If you’re a fall lover, like I am, October is YOUR month! From crisp fall mornings that urge you toward hot mugs of coffee, to golden moonlight that glows – sometimes eerily – across the night sky, to pumpkin flavored… well, everything!

Haunted Forest

promises THRILLS and fun for everyone

S

tep onto the grounds of Old Forest Gate Road, where the pathways of Central Park have been transformed. Take your place among the thousands of innocent spectators who have traversed the most haunted corners of Oak Brook – the Haunted Forest.

The Haunted Forest event, offered since 2003 by the Oak Brook Park District, will once again feature a spectacularly spooky 10,000+ square foot haunted maze along with several new festive features.

See if you can make it through the twists and turns of our life-size haunted maze!

With ghouls and goblins galore, this maze is not for the faint of heart. In fact, parental discretion is advised for thrill seekers under 10 years old, as music, light, fog, strobe lights and creepy characters will all be in close proximity in the maze.

For those looking for a lighter dose of Halloween hijinks, Haunted Forest features a pumpkin patch, face painting, and fireside storytelling. Kiddos can enjoy candy in the haystack, a craft corner, and blow of some steam in the bounce houses. And for a leisurely treat that’s sure to please all the goblins, young and older, families can take a tractor-pulled a hayride through Central Park’s haunted forest.

 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12 6:30-9:30 PM OAK BROOK PARK DISTRICT 1450 FOREST GATE ROAD Want a sneak peek at the thrills and chills of the haunted maze? For kiddos unsure of their limits, come to the Haunted Forests special Maze Preview Night on Thursday, October 10 from 4-6 p.m. Make your way through the maze as many times as you’d like, in the daylight! Scary scenes will be set up, but there will be no actors or spooky special effects.

Just $5 gets you unlimited maze walks on Thursday. For the remainder of the weekend, tickets required for activities vary from free$5, and are sold at the gate.

Snacks and refreshments also are available for purchase.

The maze walks will be the only activity available on Thursday evening. All other features will open Friday night.

While you fall-a-philiacs glory at Jack Frost’s first nip at your nose, Father Time is yelling about the quickly dwindling number of warm, sunny Saturdays to complete those weatherization projects and sundry other unfinished projects from summer before Crazy Jack’s trillions of flaky friends crash down, glorying in exposing every one of the uncompleted tasks.

You know who they are. Even if they don’t inject pumpkin spice into their veins, they still take unending delight in the opportunity to don a pair of boots, perhaps some denim and flannel (or a lot of denim and flannel, as the case may be), a sweater or hoodie, and the occasional scarf, secure in the knowledge they probably won’t resemble a popsicle in July.

They can’t wait to get to the local orchards and farms for the harvest festivals (and record the little ones on the now-ubiquitous jumping pillows.)

And they savor the sight of the brilliant reds, oranges and yellows of the changing leaves.

Don’t misunderstand here. If you pinned me down and asked my favorite months of the year, the first two weeks or so of October in northern Illinois would make a strong argument for the award for “Best Weather in a Supporting Role.”

But as a homeowner, fall also brings with it a sense of existential dread that is just hard to shake. It nags at the back of the mind, at times like a four-year-old

with a never-ending stream of questions about life, the universe and everything, and at other times, a little more insistent, like a middle-schooler with a never-ending stream of challenges to that decision you made yesterday (“Daddy, are you *listening* to me?”)

Consider: Where you autumn-philes may see a miraculous palette of colors, tickling your inner Bob Ross, my inner Bob Vila sees yet another lawn chore waiting to be done. I mean, seriously, why must that World Tree in my yard always wait until just before Thanksgiving to drop its leaves? (Fun

That’s not to say I can’t find joy in the season.

There are few seasonal wonders that can top the sensations of picking apples at a local orchard; helping the kids pick just the right pumpkin; listening to their giggles on the jumping pillow; sitting around a crackling fire in the chill of a mosquito-less autumnal evening; the slight catch of a breath taken by the splendor of a forest preparing for a long winter’s nap.

But somewhere in that, the call for balance grows louder, fueled by the competing goals of being the fun dad, who sets aside time to help his young ones learn to slow down a bit and uncover the hidden delights in any season, and the responsible grownup who can’t ignore the harsh slap of incoming reality so cleverly masked by the autumnal splendor.

The Glass-Half-Full Guy:

‘I DID THAT!’ SURVIVING A BIKE TRIP DOWN THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE STORY AND PHOTOS PROVIDEDº BY PETER STADALSKY

I

lived to tell the tale of riding my mountain bike on all dirt roads from Canada to Mexico along the continental divide mountain range. If you missed my past columns, the route starts up in Banff, Canada and traverses nearly 3000 miles down to the New Mexico/Mexico border.

While the distance seems intimidating, the elevation gain added a greater dimension of gnarliness. The total climbing was over 200,000 feet, which is equivalent to climbing Mount Everest seven times.

With a tent and food strapped to my bike, I made my way southbound through the wilderness on the longest off-road bike route in the world. I was challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally. u PHYSICALLY The greatest physical challenge, beyond riding a bike 12 hours a day, was dealing with a crippling knee injury. Approximately 700 miles into the trip my knee jolted with excruciating pain, 30 miles from any civilization. I had to tie my good foot to the pedal and ride myself one-legged for the 30 miles, then hitchhike to a hospital. After a cortisone shot I was able to nurse my leg and cautiously continue the adventure.

After that point, I had to utilize my good leg to do 70 percent of the work, while nurturing the injured side, still having to ride more than 60 miles a day. u MENTALLY The journey began with a partner, who unfortunately crashed on the third day and had to be shuttled home.

This meant I would embark alone, into the densest

grizzly populated area in North America - notoriously coined “grizzly bear highway.”

Advice from experts is to make plenty of noise to avoid startling a bear, and most importantly, never travel alone (a rule of which I was in clear violation).

As I rode into the dense mountain forests on a winding dirt road, I convinced myself not only that I was crazy, but I also that I would be eaten alive. For the next three days I talked out-loud at the top of my lungs to myself. It sounded like, “hey bear, just passing through, don’t eat me!” My nerves were so hot that even a pebble that skipped along the road made me jump in fright. It took a week for me to get acclimate to the idea I was not the apex of the food chain. u EMOTIONALLY For the majority of the route I had zero cell phone service. I didn’t miss the technology, but it became at times the only connection I had to the world. There would be stretches where I would travel for an entire day without seeing another person. I was surprised at how comforting a paved road or a gas station would become, because I associate those things with people. Some nights I would lay in my tent, camped all alone in the wilderness and dream of company.

And yes, I eventually start talking to myself out loud, this time to ease the deafening silence!

There wasn’t any point on the trip that I wanted to give up, but there were times I was scared I might physically reach a dead end. A few times, carrying my

bike on my back straight up a rocky mountain, I would scream in frustration at how harrowing each step forward was. I had to tell myself over and over again, “all you have to do is make it one foot further, then deal with the next.” u TYPE II FUN When I tell people about my experiences they ask why on earth anyone would want to put themselves through such a thing. There is a term these types of challenges. It’s called “type II fun”.

Type II fun is, in the moment, often excruciating and you wonder why you are there in the first place. But hours or days later, you feel that it was the most amazing experience of your life. It’s about challenging what one thinks is possible for himself, and earning the beautiful things in life. Every downhill coast and gorgeous mountain lake campsite was earned in blood, and sweat, and tears. And for me, that is infinitely more rewarding than those things being served on a platter. It’s about walking away from the experience and knowing I am stronger and braver, and can say with confidence, “I did that!” u Peter Stadalsky is an Aurora resident and adventurer. ecession. There, I said it. My voice has joined the sea of noise whose waves are lapping up on the shores of your mind.

It’s hurricane season and those opining on an economic reversal are approaching a level four storm. The signs are there, we are told. “The yield curve has inverted!” we hear proclaimed in a shrill voice.

“This is always a predictor of a recession!,” we hear.

 NOW WHAT?

Time to take a deep breath, turn off the TV, and clear our minds. It’s been so long since we have had a recession that it is easy to forget that it is an economic decline announced by at least two consecutive quarters of contraction in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). From an investor’s perspective this is worrisome as an economic recession is typically tied to a “Bear Market” which is a decline in the market of 20% or more for a period of time (usually at least two months). Although the Bear last reared his head on December 24th of last year, the last prolonged Bear Market was during the Financial Crisis and ran for 17 months from 2007 into 2009 during which the S&P 500 Index lost 50% of its value. For many of us, this drop left some psychological scars that did not heal. That is precisely why it is so easy today for town criers to stir us up now.

Here’s the deal. Despite best efforts, economic cycles happen. Trying to predict exactly when a Bear Market will begin or end is extremely difficult if not impossible. For those pointing to the inversion of the yield curve (a phenomena where the yield on a 10-year Treasury is lower than that of a 2-year Treasury) as a harbinger of an upcoming recession, the reality is that the actual event of a recession may not occur for two or three years after the inversion.Market response to an inversion can also seem contrary to an upcoming threat. (See “The S&P 500 Tends to Rise After an Inverted Yield Curve”, The Wall Street Journal, Sept. 4th, 2019.)

Q: What, then, is an investor to do?

A: If your financial circumstances have not changed and you have a disciplined and appropriate investment strategy in place, stick with it.
