Lawrence Hubbard, a mainstay at the Carroll County Fair since 1983, retired Aug. 13 after nearly four decades of working at the fair with the Carroll County Sheriff’s auxiliary. Hubbard, shown here with daughter Sheryl Hubbard, started with the mounted patrol, parking cars while atop his sturdy steed, Cherokee. At 90 years old, Lawrence said it’s time to step aside from his duties. The Lanark alum never let hard work or hardship keep him down, including losing his left arm when he was only 16. He still lettered in football.

Sara Norman Summer Intern ColumnGuest

Schools are officially back in ses sion, so for many people summer is over.Imove back to school this week end, so I have finished my summer internship here. It’s crazy how fast everything goes in the summertime, but time also flies by during the busi ness of the school year, too. I’ll be going back for my third year at Olivet Nazarene University. I’ll be on the swim team and starting prac tice a few days after I move in, so I really hit the ground running. I plan to graduate in May 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, but after that I have no idea what my future holds. Next summer, my plan is to work in another internship to get an idea of another career I could pursue. It’s been a great summer for me, and I have enjoyed my time as the intern at the Carroll County Farm Bureau. It was a brand-new experi ence for me to be working in an office, and I have learned so much more than I ever thought I could here.Ican’t wait to take these skills with me in my last few years of col lege and use them in my future career(s) as well. I can’t say I ever pictured myself working in ag, but I really enjoyed it at the Farm Bureau. Some of the things I enjoyed most over the summer were working with Melinda (Ag in the Classroom coordi nator) to put on the library programs for the kids, experiencing the drivethrough membership appreciation dinner, organizing the peach orders, and just getting to work in the office withTheChas.library programs were so much fun, and I really enjoyed get ting to work with so many kids and seeing how excited they were to learn about water and bees and how they’re so important to agriculture. Working the drive-through appre ciation dinner and handling the peaches, I was able to meet and talk to so many people! Meeting members of the Farm Bureau was a great expe rience to talk to so many different people.Getting to be in the office everyday and learning basic skills has given me so much knowledge. It was awesome getting to work with Chas and bounce ideas around with somebody else. U.S. at (815) 632-2566 knull@saukvalley.com BUREAU

The Farm Bureau was a great first internship to have because of the relaxed atmosphere and how willing Chas was to teach me so much about herOnejob.of the biggest takeaways I’ll bring with me from this job is how important educating about agricul ture is. Since my dad is a farmer, I’ve been around it my entire life, but this summer I was able to view it from a perspective of those who have no exposure to it at all. It’s always funny answering ques tions from my friends at school about how it all works and trying to explain to them the difference between sweet corn and field corn. I’ve realized that it’s so important to keep educating about agriculture because it makes such a huge difference not only in this community, but far beyond. More people need to understand the process of how food goes from farm to table, and that’s the mission of Illinois Farm Bureau. There are so many careers surrounding agriculture, and each one is important to that mission. Like I said, I never pictured myself working in agriculture, but I’ve real ized that after this summer it is a possi bility.Iappreciate the support and kind words from everyone this summer! I enjoyed meeting so many of the Farm Bureau members, and it was great to talk to all of you. I love that my network got a little bigger this summer. Good luck to everyone in harvest season!

Resthave Care & Rehabilitation in Morrison has had several donations of corn this year. “The residents are very excited about this and were caught shucking a batch. Several were laughing and said they had ‘corn coming out their ears!’” said Karla Brun, marketing director. Assisted Living residents and Res thave dietary staff shucked the corn together.Thedietary department froze 44 bags to enjoy at a later date. “One resident said “special yummy treat’ when they have the corn that has been frozen,” Brun said. “Dietary Man ager Tawnya Denning grinned and said it should be enough corn for seven meals. Resthave thanks the Bealer, Vandervinne Tegeler and Heyvaert families for thinking of our residents and donating corn this year. Not only do the residents love to eat it, but it has been a fun activity for them as well!”

Jenny was a generous, caring, compassion ate, and loyal friend and sister. She never met an animal she didn’t like or want to take care of. Jenny had a magical green thumb. Her African Violets filled tables and were lush and full and beautifully colored. She coaxed the most beautiful flowers out of hundreds of cacti, sized from a ping pong ball to a wash tub, year after year for decades. Viewing her flowering cacti was a garden walk destina tion for the public during the years she lived in Racine, Wi. Jenny spent much of her life cooking for others. She was a terrific cook although she never mastered Grammy Haas’ maldasha recipe much to everyone’s dismay. In fulfillment of her wishes, her body was an anatomical gift to Science Care and no formal funeral services will be held. Family and friends will gather together for a send-off befitting her personality in the near future.

More than 70 people were involved in the survey, including representatives from federal and state agencies – the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Environmen tal Protection Agency, the Iowa Depart ment of Natural Resources and the Illi nois Natural History Survey. They were aided by Constellation‘s Quad Cities Nuclear Station employees, college students, a few retirees and even world-renowned mussel expert and author Kevin Cummings. The surveyors “pollywogged” or col lected mussels by walking and crawling along the shoreline and shallow water in search of the bivalves. They also cleaned and removed all zebra mussels attached to the shells of mussels to promote the health and vigor of the Cordova mussel bed. This helps offset native mussel decline brought by the introduction of zebra mussels in the early 1990s. Some zebra mussels will be brought to a lab for more studies. They also reviewed several influ ences and trends at this environmen tally significant mussel bed, such as overall condition of the mussel bed pop ulation in relation to the amount of zebra mussels found and a general assessment of the larger or smaller instance of zebra mussel infestation.

“It’s a good relationship, getting better with Clark being here as the new head coach,” junior co-captain Laith Al-Saidi said. “Usually teams take time to get a strong season with a new coach, but having the past couple of years together, and this year get ting more players in, it’s going to be a lot better. We’re getting familiar with him and his plays and what he wants us to Thatdo.”relationship was the first thing on Clark’s to-do list when he got to Savanna. Coming from a much larger school, it was a bit of an adjustment, but after growing up in a small town, he knew it was of utmost importance if he wanted to rebuild the program. “Building the relationships, that’s one of the joys of coaching, getting to know these players, the parents, the community, it definitely makes it a lot easier as a coach to be able to build those relationships,” he said. “When I first came in, it was a big adjustment. I came from a 6A school in Mississippi, just south of Memphis, 1,850 students, and I come here to a much smaller school.“Igrew up in a small town, and I know getting that familiarity, getting to know the players, building that rela tionship, that takes years. The West Carroll football players are counting down the days until their Week 2 game on Sept. 2 against Fulton. After a shortened 2021 spring sea son and a 2021 fall season spent play ing JV games, the Thunder are poised to play varsity football for the first time in three years. And with that comes the team’s first home game since Week 7 of the 2019 season, on Oct. 11, 2019 – a 22-0 win over Milledgeville, coincidentally, that made them playoff-eligible at 5-2. “We’re very excited. This is the first season to be hosting a home football game for a varsity team in three years for us,” coach Teo Clark said. “My first year in the spring of COVID, we couldn’t play on our field because of three feet of snow that melted on the field.”Italso will be the first full varsity season for Clark as head coach since he was hired before the COVID year. He came to the area from northern Mississippi and has coached just three varsity games in his first two seasons. But the upside of that is the bond he’s been able to build with his players as they went through a couple of lessthan-ideal seasons, and that will put the Thunder ahead of most teams look ing at their first varsity season under a new head coach.

West Carroll thrilled to be back for 2022 season

By TY REYNOLDS

Ty Reynolds – treynolds@shawmedia.com West Carroll coach Teo Clark (right) watches his players during a blocking drill Aug. 10 in Savanna. The Thunder will play a varsity season this fall after playing a JV schedule last year because of a low number of upperclassmen in the program.

See WEST CARROLL, Page 16

No matter what happens as the Thunder try to find their footing again, the players understand and appreciate what it means to be back at the varsity ranks, and it’s not something they take for granted. And they’re ready to embrace whatever 2022 has in store for them.

“When a lot of these juniors – our main contribu tors – were freshmen, they had opportunities to play in that spring, so to ask them to go down and play fresh-soph last year wasn’t an easy decision by any means,” Clark said. “But we’re excited to be back this season. And not just the players, but the community really wants this and really needs this. Everybody I talk to, they ask me ‘Are we going to have a team this year?’ I think everybody around here is Juniorexcited.”co-captain

The Sterling boys golf team dropped a tight nonconference dual Thursday at PrairieView Golf Course, falling to Stillman Valley by one shot, 168-169. Stillman’s Owen Dunseth was medalist with a 37, two shots better than runner-up Cam O’Brien of Sterling. Mason Hubbard shot a 41, Trevor Dir fired a 42, and Carter Morris added a 47 for the Golden Warriors, while Braden Hartman and Cale Cushman both had 49s. Rock Falls 178, Genoa-Kingston 200: The Rockets improved to 4-1 on the season with a Big Northern Confer ence dual victory at Rock River Golf & Pool. Conner Porter led Rock Falls with a 42, and Carter Downs was one shot back after a 43. Brody VanWeelden fired a 46, Colby Ward shot a 47, Nick Vickers had a 48, and Cheyenne Hansen added a 53.

The Cogs’ Landon Ritchie was medalist with a 4-over-par 38. Oregon 199, West Carroll 237: The Hawks shot the five lowest scores in a nonconference dual at Silver Ridge. Dom Terlikowski was medalist with a 48, and Kylar Early was runner-up with a 49 for Oregon. Brady Davis fired a 50, Brogan Wilkinson shot a 52, and Logan Sarver added a 53. Dillon Hill led West Carroll with a 55, while Thomas Krontz fired a 56, Alex Hardin had a 59, and Wilson Bressler added a 67. Girls golf Oregon hosts West Carroll: Ava Hackman shot a 40 to lead the Hawks in a dual at Silver Ridge against the Thunder, who did not field a full team.

Victoria Reiland led West Carroll with a 52, and Carissa Andrews and Brianna Jensen both shot 67s. Winnebago 206, Dixon 220: Katie Drew shot an even-par 36 to win medalist honors, but the Duchesses dropped a BNC dual at ReeseWestlake.Dambman fired a 59, Zoey Williams shot a 62, and Tya Collins had a 63 to round out the team score. “We’re excited to be able to pass and run. I think we’ll be able to attack with everything,” Boardman said. “We want to move the offense around, give the defense a nontraditional look, something they’re not used to, and just go out and give it our all, run hard, following our blocks. We can’t do that with out the guys up front. Staying on our blocks is a big thing; we’ve got a lot of new linemen, big linemen, and it’ll be important just working as a team together.”Defensively, the Thunder know they’ll have their hands full in the NUIC, one of the best smallschool conferences in the state. But as happy as they are to be playing varsity football again, there likely won’t be any fear handling the strong offen sive attacks in the league. “We want to be quick, read the offense and know how to react to it,” Al-Saidi said. “We just want to give it our all, go full speed and don’t be afraid.”

AJ Boardman said it was tough not playing varsity football last year after taking some lumps as a freshman starting line backer in the spring of 2021, but he also realizes that it was a good opportunity for the team to jell and learn against more evenly matched competi tion.“Getting some reps as a team down at our own age level again was really nice. We could work as a team, understand that we weren’t going to get pushed around as much as we would have if we were playing varsity,” he said. “We were at our own level and doing the things we needed to do, learning the system and how we needed to play the game. It really was a bounce-back year to understand the new offense with Clark, let him set his tone here, as well as the new coaching staff.”

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Boardman will start at quarterback for the Thunder, and Clark classifies him as a “strong passer and hard runner.” Both QB and coach are confident in the receivers and running backs around Boardman, and also believe the line will grow together and mesh well as the season goes on.

Last year, a lack of upperclassmen playing foot ball forced West Carroll to play a JV schedule with a team full of sophomores and freshmen. Despite playing against opponents their own age, it was a step down for the sophomores, who had played roles on the varsity team during the delayed and shortened COVID-19 season in the spring.

West Carroll starts the season running the gauntlet, opening against defending NUIC champ Durand-Pecatonica, then hosting Fulton – which advanced to the 1A quarterfinals last season – in Week 2. Lincoln Trail champ Abingdon-Avon, another 1A quarterfinalist, visits in Week 3, then it’s defending 1A state champion Lena-Winslow in Savanna for Week 4. “It’s a challenging conference. I believe we have one of the hardest four-game stretches in the state in 1A to start the season, comparatively: four teams with about 40 wins on their résumé from last year, two conference champions and a state champion,” Clark said. “We’ve only got two or three seniors, so we’re always going to be the youngest team on the field. Knowing what we’re up against with these schools in this conference, we’re going to have to be creative, we’re going to have to match the speed and“I’mintensity.excited as a coach because you always want to go up against the best because that shows you where you are and where you need to be. So I’m grateful to be able to provide this for our players.”

“We’re a lot more excited to come into this year, be back on varsity and keep going forward as a team,” Al-Saidi said. “I feel like being able to play Friday nights under the lights, and having a lot more players, we have a lot more we can do for the season and give our fans a good show.”

Lexi Davis fired a 56, Hailey-Jane Becker had a 58, and Kendra Ehrler and Aniyah Sarver both shot 61s as Oregon finished with a 215 as a team. Sarah Eckardt added a 52.

In 2018, every one received a new Medicare card in the mail. Scam mers are now trying to use this old scam with a new twist. How the scam works is that the fraudsters will call a beneficiary and ask them if they have received their “new” card in the mail. They tell them that the new card is either gold, plastic or has a chip in it. They will then ask the beneficiary to confirm all their personal information and then the consumer never receives that new “card.” Please remember that Medicare will NEVER call you. you or someone you know has been a victim of a potential Medicare card scam, please call the Illinois SMP Hotline at (800) 699-9043.
