POLO – A Polo native and Channel SeedPro employee helped secure a $5,000 donation that will help feed residents who frequent a local food pantry.
Ellen Rahn presented the donation to Polo Lifeline & Self Help on Dec. 7.
Kathy Wragg, food pantry director, accepted the donation as the pantry buzzed with activity with clients filling grocery carts with food staples ahead of the holiday season.
“We have earmarked this donation for beef,” Wragg said. “We will be purchasing beef over the next few months.”
Rahn, who grew up in Polo, said the Channeling Good program made the donation possible.
“I think it is good to reinvest back into the community where you grew up,” Rahn said.
Since 2021, Channeling Good has been dedicated to giving back to organizations that enhance farmers’ lives and strengthen rural communities, the company said in a news release.
“The initiative first started as a way to serve the communities of Mt. Vernon and Lisbon, Iowa, who were affected by the devastating derecho storms that impacted Iowa in 2020. After seeing the impact of serving those communities, the Channel brand made the decision to expand the initiative to local communities across rural America. In the launch year of localizing this initiative, Channel has given $175,000 to organization across rural America,” the release said.
In April, Channel SeedPros nominated local nonprofits in their areas for a chance to receive a donation from
Channeling Good.
“Channel SeedPros across the country have directed donations to youth agriculture programs, emergency response organizations, schools, food banks and many more organizations that are dedicated to the success and preservation of rural America,” the release said.
Wragg said demand has been high at the pantry and the $5,000 donation comes at a crucial time.
“This is a very good thing,” Wragg said. “Our need is greater than ever. We are currently serving 120 families a month.
Polo church’s gift program for kids continues through Dec. 16
POLO – Community members can support area children in need by participating in the Christmas Star Project, which continues through Dec. 16.
The program, offered by Pine Creek Christian Church, is designed to help families in the Polo school district confidentially provide gifts for their children (ages infant through high school) during the holiday season.
The church has organized the program since 2007 and averages about 100 participants.

Channel Brand Manager Jenna Maltbie said the company is dedicated to serving the local community.
“At Channel, service has always been at the heart of everything we do,” Maltbie said in the release. “We are honored to partner with local nonprofit organizations across the country who are truly making a difference in their local communities. Our hope is that these funds can produce a lasting impact across rural America for years and generations to come.”

“We recommend a $40 limit per child for clothing, toys, books or nonelectronic games. No gift cards,” church member Sheryl Hopkins said. “Please have your gifts wrapped with children’s tags tied to them and returned to the bank and Senior Center by Monday, Dec. 16. We appreciate your help and support with this project. May it put many smiles on children’s faces on Christmas morning.” For more information, call 815-9463949 or 815-238-5200.

The week was a big one and it started Wednesday with our Polo Historical Society Christmas party. We all blew in with the wind and it was cold.
Many of our usual members were either sick or gone and my family came to help me with the slush punch. Krista said she heard several comment on how good it was – so refreshing and slushy.
It was Carol Hammer who made it first for the Polo Historical Society many years ago. My family dearly loves it. I think of her when I make it. We still had 25 there with lots of good food. Linda, who was not feeling well, sent her deviled eggs for the rest of us. Marian sent home cream puffs with me and I had been wanting to try those for a long time since I used to make them out in Eagle Point. Thank you, Marian, for those extra ones for me later.
City Hall had called me a week or two ago to pick up some very old

Christmas decorations Lauri Brimm had left for the Polo Historical Society. Lauri had lived in one of our historic homes and when she moved into it some antique ornaments had been left in the home. When she moved again, she felt the decorations – some very small bottle brush trees and glass ornaments – belonged in the museum.
I showed them to those at the party and told them we welcomed these very old antique ornaments used many years ago in a home in Polo. Thank you, Lauri.
Beth spoke on the application we are putting together and everyone was most interested. They continued to ask questions and when Beth said we now use different terminology, they wanted
to know what do we now say?
For the word abolitionists, we say conductors. For the word slaves, we now say freedom seekers. When you write a grant you need to use the correct terminology and this application is no different. Beth is very knowledgeable about the use of words. People that evening were most interested.
On Saturday, we were involved in Polo’s Christmas celebration. Several of us arrived early at the museum to get ready. Mike vacuumed the whole place and it really needed it. I cannot do that anymore. Thank you, thank you.
Mike and Beth discussed the trolley tour and we thank the people who own the trolley. We also were involved in the kids scavenger hunt and that was something nice that was added. It was great to see the kids with something to do.
We had two full trolleys and two partially filled. We showcased school-
houses and churches although not all of them. Kevin and I stayed behind at the museum and Bud Woodin handled Aplington House. We were busy and I even visited with some of my first graders of years ago. The years have gone by way too fast.
I even visited with my neighbors who have the beautiful Christmas decorations in their yard. I enjoy those each evening from my window. By four o’clock we were finished and I was exhausted. Thank you to the people who bought the blankets that Polo Economic Development is selling of historic places in Polo and schools. We were selling them at several places in Polo during the day.
It was a great day in Polo again as we get ready for the holidays. Christmas is coming fast!

This week I thought I’d share a few facts about Ogle County that I found in the 2012 Ogle County plat book.
Ogle is the 17th-largest county in Illinois. It is 21 miles north to south and 39 miles east to west. Ogle County has 24 townships totaling 757 square miles. About 7% is residential, 3% is parks and water, 3% roads and railways and 87% is agricultural land.
The average elevation in most of the county is between 700 feet to 900 feet above mean sea level. The highest level of 1,023 feet above mean sea level is on Hardpan Ridge, a ridge along Montague Road about two miles east of Baileyville.
The U.S. Census in 1840 (four years after Oregon was founded) was 3,479 settlers who called Ogle County home.
The 2010 Census for Ogle County showed 53,497 residents.
Just a reminder that in December 1839 the Ogle County Board ordered the town of Oregon to be called Florence.
The name Ogle was suggested by Gov. Thomas Ford from Oregon in memory of Capt. Joseph Ogle.

OREGON – An Ogle County judge sentenced a Rochelle man to four years of probation Dec. 4 with a strong warning to quit “living two lives,” remain sober and focus on his family.
Darnell A. Wilson, 38, received his sentence after pleading guilty to possessing methamphetamine with the intent to deliver and entering into a plea agreement with the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office with no agreed upon sentence.
The Dec. 4 sentencing hearing included a tearful plea from Wilson’s partner to not send him to prison, an admission from Wilson that possessing and using the drug was wrong and his apology to his family and the court.
“I know using drugs isn’t right,” Wilson said in a statement to Judge John “Ben” Roe. “Having it around the kids was wrong. I want to apologize to my kids, my lady and I apologize to the county of Ogle and you, judge. This type of negativity should never have happened.”
Wilson originally was charged in April with three counts of possessing cocaine with the intent to deliver in a drug-free zone; one count of possessing fentanyl with the intent to deliver; one count of possessing MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy; and possessing a firearm without a Firearm Owner’s Identification card. The charges followed an April 9 search of his apartment by Rochelle police and the Illinois State Police.
The drug-free zone cited in two of the counts was Connolly Park, a public park in Rochelle that Wilson lived
within 500 feet of when his apartment was searched.
Darnell A. Wilson
In June, charges against Wilson were amended to aggravated possession with the intent to deliver methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a gun without a FOID card.
All but the possession of 5 to 15 grams of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver was dismissed through the plea agreement.
Wilson’s partner testified that he was a good father to their children and watches them when she is working. She said he promised not to use illegal drugs again.
“If he was to be released, I don’t want anything in my house, around me or the kids,” she told the court tearfully. “To me, he’s the best father. I mean everybody makes mistakes. I know what he did was wrong and that not only hurt him, but the kids, too.”
She said the guns found during the search belonged to her and she had a valid FOID card.
“I don’t want the guns,” she said, telling Roe she would take the guns back to the store for a refund if Wilson were to be released back home. “I don’t agree with what he did. It’s been a struggle not only for me but for our kids, too.”
Assistant State’s Attorney Allison Huntley argued Wilson should be sen-

tenced to prison, citing his history of substance abuse and contact with the criminal justice system.
“He knew that what he was doing in his house was illegal and he did it anyway,” Huntley argued. “There were two school-age children in the house, impressionable ages, and this [illegal substances] are all over the house. It is appropriate to send him to the Department of Corrections. It was a dangerous situation for the children and the community.”
Wilson’s attorney, Glenn Jazwiec, disagreed, arguing Wilson took responsibility for his actions and was willing to face the consequences.
“People sometimes have to admit they have a problem and Mr. Wilson has accepted consequences for his act,” Jazwiec said, pointing to Wilson’s learning disorder, lack of education since the eighth grade and addiction as mitigating factors.
“He gets it that these actions have placed him here,” Jazweic said. “He had a job. He did not have to do this. Is this a screw up? Absolutely.”
Jazwiec said Wilson had never been convicted of a felony, had completed probation requirements for a previous misdemeanor and was considered a low risk if sentenced to probation. He also said Wilson had been participating with counseling and addiction programs while being held in the Ogle County jail for the past 240 days.
“Mr. Wilson understands what he did was wrong and he has already taken steps while in jail for his mental health and addition issues,” Jazwiec said. “He would like the opportunity to get a second chance to show the court he can be a better father.”
A sentence of probation would allow Wilson to continue to get treatment rather than being “warehoused” in prison, Jazwiec said.
“Mr. Wilson is a good person and deserves a chance to show he [can] complete probation,” Jazweic said.
Roe said he weighed all the arguments and elements in the case before rendering his decision.
“This is a tough case, Mr. Wilson,” Roe said. “People make very poor judgments when they use illegal substances. That’s why you are sitting here today.”
Roe said he had received letters from “a lot of people” in support of Wilson that included words such as “compassion, empathy, professionalism, reliable and respectable” to describe him. Some of the letters, Roe said, came from people who worked with Wilson.
“What I read here in those letters and what I hear today runs in conflict of the circumstances of this offense,” Roe told Wilson. “It appears to me that there are two different lifestyles going on. You were leading a law-abiding life.”
Roe said illegal substances, in this case methamphetamine, threatens a community and is a highly addictive drug.
“I realize there is a difference of getting counseling when you are in custody and when you are not in custody,” Roe said. “What you were doing was destroying lives. You were using and your choices were not right. Dealing methamphetamine destroys peoples’ lives in many ways.

OREGON – An Indiana man accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl pleaded not guilty Dec. 4 to predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Casper W. Jennings, 34, of South Bend, Indiana, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Dec. 4 and entered the not guilty pleas when he appeared in court with his attorney, Ogle County Public Defender Kathleen Isley.
Jennings, who has been held in the Ogle County jail since his Nov. 23 arrest, is charged with five counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, Class X felonies, and one count of

aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony. He is accused of committing sex acts with the girl between June and November.
Isley told Ogle County Judge Anthony Peska that Jennings – dressed in the orange jumpsuit issued to prisoners and wearing handcuffs and shackles –had agreed to waive his right to a preliminary hearing and was pleading not guilty to all charges.

here, too. I’m going to give you the chance to be a father for your kids. I’m going to give you the opportunity to prove to this court that you can serve the community.”
Conditions of Wilson’s sentence include 300 hours of public service work, random drug testings, DNA testing and cooperating with any psycho-
tors present evidence at the hearing, but defense attorneys can cross-examine witnesses.
Asked by Peska if he wanted to waive his right to a preliminary hearing and plead not guilty, Jennings replied, “Yes.”
Isley entered a demand for a jury trial, a common practice by defense attorneys after preliminary hearings.
She requested Jennings’ next hearing date be set for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 19. Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten agreed to that date.
Dec. 4 marked the third court appearance for Jennings since his arrest by Rochelle police.
After a Nov. 26 detention hearing, Peska denied Jennings’ request to be released from custody as his case proceeds through the court system.
logical or substance abuse assessments and treatments recommended by the probation department. A sentence of 180 days in jail was completed because Wilson had been held at the Ogle County jail since his arrest.
Roe also ordered Wilson to report to him, in person, with a probation department representative in 90 days
In court documents, Peska ruled that Jennings should not be released because of the “nature and circumstances” and “regularity” of the alleged offenses. He also cited Jennings’ job in the trucking industry and “reported ongoing sexual assault” of the girl while in a “position of trust and authority” as additional reasons to deny his release.
Rochelle police arrested Jennings after an investigation in cooperation with Shining Star Children’s Advocacy Center in Dixon, an agency that investigates allegations of physical or sexual abuse.
Jennings faces up to 60 years in prison under special sentencing if convicted of the Class X felonies. A Class 2 felony is punishable by three to seven years in prison.
for a review. That hearing is at 1:30 p.m. March 12.
“You are 240 days clean and there should be no reason you ever go back,” Roe said. “You leave here today with a clear head. I don’t want to sit back and wonder what’s going on with your case, so I want you back here for a review to see how you are doing.”
Born: May 13, 1943
Died: November 21, 2024
It is with great sorrow that the family of Denis David Anderson, 81, of Loves Park shares that he passed away at his home on Thursday, November 21, 2024, following a brief but valiant battle with cancer.
Denis was born May 13, 1943, in San Antonio, TX, the son of Walter C. and Alice Genniel (Carpenter) Anderson. Following his father’s stint in the Army Air Corps at Kelly Field, the young family returned home to northern Illinois, eventually settling on the family farm just west of Oregon, IL. Denis grew up on the farm. He was a voracious reader, pushed himself in academics, and explored fine arts, culture, and classical music and jazz as opportunities presented themselves. He attended Oregon schools, and graduated as Salutatorian of Oregon Community High School Class of 1961. He then went on to the University of Illinois for both undergraduate and graduate work, attaining his degree as Doctor of Dental Surgery.
Born: March 8, 1933
Died: December 10, 2024
MT. MORRIS, IL – Gerald “Jerry” D. Knodle, age 91, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at KSB Hospital in Dixon, IL.
Jerry was born on March 8, 1933 in Rockford, IL, the son of Harold M. & Mamie P. (Henderson) Knodle. He graduated from Mt. Morris High School class of 1951. Jerry received his BS degree from Northern Illinois University. He served in the US Navy from 1952 to 1956.
Jerry married Anne Belrose on June 14, 1959 in First Methodist Church, Aurora, IL. Jerry worked in public relations for Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Illinois for 16 years, and he also worked for Lederle Laboratories and Rockford Anesthesiology. He was the past Master and Secretary for the Samuel H. Davis Masonic Lodge for 50 years, and a American Legion member. He was a village trustee, served on board of the Mt. Morris Fire and Ambulance, and was presently serving on the Mt. Morris Library Board. He was a member
Denis’s lifetime of service began soon after. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant, and also held the rank of sergeant when assigned to Marine battalions. He was stationed at Coronado Naval Base; San Diego, CA; Camp Hanson, Kin, Okinawa; and a remote Marine Camp in Japan during the Vietnam conflict, serving as a dentist. He continued to serve in the Reserves for several years thereafter.
After his time in the Navy, Denis returned to Northern Illinois to join Dr. Wilson at his dental practice in Rochelle, IL before opening his own dental practice. During the years he practiced dentistry, he forged a dedicated and talented team of hygienists, dental assistants, and office staff who became a close “work family” with Denis, serving patients in Rochelle and the surrounding region over the decades. The team began with Jill Shaneberg, who came aboard just weeks after the “young new dentist” arrived in town, and Jill continued as a valued leader on the office team for decades. Dr. Anderson and his staff were held in high regard for their care and professionalism.
Denis continued to study to increase his understanding of best practice and excellence in the art of dentistry, attending continuing education at The Pankey Institute for the duration of his career. He also was a member and former president of the Winnebago Coun-
of the Mt. Morris Disciples United Methodist Church, where he held many positions of leadership and was a long time member of the choir. He loved gardening, traveling, and spending time with family.
He loved his Wednesday coffee at the Senior Center. He was a Chicago sports fan through and through.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Anne, of Mt. Morris, IL; children, Kris (John) Mueller of Stillman Valley, IL, Jeff Knodle of Hoffman Estates, IL, and Kara (Rodd) Rosenthal, of Colgate, WI; 9 grandchildren, Jeremy (Jodi) Mueller, Shaun (Laura) Mueller, Robert Mueller, Andy Knodle, Justin Knodle, Stephen Knodle, Amy Knodle, Stuart Rosenthal, and Emma Rosenthal; 4 great-grandchildren, Trevor, Carter, Rowan, and Silas Mueller; sister-in-law, Darlene Knodle; cousins, and several nieces and nephews.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard D. Knodle; and granddaughter, Jennifer Mueller.

ty Dental Society. He retired after serving his patients and community after 45 years.
His two sons, Stephen Andrew Anderson and Nicholas David Anderson, were born during the first few years after Denis moved to Rochelle. Denis exhibited a great deal of courage and fortitude, leaning on his faith, when he experienced the great tragedy of the death of his younger son, Nicholas, who succumbed to cystic fibrosis at the age of 15 months in July, 1978.
Denis found great joy and a lifetime of happiness when he met and married his true love, Barbara Hurtte LaFayette. They wed on August 5, 1994, and enjoyed a wonderful life, blending their families together. They celebrated their 30th anniversary in August of 2024.

She enjoyed serving as a leader for both her boys and daughter for many years. She was also an active member of the Illinois extension unit of Lake County and Gurnee Women’s club where she served as president and secretary. As her children grew she became employed at J.C. The furor over private school domination in the IHSA football championships has yet to die down. If anything, it’s become more pronounced, even gaining national attention.
Even the sports section of the USA Today newspaper featured an article on the subject. This ain’t dying down folks.
Fortunately for all parties, I have a simple solution that addresses the disparity. Details to follow later in this column.
Before that, let’s analyze how we got to this juncture, a 283-76 scoring advantage by the privates in the six championship games against publics. None of the games were closer than three touchdowns. Talk about yawners.
Private schools always have been a factor in the 50-year history of the playoffs. Ironically, Catholic schools had a far greater enrollment in the past than they do now.
With fewer schools and less kids, why have they become more dominant in football the past decade or so?
Could it be that the priorities of parents have dramatically shifted to being more focused on athletic success for the children?
It used to be that parents were content with a quality Christian education, of which Catholic schools are noted for. If the school had a good football team, that was an added plus, but not necessarily the sole reason for attending said school.
Be it football, basketball, volleyball, etc., parents nowadays have become more concerned with that part of the experience than the educational component. If you have a kid that is a burgeoning talent, the temptation is to send him to a football factory such as Nazareth, Montini, Joliet Catholic, Mount Carmel or Loyola.
This is a nationwide trend and before we cast blame on the Catholic schools, let’s examine what is taking place in the rest of the country.
While covering the football game
IDNR releases number of deer taken in first firearm season
SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois harvested 54,661 deer during the first weekend of the Illinois firearm deer season from Nov. 22 to 24, the Illinois Department of Conservation said in a news release.
Comparatively, hunters killed 53,348 and 52,354 deer during the first firearm weekends in 2023 and 2022, respectively. Totals from area counties were Bureau with 628, Carroll with 387, Jo Daviess with 936, Lee with 424, Ogle with 418,

between Northern Illinois and Central Michigan recently, I asked a press person from Michigan what it is like there. In a somewhat opposite scenario, he said public schools offer a liberal form of open enrollment.
In effect, it gives certain public schools a competitive advantage against other publics and privates. He felt it was detrimental to the sports scene as prospective athletes are more apt to take their talent to better schools – a case of the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer.
Other than Illinois, the state I am most familiar with is Utah. The primary religion is Mormon, but there is no such thing as a Mormon high school.
All the kids go to public schools. That balances the slate substantially, especially with all the athleticism among Mormon football players of Polynesian descent.
Getting back to Illinois, it is important to understand the inner workings of the IHSA relative to a citizen uprising over the public-private controversy.
First of all, the organization is not a public taxing body. A few years ago, some of the knuckleheads in Illinois state government thought they had authority over the IHSA and tried to meddle in their affairs.
Fortunately, the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of the IHSA and told the politicos to mind their own business.
Any changes in IHSA policy must come from its member schools alone. It’s entirely possible that administrators from the 800 high schools aren’t up in arms about the football debate like us gridiron meatballs.
I noticed an online petition protest-
ing the private school competitive advantage. Nice grassroots effort but this isn’t about effecting change in local government.
The IHSA doesn’t care about what the public thinks as much as what their school principals have to say. Bottom line, the IHSA manages its own affairs without outside interference and strives to do the best possible job in appeasing all of its schools. It’s an unenviable task and those staffers have my sympathies.
I also believe they do not want to separate the privates and publics as that would create disunity.
However, things have gotten out of hand and it is time for a radical move.
Hence my simple solution:
Since the Catholic schools brag about how tough their league is, let them have their own ultra-competitive state tournament among themselves (only 10% of all football-playing schools in the state).
So we don’t have Mount Carmel beating up on Sterling Newman, break it into three enrollment divisions. With 16-team brackets, it would finish the weekend before Thanksgiving, the same time as 8-man football does.
The traditional Thanksgiving weekend still would be reserved for public
schools with 32-team brackets and the same eight classes. With the privates gone, it would allow for more teams to make the final 256-school cut.
A downfall is two weekends to complete all the title games, but the IHSA has plenty of experience in that from multiple weekends of the boys and girls state basketball tournaments.
Definitely keep the public title games at Illinois State University, but consideration may be given to moving the privates to a smaller venue closer to Chicago where many of their schools are based. The reason for a smaller site is that private school fan bases are usually less than what is found in public schools.
With only three private championship games, they all could be played on Saturday, eliminating the need to miss school on Friday.
Yes, I am contradicting myself in that the IHSA does not consider input from outsiders. But as a columnist, I would be neglecting my duties if I did not try to offer a solution to what ails Illinois high school football championships.
