Second fire in eight months strikes Lanark ag business

LANARK – The cause of a fire that burned the Carroll Service Co. build ing in the 300 block of Carroll Street on Aug. 4 still is under investigation, Fire Chief Cory Barnes said. It’s the second fire in eight months to damage Carroll Service properties. No one was injured in the fire that broke out about 6 a.m. in the small building, which is separate from the office at 504 W. state Route 64. Lanark and Shannon firefighters responded, but stopped using water, evacuated the building and began to contain the runoff as soon as they real ized ag products stored there had spilled out of their containers. The Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies were called to make sure the products were prop erly contained, and the company still is doing inventory checks to identify what products and chemicals were involved, General Manager Chase Sellnow said Wednesday. The EPA has been on-site since, monitoring and advising on the cleanup effort, Sellnow said. There is no danger to the general population or the city, he added. Although that building is not in use, the rest of Carroll Services Co. is up and running, Sellnow said It’s been a rough year for the com pany, which lost its nearly-50-year-old Lanark Building Center, home to a lumberyard, hardware store and ag co-op, to a massive fire that began about 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9. It took until 1 p.m. the next day to clear the scene; fire departments from five counties battled the blaze, Barnes said at the time. No decisions have been made on whether to rebuild that site, which is nearby at 213 W. Carroll St., Sellnow said. That fire, which officials said was not suspicious, started in the work shop and destroyed the building, its contents, a forklift and two pickup trucks. A cause has not yet been deter mined, the Fire Marshal’s Office said. Carroll Service Co. has been in business in this Carroll County village of about 1,500 since 1963.

Dilapidated properties, dock part of council discussion

ADVOCATEPRAIRIE

The Savanna City Council approved a recommendation by the Building and Public Property Committee to purchase eight dilapidated properties in the city at a cost not to exceed $810 each. The council made the decision to purchase the properties in order to have better control over them and eliminate unsightly buildings, a staple of new Mayor Val Gunnarsson’s agenda.Twoof the properties are on Bowen Street, five are on Chicago Avenue and one is a lot on CommitteeViaduct.Chairman Nick Law also discussed the city’s plans to acquire and deal with two “danger ous” properties in town, 246 and 252 Clay Street. “The plan,” Gunnarsson said, “is to eliminate these two in short order.”Gunnarsson also discussed plans to apply for a grant to renovate the boat dock area from the Illinois Depart ment of Natural GunnarssonResources.saidSavanna has about a mile of gorgeous shoreline that people 130 years ago had the foresight to say, “let’s not build there” so now we have this access but people coming to Savanna can’t get to it. He said the goal was to have a way for families to be able to take cruises on the river through a public access dock.

Earleen Hinton/Shaw Media Cleanup continues at a Carroll Service Co. building in Lanark after a fire Aug. 4 that involved ag products that had spilled from their contain ers. The EPA has been on-site since, monitoring and advising the company on the cleanup effort.

Ihope everyone is soaking in the last bit of summer this month! With school starting up, things will get super busy with those activi ties, and I feel like summer is slipping away very quickly. With August, we have a few things wrapping up here, as well as a couple of things to look forward to this fall. We also hope that everyone had a good time at the Carroll County Fair this year! That always seems to be one of the last indicators that summer is coming to a close, and we hope every one that went stayed safe and had fun. Congrats to all our Ninja Farmer participants for completing the course! That is always a fun event for our Young Leaders to put together, and we hope that your kids enjoyed it, too. With free ice cream involved, it’s always a good time. This year we also had signs made up to be placed around the fair. Hope fully you saw those and enjoyed read ing the informational graphics. It’s our job to always continue to educate on agriculture, and there’s no better place to do so. Along with the fair happening, we had our peach pickup day last Thurs day. It was a beautiful morning to pick up some peaches. Thank you to all those who ordered peaches and cobbler this year. We hope that you enjoy them! We also wanted to send our appreci ation to those who came to the informa tional wind farm meeting last week. It was good to see that landowners are interested in becoming more informed on the legal side of a possible wind farm.Inthe middle of a controversial sub ject, it’s never a bad idea to learn all the information you can before deciding on what to do with your land. We appreci ate the home office for sending a few representatives to come up and speak. ••• Our Ag Summer Reading Program was a hit this summer! We had about 50 kids participate between all the Carroll County libraries. If your child turned in the form, we will be getting their prizes to the libraries this week. This was our first summer doing the program, and we loved how many kids read their 10 ag books this summer. We hope that your kids also enjoyed read ing and learning more about agricul ture. There is a prize involved in finish ing, but we believe that what the kids learned is also a valuable takeaway. Another hit was the barn bookshelves that the Young Leaders made at the beginning of the summer. It was neat to see them filled with agriculture books, and we heard from multiple libraries that the kids loved them too and loved picking out books

This show is different than most tractor shows in the area because it has live demonstrations of older farm machinery and practices of years ago. Another addition this year came about after COVID-19 challenges. “During 2020, the congregation had been meeting outside under trees and on the lawn for worship when East Jordan congregants decided to build a pavilion,” Venhuizen said. “We had talked about adding an outdoor facility-covered room and open air sides for outdoor worship and other events. So we got together as a church in 2020 and built it. It is perfect for the Farm Heritage Festi val. Please check it out in August,” said Kevin Deets, building coordina tor.“The festival honors the Christian family farming history common in the Midwest. MILLEDGEVILLE – In 2019, the Milledgeville football team had an uncharacteristically bad season. After going undefeated in the NUIC Upstate a year prior to win its first conference championship since 2008, the Missiles reached the second round of the Class 1A playoffs and finished with a 10-1 record – but it fol lowed with an uninspiring 1-8 cam paign in 2019. The Missiles’ only win that year came in Week 6 – an 8-0 victory against Ashton-Franklin Center. In a COVID-19-altered 2020 season, Milledgeville began to right the ship, improving to 3-1. With a full season and switch to eight-man football in 2021, the Missiles continued their quick turnaround, rallying to a 9-2 record while reaching the second round of the playoffs. This spring, Milledgeville gradu ated 10 seniors, but it’ll look to carry on that success as it continues to adjust to eight-man football. “We definitely want to take another step, that’s our goal. To get better each week, go deep into play offs – that’s our hope – but we have a lot of new faces,” Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble said. “We have some young kids that are going to step up, graduated 10 last year, so we have some holes to fill, but I like where we’re at and how competitive we are. I think that goal of going a little deeper in the playoffs is attainable.” To maintain and build upon last year’s success, the Missiles will be counting on a number of new faces. Wroble expects the usual suspects – two-time defending eight-man state champion Polo, Amboy-LaMoille, Orangeville and Aquin – to provide tough competition in conference, but he’s also intrigued to see how his team stacks up against unfamiliar foes in the second half of the season. “We’ve got a tough schedule. I think we have seven schools that made the playoffs last year on our schedule, so coming from the NUIC to eight-man, in the NUIC you’ve got to be ready every week. Every week you’re playing a good football team,” Wroble said. With quite a few new starters com ing in, Nye and Ebersole aren’t totally sure what to expect this season.

Wroble also pointed to team speed as a strength for this year’s group. “I think we’re going to be a very fast team. We’re not going to be real big, but we’re going to be fast at almost every position,” he said. “On both sides of the ball, up front, we’re going to be pretty fast.” In 2022, Milledgeville has some new opponents to look forward to. In Week 3, it’ll travel to Decatur to face Decatur Lutheran/Mount Pulaski, then, in Week 6, it’ll host St. Thomas More in a nonconference tilt. Ebersole and Nye said they’re both excited for the change of pace. “We’re facing a lot of teams that we haven’t seen at all before, at least three teams we haven’t seen,” Ebersole said. “So it’ll be cool, but tough.” “Definitely tough. We haven’t faced a couple of those teams, and we’ve gotta travel a little further for some of those teams, but it will definitely be challenging,” Nye said. “And it’ll be fun seeing some new teams instead of the same old, same old teams.”

Milledgeville quarterback Connor Nye fires a pass during last year’s eight-man sec ond-round playoff game Nov. 6 against Amboy-LaMoille. Nye is one of three returning starters on offense for the Missiles.

The Missiles also will get a boost from the return of senior running back/corner back Kacen Johnson, who missed the end of last season with a broken leg. Senior center/defensive lineman Eric Ebersole is back as well to anchor both sides of the line. Senior wide receiver Bryce Aude is another returner, although he’s nurs ing a leg injury. Wroble hopes to get the senior wideout back on the field by midseason.Through the early days of summer camp, Nye has been adjusting to a new group of playmakers. He knows it won’t be easy to replace five starters from last year, but he has faith in the players coming up – and sees one potentially new advantage for his team this“It’sseason.going to be challenging. We had a lot of size that we lost, but we’re a very fast team, and hopefully our speed will be used more on the field instead of our size,” Nye said. We’ll just hope we can get the ball out to [our playmakers], and make them run.” Ebersole notes that it’s going to be a big change, but he believes the new guys will get up to speed quickly. “[Losing 10 seniors is] going to be a big deal. I don’t think any of us realize the difference they’re gonna make,” Ebersole said. “I think we’re going to get in-game, and you can put guys in their position, but I don’t know if we’re all going step in and fill in as good as some of the guys were. “This year, we don’t really have any big guys, so we can outsmart peo ple, work harder, but we don’t have size on our side. I’ve got confidence that we’ll get there. The team will put in work these last few summer days, and we’ll get good rest and practice and work Milledgevillehard.” has a smaller senior class this year, with several juniors and an even split of varsity and fro sh-soph players in the program. With a mix of youth and experience, the Mis siles hope to reload and match – or bet ter – their 9-2 record and second-round playoff appearance from a season ago. Wroble envisions the passing game as a primary strength this year. He also hopes to play a fast, fundamen tally sound and physical brand of defense.“Ithink, offensively, we’ll be able to throw the ball pretty well with Con nor. He played last year at quarter back and had a really good year,” Wroble said. “And he has some good receivers returning, so I think we’ll be able to move the ball through the air pretty good this year – and effectively. And on defense, we just want to play fast and tackle well and be physical. That’s our goal. We did that last year; we gotta do the same thing this year.”
