Wehadabeautifulautumnweekend hereinPineCreek.Itwaswonderfultobe outandseealltheleavesonthetrees.The fieldsarebeingclearedquickly.Forthe harvestandthesafetyofourfarmers,we giveourthanks.

Thismorninginchurch,wewere greetedbytheRockwoodfamily.Pastor SuzanneHallStoutisoffforthenextcoupleofweeks.Inherabsence,wewelcomed BillNewkirkandhisfamilyfromtheOgle CountychapterofGideonsInternational.

Thereweremanyofushelpingwiththe servicetoday.JamesHopkins,Sandra FordandItookpart intheservice.Next week,wewillbe inpersononly.Our servicewillreturntoFacebookLiveinacoupleofweeks.

JamesandNancyHopkinswerehoststo theirdaughter,AmyYoder,herhusband, Jon,andhisson,Nolan,whowerevisiting fromIndiana.Itwasgreattocatchupwith Amyafterchurch.Iwasespeciallyhappy toshareteachingstorieswithher.

Today,LyleandSherylHopkinsvisited withtheirfriends,DaveandCarol Bateman.TheyattendedtheserviceatSt. John’sChurchofChristinHarmony.After church,theyhadbrunchinGenoa.Mostly,

theyhadalovelyvisitwiththeirfriends andenjoyedthebeautifuldrive.

OnSaturday,ourdecoratingcommittee metatthechurchforamorningproject. SandraFord,DebOhlwine,KatiePfundsteinandherdaughtersandIworkeduntil theearlyafternoon.Itwasnotallwork sinceweenjoyedthefellowship,too.

ThispastTuesdaynight,IwasSuzanne’s guestfortheChamberofCommerce annualdinner.Wehadthepleasureofsitting withJoeyKochsmeierandhiswife, Whitney.JoeyattendedSundaySchoolat PineCreekwhen hewasyoung. Weloved gettingtoknowhimthere.

Already,wehavefinishedthefirstquarterofschool.Thedaysseemtogobysofast andthereareneverenoughhoursinthe day.Icontinuetolookforwardtospending timewithstudentsastheycontinueto grow.

Thispastweek,Idecideditwastimefor ahairrefresh.Imadeanappointmentwith LisaPattoninPolo.Wehaveknowneach othersincewewereyoungchildren.Fora while,hermom wouldwatchmybrother andIinthemorningsbeforeschool.

Whilesheworked,wehadagreatconversation,rememberingtheolddaysand catchinguponlivesnow.Sherecently movedbackhereafterlivingseveralyears

awayfromPolo.Ilefthershopfeelingrejuvenated.

Duringourconversation,Itoldherhow mymomwouldsendmetogetmyhair doneasacureforanybadnews.

WhenIwasrecoveringfromfootsurgery,shepackedmeintohercarsoIcould feelbetteratahairsalon.Itdoeswork,but onlyuntilthenexthaircut.

ThereisatruerefreshinhavingarelationshipwithJesus.WithHim, we are madecleanoverandover.

IfweventuretoofarawayfromHim,we canalwayscomebacktoHim.Whenwe facebadnews,wearerefreshedbyour hopeinJesus.

Asweface eachday,wecanbefilled withacleanheart.Hisloveistoomuchfor ustokeepforourselves.WeshareHislove withthosearounduswhichrefreshesus onceagain.Hislovecontinuestofillusand makeusnew.

Ihopetoseeyounextweekatourlittle churchinthecountry.Wewillhave anotherguestspeakernextweek.Joinus foratimeoffellowship,loveandworship. Wegladlywelcomeyouandyourfamily.

Village of Progress recognizes attendees, volunteers during awards banquet

TheVillage,whichopenedin1969, servesadultswith developmentaldisabilitiesinOgleCountyandprovides “respect,avoiceandapurpose”to thosewhoattend.

“Asaresultoftheongoingvolunteerandfinancialsupportofindividuals,organizations,businessesand industriesthroughout, andbeyond, ourOgleCountyboundaries,wehave beensuccessfulinmaintainingalevel ofexcellencethatisrecognized throughout thearea,”saidTomWadsworth,thelongtimeemceeoftheVillage’sannualbanquet.

Thisyear’seventwasheld atSt. Mary’sParishCenterinOregonon Oct.19.Awardwinnersreceived a plaqueandmedalengravedwiththe date,nameoftheawardandnameof therecipient.

NoraWojtalewicz,ofDavis Junction,waspresentedtheJohnHerrmannPersonalAchievementAward.

15th of Illinois took three days to travel to Vicksburg

In1819thetownofVicksburg cameinto beingbyRev.Newt Vick.Theviewfromthebluffs wasmagnificentwithhillsandthe MississippiRiver.FollowingNative Americansarrivingincanoes came frontiersmeninflatboatsandsteamshipsreadytobeinvolvedinmakinga newcommunity.

In1863cametheCivilWar,which leftVicksburgbadlydamagedafter47 daysofbattleduringthistumultuous time.

Attheendofthewarthecitygot busyandrebuiltherselfwithwonderfuloldbuildingssuchasWalnutHills. Thishadbeenahomebuiltin1880by GeorgeRogers,butnottheGeorge Rogerswhohadbeenpartofthe15th Regiment.

BruceandIenjoyedeatinginthis homenowturnedintoasouthern restaurantwithwonderfulcuisine.

We enjoyedthesouthernhospitalityandtheyevenletuslookaround therestofthebuilding.

Thenextmorningweheaded back totheVicksburgNationalMilitary Park andtheU.S.S.CairoMuseum. Thismuseumhasondisplayoneofthe sevenironcladsthatwereusedinthe CivilWar.

Thisone,the Cairo,wasfound yearslaterin1956intheYazooRiver andbroughtupin1964.Ithadbeen protectedall theseyearsbytheriver bed.Itwasmostinterestingtobeable towalkarounditandgetafeelofwhat itmusthavebeenlikesincemuchof theoriginalityisstillthere.

Itwasherethatweleftthetravels ofthe15th.TheyheadedontoJackson andNatchez,Mississippi.They had morebattlestofightwithsometaken asprisoners,andsomeevenmarched withShermantothesea.Somevery fortunateoneswentthroughthewhole CivilWarandcamehomeinfairly goodshape.

RichardofDeKalbwouldeventuallycomehomebuthehadtrouble sleepingthinkingofothersnotever cominghome.Hisbrotherlosthislife andanotherbrotherendedupinthe southafterbeingaprisonerofwar.

Richardhadbeensicktowardtheend ofthewarandspenthistimeatthe hospitalshelping outthere.Richard’s mindwouldforeverbehauntedat whathesaw.

Ourmindstodayfounditdifficultto graspthewholething.Afterwehad finishedwiththeU.S.S.CairoMuseum weheadedupnorthtoCapeGirardeau tovisitfamilyandfriends.Bruce’s phonetellsushowfarwehavetogo andwhenwewillgetthere.Itisabsolutelycorrectbecausewepulledinto thedrivewayofagoodfriendatthe exacttimeitgaveus.

Iwantedtosayhellotoagoodfriend andtakehimsomespecialcookies. SeveralyearsagowhenCharlie’sin Polohad an open house they made someunusualcookies calledpillow mints.

Theyhadtherecipeonthetable andIpickedoneup.Ittakes49Andes Mintsinrowsofsevenacrossand sevendownoncookiedough14inches by9inches.Onasheetofwaxpaper youhaverolledoutanotherrectangle ofcookiedoughofthesamemeasurement.

Placingthemintsisnoproblembut flippingthesecondsheetofdoughover ontopoftheotherisaworkofart.The cookiesaredeliciousandmybrother Davelovesthem.SoIhadcookiesfor

WhileservingasOregon’slibrarian shewasinvolvedinseveralimportant localactivities.ShecompiledandsubmittedaninterestingstoryofStrongholdfor theSesquicentennialStoryof Oregon,Illinois,(1836-1986).

ShewassecretaryofthePrairie PreservationSocietyofOgleCounty andtheeditoroftheArtsAlliance Organization.Whenshediedatage71, memorialsinhernameforthePrairie PreservationSocietywererequested.

It’sthemaintenancetheyneedhelpwith,andthecost dedicatedtothat–about $6,400 annually–issparkingdiscussion,saidOltmanns, whoisamemberoftheCounty Facilities,CountySecurityandITCommittee.

“Ithink,inaperfectworld,theoutcomeissomeintergovernmentalagreements,butmaybeavolunteergroup that’sorganizedaswellthatcanhelpusout,outthere,”he said.“TheBoyScoutsaregreat;theydoalotofEagleScout projectsoutthere.”
