n behalf of the St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce, I welcome you to our historic “Centennial Celebration” year! Our Chamber was founded in 1922, nearly 88 years after the city of St. Charles was established. In the 100 years that have now passed since 1922, our Chamber has supported the prosperity of our citizens, area businesses and members as our great country navigated through wars, depressions, terrorist attacks, pandemics and more. We understand that in order to truly flourish, we all must share the responsibility of creating economic success through the support and commitment of our members, our committees, volunteers and sponsors.

I am proud of the essential work our Chamber continues to provide in making the greater St. Charles Area a better place to live, work, learn and conduct business.

We are strong, viable and honored to be making a difference in our community with you as our partners! In total, we have conducted over 50 events in this past year alone, providing ample opportunities for

our members to enrich their Chamber experience. I cannot stress how important it is to get involved in our weekly events and activities or our various networking opportunities. The more you put into the Chamber, the more you will get out of it.

n honor of its 100th anniversary, the St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce took a look

back at 1921 and 1922 for its 2021-22 annual community guide and membership directory.

Here’s a glimpse of what life was like 100 years ago!

1921

 Albert Einstein becomes the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics.  Miss America holds its first annual pageant.  The New York Giants win the World Series.

 Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge serve as president and vice president of the U.S., respectively.

1922

 Actresses Betty White and Judy Garland are born this year.

 President Warren Harding has the first radio installed in the White House.  The USA population is approximately 110 million people.  Water skiing is invented.

St. Charles Township

RON JOHNSON, SUPERVISOR St. Charles Township The St. Charles Township, located at 1725 Dean St., has offices for the supervisor, clerk, town board of trustees, assessor and road district office. The Township cemetery office is located in Union Cemetery off of North Fifth Avenue.

The supervisor is CEO of the Township and oversees the Township cemeteries’ day-to-day operations. The town clerk is the record keeper. The board of trustees oversees and audits all expenses. The assessor is

responsible for appraising over 22,000 parcels of property in the Township.

To date, there have been 18 supervisors to hold this position in the last 170 years of Township government.

The highway commissioner is responsible for maintaining approximately 90 miles of road in the unincorporated area of the Township.

St. Charles Township maintains six cemeteries, four of which are active. St. Charles Township started maintaining cemeteries as early as 1945 when it took over North and South Cemeteries. South Cemetery predated the city by 19 years, having been founded in 1815.

Wayne

The Village of Wayne straddles Kane and DuPage counties. According to Data USA, Wayne has a population of 2,439 and a median household income of $134,659. Wayne grew as a village in the mid-1800s when a surveyor and farmer began breeding horses on Oaklawn Farm, now known as Dunham Castle, according to the village’s website.

“It is one of the few communities in northeastern Illinois that provides and encourages equestrian uses and facilities,” the website states. For more information on the village’s history, visit www.villageofwayne.org.

VIBRANT DINING SCENE From lunch counters to the rise of fine dining, St. Charles has always offered an array of options

S

t. Charles has long stood as one of the Chicago area’s top destinations for a great meal and a fun evening out.

“It’s just amazing to look back and see how we’ve evolved, from serving up meals from hotel kitchens to overnight guests, to now a true destination, with a ton of variety and tremendous dining options,” says Lindsay Judd, executive director of the St. Charles History Museum.

From its earliest days, the city welcomed guests as one of the last stops for those heading west from Chicago. Guests could find comfortable accommodations in local hotels — and, of course, a meal, either from the hotel itself or at one of the city’s bakeries or taverns.

By 1885, the city’s first true restaurant,

Harroun’s Restaurant, opened its doors at the corner of West Main and First streets, offering “ice cream, oysters, sardines, breads, baked goods, candies and canned goods,” says Judd.

By the 1920s, an assortment of restaurants had opened throughout town, led by the trend of lunch counters and cafes.

“St. Charles boomed in the 1920s, and so did restaurants in town,” says Judd.

Hotel Baker and the Arcada both opened their own restaurants, welcoming guests to luxurious dining experiences. Taverns, like the historic Ray’s Evergreen Tavern, beckoned workers with the promise of a drink, perhaps a sandwich and a bit of fun after a hard day’s — or night’s — work. The legacy of that establishment continues in its current iteration as The Evergreen Pub &

Grill, in the same spot, at 1400 W. Main St. With the onset of the Great Depression and the rationing amid World War II, the restaurant scene quieted. But once the war ended, the idea of an evening out on the town captivated the attention of those in St. Charles, fueling a renewed boom in restaurants.

“The 1950s were celebratory, and the idea of going out to eat was jazzy and exciting,” says Judd.

Tom Anderson, whose family has owned and operated longtime St. Charles mainstay Colonial Cafe for more than a century, says an evening out, with a white tablecloth, was always a treat. He recalls, for instance, his father taking him to Hotel Baker for dinner for his 16th birthday. “We always had some nice dining spots,” he says. “But most

people still ate most of their meals at home.”

In the 1950s, advertisements cropped up for lounges serving fine steak and seafood dinners to a generation that “just wanted to eat real meat again,” Judd says.

The rise of the automobile and America’s new obsession with teenager culture led to the arrival of drive-in restaurants, like Rex’s Cork & Fork, which advertised its “King Burger” for 90 cents. Such establishments became the place to be in the evening, especially for many young people.

It was in the 1950s that Colonial Cafe began slinging up tasty hot food items in addition to its frozen treats. Colonial opened its first and still current location on East Main Street in 1959, serving up an assortment of burgers, sandwiches and other food items, catching the new wave as a way, initially, of selling more ice cream, says Anderson.

“More than half of our business was still selling ice cream,” says Anderson. “Served in glass, still, not in paper to-go cups.”

At the same time, a whole new group of dining establishments opened, fueled by America’s new fascination with ethnic cuisine, such as Chinese-style dishes or Italian food — pizza, in particular.

And still more innovations came in the 1960s.

Colonial, for instance, expanded its menu to begin serving breakfast, driven by the need to serve guests at the hotels that sprang up nearby.

Ultimately, the restaurant chose to serve breakfast foods all day.

“Breakfast at Colonial became a popular choice among a lot of folks,” he says. “And we still are.”

Today, Colonial has diversified its menu further, offering such modern favorites as chicken and waffles alongside traditional favorites like pot roast and meatloaf.

In the 1960s, St. Charles welcomed its first McDonald’s restaurant.

And a decade later, fast food restaurants and chains had become ubiquitous in St. Charles.

In the 1980s, the first Mexican restaurants began to spring up in town.

“The 1980s was the real tipping point,” says Judd. “It’s when restaurants started really becoming a part of the fabric of people’s everyday lives, in ways they had never been before.”

In the years since, the restaurant scene in St. Charles has only continued to grow and expand with an ever deepening array of exciting new food and drink choices. Established staples include Rookies, The Village Squire, Brunch Cafe, Francesca’s by the River, Alexander’s Cafe and more.

St. Charles continues to build on its history as a suburban dining and entertainment destination.

Retailers find success through strong relationships with customers, community

F

or the last 47 years, shoppers have turned the pages at Town House Books in St. Charles, finding the perfect titles for enjoyment, enrichment and gifts too. Manager Heidi Schmidt has relished her role as the book buyer, often making note of which customers will want the new titles she orders for the shop.

“I’ve helped people shop for books for their children and now their children are grown and buying books for their children.

It’s such a delight and such a unique experience to be able to help people find books and to be a part of the community,” Schmidt says.

In the past year the independent bookstore has expanded with online shopping, but Schmidt says the staff continues to work hard to maintain connections with customers.

From helping customers select books for their children to now, seeing two and three generations of a family shop for books is something longtime staff like Schmidt

relish at the independent shop. “That’s such a beautiful experience and to know we are a meaningful part of people’s lives in this way,” Schmidt says.

After managing a business out of her home for the last nine years, St. Charles resident Mandy Buerster decided it was time to find a new space and a new business. She and her family launched Magnolia Soap and Bath Company in May 2021 — and within two months of opening the business was listed as a top five grossing shop in the Magnolia Company.

Her longtime connections in the community have helped her forge business partnerships. For birthday parties, guests can indulge at Kimmer’s Ice Cream while their creations dry. She has also teamed up with The Wine Exchange.

“Retail can be sustained in St. Charles,” Buerster says. “People are craving it and I feel like our little shop is a great example.”

At Magnolia, customers can find an array of soaps, body butters, shower steamers and much more, all handmade right in the store at its “bar.”

“In the back of the shop is a full bar where you can make soaps, and instead of bottles of liquors we have our scents and you can even sit at the bar stools,” Buerster says.

After hours the store hosts birthday parties

Building strong partnerships is also on tap at Trend + Relic, where owners Heather Corcoran and Karri Custardo have built a strong following since opening in summer 2020. The store, selling an array of home furnishings and decor, expanded its footprint and increased its inventory to meet customers’ demands. In addition to the retail space, there is workspace for private parties as well as demonstrations and classes, which fill quickly as customers clamor to learn DIY refurbishing or enjoy an evening of crafting with friends.

“There’s a great vibe in St. Charles and we’ve definitely become a destination,” says Corcoran.

The arts have always provided a means of expression in St. Charles, dating back to the Chamber’s beginning

R

oughly three years before the St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce was established in 1922, the Fox Valley was recovering from the Spanish flu pandemic, as was the rest of the world.

As present-day Chamber members navigate the uncertainty of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, arts and entertainment entities within the organization strive to offer an escape just the same.

“Being able to provide them that level of creativity and kind of give them something to help resemble normal life again and give them the freedom of expression, that goes a long way for people in these times beyond the core needs of food, water and shelter,” says James Tracy, executive director of Water Street Studios in Batavia.

Make no mistake: The accoutrements and conveniences of being

entertained have undergone drastic changes in the past century. Still, the essence of art endures.

Today, the Chamber counts among its ranks 16 organizations dedicated to fostering art and culture in the community.

With some of them, what’s old is new again. For proof, look no further than Club Arcada, a speakeasy-themed lounge within the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles. The spot opened in 2017, around the time the theatre celebrated its 90th anniversary. Rejuvenated interest in the 1920s and 1930s followed and hasn’t exactly left, even as Onesti Entertainment president and CEO Ron Onesti and Co. routinely welcome acts of the late 20th century to town.

After pivoting back to live shows and visits in recent months, owners and executives are eager to help patrons re-create the experiences they have known for much of their lives.

At Water Street Studios, which is housed in an 1886 building, Tracy feels the additional history serves to augment the art.

“It plays well into the historical

aspect of what the building is and it kind of helps represent our culture going forward,” he says. “We’re not the Louvre, we’re not the Art Institute, we’re not whatever art museum out in New York.

We’re a much smaller but much homier scale with local artists, local interests and that type of thing. And so being in a local building that’s part of the town’s history, we basically hope to be another chapter of that history.”

As well as an avenue for release. That part, even over the course of 100 years, never changes.

FOUNDATION STARTED WITH POTTAWATOMIE PARK St. Charles Park District has expanded to 64 parks and facilities in the last 110 years

F

rom a peaceful walk among the trees to the bustle of busy playgrounds and soccer fields, St. Charles Park District has ample recreation opportunities for all of its residents.

Today, the park district has 64 parks and facilities, which equates to 1,459 acres of parks, recreation and special use properties within the 36 square miles of St. Charles boundaries.

And it all started with one park.

Pottawatomie Park was the first park incorporated in the city after the establishment of a park district in 1911.

Located along the Fox River and just off the downtown business district, this park was a favorite destination for leisure activities. At that time the park featured a picnic area,

a merry-go-round, swings and a refreshment stand. There was an area for ball playing and an ornate tower to overlook the river. There was a pavilion for dancing and a beach carved out of the riverbank to increase accessibility for boaters and swimmers.

With the establishment of the first Park Board came the plans for creating parks and open spaces. The board oversaw the purchase of land for Pottawatomie Park and according to the community history, it was one of the first public parks established in the Illinois Park Act. Through the years, Park Board members have seen the growth and development of Pottawatomie Park. While the size and amenities have changed, the initial vision for the park remains evident today

as people enjoy cruises on the river with the paddlewheel boats and play a round of golf while looking out at the beautiful Fox River.

Whether strolling through the park for a moment of peaceful contemplation or enjoying a busy afternoon with the family, the park remains a place for all ages to enjoy.

Through the years the park district has continued to grow, adding and building new parks, honoring the community’s history and those who have contributed to the park district, which marked its 100th anniversary in 2011. It was in that same year the

Hickory Knolls Discovery Center opened, allowing the park district to expand its efforts to educate all ages on conservation and the native species of plants and animals with a new dedicated space.

From dedicated open spaces to bustling areas, St. Charles Park District continues to garner recognition for its ability to create places, spaces and activities for its residents. The awards may adorn walls, but the true prize is the space to let your dog run in the shade, the freshly cut grass on a soccer field and the laughter of children as they race down a slide.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED Area nonprofits assist with hunger, holidays and more, all with the help of volunteers

T

he St. Charles area is home to many incredible businesses, including organizations whose mission is simply the business of helping people and making our communities even better places to call home.

These organizations run the gamut of causes. Some exist simply to ensure our neighbors have full pantries, full stomachs and full hearts. Others seek to ensure all kids have a gift under the tree at the holidays. Others ensure our most vulnerable neighbors have a voice and an advocate. Still others seek simply to help our children and older friends reach their fullest potential, in school and in life.

And others exist simply to spread the beauty of art and culture.

Center, the Food Bank has called the St. Charles area home since 1995.

But no matter the specifics of their call, St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce’s member nonprofit organizations have long stood as essential elements to the success of the community they call home.

Together with more than 900 local partner food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens, it serves a geographic area stretching across most of Chicago’s collar counties, as well as beyond in northern Illinois. The organization sources its food from major corporate supermarkets and other food suppliers, and is supported by more than 47,000 donors annually.

Few have had a greater impact than Northern Illinois Food Bank.

For decades, this organization has distributed healthy and nutritious food and household essentials — along with heaping helpings of hope, joy and dignity — to millions throughout Chicago’s suburbs.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food Bank has reimagined and redesigned many of its programs and policies, says Food Bank spokesperson Jennifer Clark.

“From the beginning, we were adamant, we would not close, but would rise to meet the challenges, and meet the needs of our communities,” says Clark.

While volunteers had for decades helped people work through the challenges of obtaining assistance in person, with the arrival of COVID-19, Northern Illinois Food Bank “completely reconfigured” its process to allow the process to work over the phone and online. “It was essential to keep our employees, volunteers and our clients, well and healthy,” Clark says.

But the core of the operation could not be conducted remotely, she adds, so the organization also redesigned its food packing and distribution operations to further streamline the process in a socially

distanced manner, with fewer volunteers.

In all, 15,000 volunteers assisted the Food Bank in 2020, collectively putting in more than 130,000 volunteer hours just from July 2020 to June 2021 alone.

“It was all hands on deck, and all brains on deck,” says Clark. “We can’t say enough for all the people who stepped up, and stepped in, to help us.”

Other organizations work in a smaller sphere, but have no less of an impact on those they are able to help.

Big Hearts of Fox Valley, for instance, has helped hundreds of families in St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 to meet basic needs for their children.

The work began in 2014 when Jennifer and Minor Mobley, owners of Excel Automotive Repair in St. Charles, launched a Christmas sponsorship program to ensure financial

need doesn’t prevent any child in the St. Charles area from experiencing the joy of opening a gift during the holidays.

The Mobleys partnered with district social workers to locate families and have distributed more than 15,000 gifts to children through the years.

The Christmas sponsorship program remains central to Big Hearts’ mission, beginning every year around the onset of fall. But Big Hearts has expanded its mission to now help local families meet other basic needs for their children throughout the school year.

“We know how hard school can be when children have everything they need,” says Jennifer Mobley. “But what about those children that are also having to worry about wearing the same pair of pants all week long or the child that doesn’t have a warm winter coat or gloves for recess?”

Big Hearts is assisted every year by “hundreds of volunteers” who help Big Hearts serve more than 700 children, from infant to 18 years old, annually.

“We are fortunate to live in a community that cares. I get stopped in the street by people sharing fond memories of the wrapping party and I am frequently contacted by people who want to help,” Mobley says. “Sometimes it is because they once needed help and someone helped them, or it could be a volunteer group from school or a family that wants to instill a love of charity and giving within their own children.

“We could not do this without the loving support from our community.”

The St. Charles Public Library’s historic building has reopened after $18.6 million renovation

T

here is so much at the St. Charles Public Library that Edith Craig was excited to show off.

For more than a year, the library underwent a transformation.

And Craig, as director of the St. Charles Public Library District, has had a front row seat throughout the long process of helping the venerable old building make the jump to the 21st century — and, perhaps, beyond.

“The biggest benefit to our community is caring for a 115-year-old building and its

additions, to last 100 more years,” Craig says.

Craig notes the exterior of the library was beautified with “prairie and meadow river plantings,” while a new sunken terrace garden, just outside the library’s lowerlevel youth services area, will beckon visitors to perhaps sit for a bit, perhaps

The library’s interior was fully gutted and rebuilt, allowing a new design that Craig says allows the library to “maximize patron space.” Children and parents, for instance, will find “more interactive play, more study spaces, more places to meet up with groups.” Teens will find “a dedicated enclosed room that will allow them to game, study and collaborate,” Craig says.

While retaining its ties to its deep history, the library now boasts a host of new features, designed to meet the needs of today’s patrons of all ages. It reopened to the public in mid-July.

are items commonly found in other makerspaces and items that fit well into the size of our space.”

STC Creative offers studios for creativity of all kinds. The space, for instance, will include a sound studio to aid in such digital ventures as podcasting, and tools for physical media — Cricut, Brother ScanNCut, 3D printers, heat press, Xyron Creative Station and 28-inch vinyl cutter, among others.

But some of the biggest changes may have occurred in the parts of the library that visitors don’t necessarily see, but most definitely feel.

St. Charles Public Library IT Educator Sarah Pistilli says the creation of STC Creative was guided by what library administrators learned from Making+Learning, an agreement between the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Pistilli says the library then searched out other “makerspaces” in other libraries throughout the Chicago area and in other states.

“This helped me compile a list of equipment and programs offered by other libraries,” Pistilli says. “The equipment chosen for STC Creative

The building was redesigned to allow for more natural light on all three floors, even in the lower level. All light fixtures are now energy efficient LEDs. The library’s heating, cooling and ventilation system was also overhauled, with a new system that pumps in 30% more fresh air — an unexpectedly key feature to mitigate the spread of airborne infectious diseases, such as the coronavirus.

Staff spaces were moved largely behind the scenes, Craig says, leaving “the heart of the library for the public to enjoy.”

Craig notes the library further boosted its accessibility for all patrons, as well, with

more ramps and an elevator that reaches all three floors. Visitors will find more handicapped-accessible parking and better seating for patrons of all physical abilities throughout.

Technological access and ease were also at the heart of the project, Craig says. For instance, a new radio frequency identification system enables the library to immediately check in all materials returned by patrons, speeding the borrow and return process.

The project is the result of years of preparation, dating back to 2008. All told, the project cost $18.6 million, primarily funded through money the library had saved through the years.

About $5 million was funded through a bond sale in 2019.

Craig notes the project broke ground just as the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.

But the work did not stop.

She says the project came in on budget and on time, in large part “because of the dedication of the full project team and partners — and sprinkle that with luck.”

“We’re seeing more professionals speak up and we’re grateful for that because our goal is to reduce the stigma of seeking help for your mental health,” says Ali Barnum of Barnum Counseling. “The pandemic has obviously lasted a lot longer than anticipated and we’re still seeing individuals who are struggling.”

Barnum, a licensed clinical professional counselor, launched her counseling and therapy services practice in St. Charles in 2018. “We have definitely grown as the community’s needs have grown for these services,” she says. “Our goal has been to increase access to care for the community across counties because we know how important access to care is.”

The St. Charles area is blessed to have mental health professionals nearby. “You don’t have to go city to city,” Barnum says.

“Also, for those who might have lower income we have a sliding scale for those underinsured or not insured.”

A person’s mental health conditions as

well as how those conditions affect their behavior, mood and thinking are going to vary. Likewise, the level of assistance they might require is going to differ by the patient. What seems minor to one person might be a major cause of someone else’s struggles.

Barnum says the first step toward getting professional mental health help is by finding it. To find a list of mental health providers and individual therapists, she advises searching online and working with your insurance.

I

t’s no secret: Manufacturing is the backbone of the economy. The St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce for several years now has partnered with area schools to let students experience tours supplied by local manufacturers across various industries, as well as panel discussions.

The goal is to raise awareness among students of what manufacturing jobs are available and what they entail.

Those partnerships impact

the manufacturing sector and create opportunities for the students in St. Charles Community Unit School District 303, Northern Kane schools and Elgin Community College.

“We’re hearing from manufacturers all over the country that they’re hurting for employees, so we want to jumpstart that next generation of students as the workforce is aging,” says Terry Stroh, director of the Northern Kane County Regional Vocational System. “This year’s

Manufacturing Month, which is October, is going to invite some middle school programs as well as high school. Last year and this year the tours have been virtual due to the pandemic. Students can see what the companies are all about and if they really want to go down that path as far as their education goes.”

At the end of the month Stroh planned to run a remote panel discussion where students can talk live with those manufacturers.

“It’s been a great partnership with the Chamber,” says Stroh.

“We hope to grow it more in the future.”

Carol Smith, director of communications for St. Charles CUSD 303, witnessed students participate in pre-pandemic, in-person tours. “We’re so fortunate as a district to have a partnership with the Chamber,” she says. “It helps our students in our Career Tech Ed classes see what the manufacturing industry

is like and what the career opportunities might be, whether they become engineers or go to work directly out of high school.

We’re fortunate that companies share their stories with our students.”

“This is a regional effort,” says Kathy Meisinger, director of strategic partnerships and experiential learning at Elgin Community College. “The Chamber really brought together all of the players to make it easier for students to have this experience. That experience, as a learning piece of the puzzle, cannot be understated. Working with employers helps us help students build their professional behavior, but more importantly it allows employers to focus on onboarding and recruitment that allows them to help new employees come into their facilities. It’s a culture issue. It’s really been wonderful. We all focus on identifying employers’ needs and then delivering.”
