk Smalley of the activist group Stand for the Silent, their administrators warned their parents. Letters were sent with a form that could be filled out to excuse their child. Not one parent asked that their child be excused. “I was so proud of all our parents, said Ann Tilton, principal of Oregon Elementary School. “I knew it was going to have to be powerful, “He’s a dad who lost his child. Smalley tearfully shared the story of how, after 2 years of being bullied, his 11-year-old son, Ty, shot himself. The phone call from his hysterical wife. The promise he made 1 month and 7 days later to never bully again. He shared statistics, such as students being

bullied every 7 seconds nationwide, and that 1 of 4 high school graduates have made plans to commit suicide. He held up his cellphone and explained how easy it is for students to terrorize each other. About midway through the 90-minute assembly, he asked how many in the crowd had been bullied. All but a few hands went up. “I love you guys, he said, signing that phrase with his thumb, index finger and pinkie. “You are somebody. Then he asked how many kids in the audience were bullies. Three hands went up in the corner of the gym. Smalley strode toward them and signed again. “I love you guys, he said. “That’s how we learn, is through powerful presentations, Tilton said. Some of the administrators and faculty were taken aback. “I think I even underestimated the emotions we’d experience today, said Kip Crandall, principal of David L. Rahn Junior High School. Counselors and social workers were alerted, too, of the fallout that was to be expected.

Hundreds of fifth-graders through freshmen in the Oregon School District sign “I love you to speaker Kirk Smalley of Stand for the Silent on Thursday during his anti-bullying presentation in the Oregon High School gym. “We wanted them to know that if there was anyone who seemed like they needed to talk, they should be available, Tilton said. When students returned to the junior high, they went straight to homeroom for 35 minutes of debriefing. “That’s that family-type atmosphere, where they can talk about what they felt today, Crandall said. “The most important thing is that this can’t be a 1-day-wonder assembly. We’ve got socio-emotional goals in our school improvement plan. We’re

going to bring this to the forefront periodically. Crandall said students were encouraged to seek out the counselor if they needed assistance beyond the debriefing. The assembly was followed by Merge Day, the Open Program community project of 15-yearold sophomore Gylian Finch. It grouped eighthgraders and freshmen

together for leadership activities – “icebreakers she called them – through the afternoon, and also gave the incoming freshmen a taste of the A-B-C lunch format. The smiles were an interesting juxtaposition to the tears from the assembly. “When I think about it now, it’s perfect, because it strikes that balance

between sadness and happiness, all in one day, Finch said. Open Program and Spanish teacher Kim Radostitis, who also created the school’s freshman transition program Hawks Take Flight, had a vision to do a Merge Daylike event over the summertime. BULLYING CONTINUED ON 2
