The storms from last week left behind some damaged trees and power lines, and brought rain we so desperately needed. God cares for us in the storms. He meets our needs. For God’s constant care and love, we give our thanks.

This morning in church, our church family was greeted by Sandra Ford with a little help from Fiona and her cousin, Claire. Fiona and Claire spent the night with their grandma, Deb Ohlwine.

In Pastor Suzanne Hall-Stout’s absence, Pastor Carol Soderholm shared her message for the morning. We were especially glad to have new visitors. James Hopkins served as the layleader for the worship service.

James also shared a children’s message for our youngest friends, Amelia, Fiona, Claire and Hunter. Our pianist, Mary Mead-Cantrell, provided the music for the morning. Next Sunday we will be in person and live on our Facebook page.

Don and Vicki Hay have returned from a trip to Nashville, Tennessee, to attend the biennial Satterlee family reunion. The Hays enjoyed catching up with family members during the events.

Each day of the General Assembly has been filled with joy. On Saturday morning, I was greeted with lots of smiles in the elevator as we were all heading to the same meetings and were ready to share our love of God.

Museum staff busy prepping for tour groups

We are taking advantage of summer help at the museum as we get ready for tour groups.

School is just around the corner as we continue to empty a few boxes stacked here and there. For example, at Aplington House I said to Lily, “What is in the box under the rope bed?” When she pulled it out, it was full of books we did after our sesquicentennial.

We would never have remembered that we stored a box of books under the bed, so those extra books need to come down to the museum to be placed with the others. All those things in hidden places need to be taken care of, checked on and placed in full view.

The pictures Jesse Schryver had taken are now out of the box and have been placed in acid free sleeves in albums along with all the Tri-County Press articles. The timeline of his life also is there and everything is labeled. We also went through the last box of Muench family pictures. It was good to

POLO HISTORY

have those boxes taken care of and not tucked away in a corner.

People are visiting the museum in full swing and it is nice to be able to show people what we have accomplished. Ted came in and hung the John Brindle arrowhead collection and a clock put together by Dale Blough using arrowheads. Very clever and it makes a nice grouping along with a picture Ned Parrett painted for Joe Bleistein of a Native American on a horse.

Not everything fits nicely in a display case and someone said, “Hang them on the wall.” That was a great idea.

The Polo Senior Center came in for a tour and most of them had never

been in the museum. They were pleasantly surprised at all the history of Polo on display. They had the ice cream truck outside ready for a treat and we all enjoyed that thanks to the senior center.

Other people recently stopped by the museum to say hello and see what we are working on. Linda had been Zooming with a museum group in the state of Oregon. Little did we know that one of those individuals would be traveling to Pennsylvania and he stopped by to see the Polo museum. He had someone in his family who was a bearded lady in a carnival in Indiana so he was attempting to find information on her. It’s amazing what people are trying to find.

We have two boxes of Barber family history. Steve Barber brought them to Joan Raley for us to look through and examine the history of the Barber family.

I always thought that someday the

Barbers would come back for their family history. But it seems they are leaving the boxes in Polo under our care, so we need to label what they are since one does forget.

Under a card table at Aplington House was a bag filled with beautiful old handkerchiefs. Some we already had at the museum, some came from the Muench family and many of them were made by my grandmother.

I had put them all together and made a program. I pulled out the bag and gave it to Linda to examine. It recently came to church, where more people looked at those lovely creations. Remember the old saying, “One for show and one for blow?”

These were definitely for show. Now we need to figure out how to display them. It is never-ending!

Four Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Ogle County

Bonnie Hendrickson supplied a book for the Military Room at the Oregon Depot. The publication was a 1976 bicentennial project of the American Revolution. The bicentennial dated from the Declaration of Independence (1776).

I was surprised to learn it listed 1,053 soldiers buried in 89 of Illinois’ 103 counties. Illinois was founded in 1818, 42 years after the Declaration of Independence.

The fighting started April 19, 1775. The Declaration of Independence was signed July 4, 1776. The war officially ended in 1783.

The first 271 pages list the soldiers’ names, date of birth, birthplace and date of death with cemetery names and location. It also lists where they lived after the war and how they made their long journey to Illinois.

Following that section is a list of what counties have the burial sites for these soldiers. Four Revolutionary War soldiers are listed as being buried in Ogle County. They are Daniel B. Day, Mason Hatch, Rufus Perkins and Rufus B. Phelps.

Day is buried at the Daysville Cemetery, a short distance south of Daysville on Daysville Road. He was born in 1863 in Keene, New Hampshire. He died at the age of 65. He served two years after the Declaration of Independence was signed and received a government pension.

Phelps was born in 1767 in New York and died in 1839 in Holcomb, Illinois. He is buried at the Lindenwood Cemetery in Lindenwood. His grave was marked by the Rockford Chapter DAR on June 19, 1909. Phelps was wounded in the war and discharged, receiving a soldier’s bounty.

Perkins was born about 1763 in Bridgeport, Massachusetts, and died Jan. 20, 1848. He is buried with a government headstone at the Buffalo Grove Cemetery in Polo. After the war, he lived in New York before coming to Illinois in 1847.

Hatch is listed as probably being buried in Ogle County.

His residence was listed as Oregon. He was born Aug. 23, 1762, in Tolland County, Connecticut, and

died March 1813 at age 50.

It is possible he was buried at Bethel Cemetery located west of Kings. A Revolutionary War sign and his tombstone are located there, but there is no official record of his death or burial site at the cemetery.

• Otto Dick is a retired teacher and has researched Ogle County history for several years.

CMAAA offering 3 educational programs this month

OREGON – The Coliseum Museum of Art, Antiques & Americana will present three educational programs this month at the new museum in downtown Oregon.

Retired Illinois State Police Special Agent Bethe Hughes will present a workshop on forensic art from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 12. The workshop will cover what forensic art really involves including drawings of criminal suspects based on victim and witness testi-

mony, examining remains and creating sketches of what a victim may have looked like, sketching victims or suspects based on surveillance footage and photographs, creating age progressions to help identify missing people or suspects based on how they might look today and two- and three-dimensional reconstructions of crime scenes or evidence such as with clay sculpting.

Oil painter Beverly Garcia of Dixon will present a live art demonstration at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19.

“Beverly didn’t start out wanting to be an artist and at 50 she started to study and paint with other artists and eventually began winning ribbons at art shows, exhibiting in galleries and selling her work,”

CMAAA Director Michael Glenn said in a news release. “She paints primarily in oil but has also worked with pastels covering a wide array of subjects including landscapes, still life, portraits, animals and flowers. Beverly’s work is also on display in the Lowden Gallery until Aug. 31.”

Roni Golan will present The Sorcery of Artistry from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and 29 and Sept. 5.

“This is a three-part series designed to awaken your creative magic and enchant your summer,” Glenn said. “Roni is a professional artist of over 35 years who owns and operates his art gallery The Underground, located in Rockford. The workshop is a program created in partnership with Serenity Hospice and Home and the Rockford Area Arts Council.”

The CMAAA’s mission is to present art, antiques, Americana and history through permanent and rotating exhibits, workshops, music, theater and more. For information, visit cmaaa.org and facebook.com/ColiseumMuseum.

Heat, storms, family fun all part of Lee County Fair

AMBOY – Anyone who has volunteered to help run a county fair knows how much effort, dedication and luck it takes to pull off a successful event.

The 2023 Lee County Fair, held July 27-30, had all that and more after Mother Nature tossed extreme heat and humidity and then storms at the fairgrounds on Franklin Grove Road, 13 miles southeast of Dixon.

“We were able to control what we could and then handled what we couldn’t control very well,” Katie Drew, Lee County Fair Association secretary, said Monday morning.

What the fair board could not control was the weather – heat indexes of 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday, followed by strong storms Friday night.

Those storms knocked out electrical service to the fairgrounds, meaning water needed for 4-H livestock entries could not be pumped from the well without generators.

But after a post on social media, that problem soon was solved.

“I arrived at the fairgrounds at around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday,” said Drew, of Dixon. “We knew we lost power Friday night, but we had hoped it would be back on at some point by Saturday morning, but it wasn’t. Our first concern was to get our well back up and running for livestock so we asked for water tanks to have water hauled in or for generators.”

Within 45 minutes of putting the plea out on social media, the fair community responded in earnest.

“We had generators showing up and some very large ones could run the well pump so within a couple of hours we had water again,” Drew said.

Other generators were used to power exhibit buildings so judging of 4-H categories could continue. Some 4-Hers even offered their smaller, gas

powered generators to help the cause.

“We even had little kids asking if we needed their generators,” Drew said. “For me, that was very heartwarming, them wanting to help if they could. They told us they were not using their generators to power their fans any longer because it was cooler. It was very nice of them to offer.”

Power was restored Saturday afternoon and the fair’s final two days continued under much milder temperatures.

Attendance numbers are difficult to calculate, Drew said, but the fair usually averages between 5,000 and 7,000 visitors.

“It was very hot for the first two days so people stayed home, but it was a lot cooler for Saturday and Sunday and we were pleased with the turnout for those days,” Drew said. “We had a good crowds those days with lots of families attending.”

Saturday’s T and A Bucking Bulls rodeo, out of Missouri, brought in many spectators for bull riding,

bronco riding, barrel racing and the “Mutton Busters,” where kids tried to ride sheep.

“We filled the grandstands for the rodeo and it really helped when the weather turned,” Drew said.

Drew is one of many volunteers who plan the event throughout the

year and then make the fairgrounds their second home during “fair week.”

“We have a lot of great volunteers who show up and turn out when we need them,” Drew said. “I can’t say enough about our volunteers. We’ve already started planning for 2024 and we always need more volunteers.”

Dixon man arrested after attacking, injuring deputies: sheriff

Former Dixon prison officer has PTSD, had a ‘dissociative break,’ his attorney says

OREGON – Bond was reduced Monday for a 46-year-old Dixon man who the Ogle County sheriff said attacked three deputies, breaking some bones, and who had to be subdued with a stun gun.

Jamin M. Soria, until recently a corrections officer at Dixon Correctional Center, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery to an officer causing great bodily harm, four counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, trespass to a residence and misdemeanor domestic battery.

“I do have a deputy that’s going to be out for at least eight weeks,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

That deputy has a broken knee and

a broken hand after Soria “repeatedly leg-locked, grabbed and wrestled” with him and shoved or grabbed the other two, according to the charging document.

One has a strained knee, VanVickle said.

Battery causing great bodily harm is punishable by four to 15 years in prison; the other battery charges carry three to seven years each.

According to a news release from VanVickle, the deputies responded about 11:20 a.m. July 22 to the 2600 block of South Galena Trail Road in rural Polo for a report of an unwanted person, who turned out to be Soria.

They told him he needed to leave or be arrested for trespassing and he attacked them, according to the release.

Soria was stunned twice and eventually subdued. He and the deputies were treated at KSB Hospital in Dixon, Soria for minor injuries, according to the release and to testimony Monday in Ogle County Court.

Bond originally was set at $150,000, but Soria’s attorney, Eric Arnquist of Rochelle, argued for a lower bond and Judge Anthony Peska reduced it to $100,000, which means Soria must post $10,000 to be released.

Soria, who has no criminal history, told Peska that he was a corrections officer for the Illinois Department of Corrections at Dixon prison before leaving

that position in February and that he has post traumatic stress disorder in part as a result of his job.

He also said in court that he was a victim of sex abuse as a child and that he was assigned to the prison’s “X House,” which houses inmates with psychiatric disorders.

He lost medical insurance when his job ended.

“I left because I didn’t think I could do the job any longer,” he said, noting he was on disability before his insurance was terminated.

He said he would be willing to undergo treatment and was seeking a second opinion from a physician when his insurance ended.

“I’ve had no income since March,” he told Peska.

In arguing for the bond reduction, Arnquist said Soria has “serious mental health issues” and needs treatment.

“I am not going to minimize the seriousness of these charges, but it could have been much worse,” Arnquist said. “He needs mental health treatment in part due to the sexual assault and his work as a prison officer. He’s not a danger to the community. He had a dissociative break related to his job as a prison guard. He has no criminal background.”

Soria has lived in either Ogle or Lee counties his entire life and is not a flight risk, Arnquist said.

As a precaution, Soria’s mother already gave his firearms, including shotguns and an AR-15, to Dixon police, Arnquist said.

In arguing against the reduction, Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten said Soria was released from KSB last week and when he was asked by other court-related officials whether he was on any medication for his mental health, he gave conflicting information.

Soria told the deputies he fought with that he had “multiple identities,” the prosecutor said.

Leisten also said Soria was a trained mixed martial arts fighter who used leg locks during the fight, breaking the officer’s hand and knee after a stun gun was used on him.

“He is an extremely dangerous person due to his training and because of having a possible psychotic episode,” Leisten said. “He clearly cannot live on his own and it is unclear if he is on any medications.”

Soria scored as a “low risk” on the bond assessment, the judge said, but he disagreed with Arnquist’s assertion that he was not dangerous.

“You say there is no public risk, but I think there are probably three officers that disagree,” Peska said. “He has had an abrupt change. ... These are extremely serious charges.”

Soria is scheduled to appear in court again at 10 a.m. Aug. 16.

Teacher charged in Ogle County with child sexual abuse

Morrison

OREGON – A Morrison man who is a science teacher at Clinton (Iowa) High School has been accused of sexually abusing a boy in rural Oregon in 2004, when the man was involved

with the Boy Scouts, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said.

Jason L. Endress, 44, was arrested July 25 and appeared in court July 28 on charges of criminal sexual assault and aggravated

criminal sexual abuse.

Court records indicate the boy was between 13 and 17 years of age at the time of the alleged offenses on May 24 and Sept. 6 of 2004.

The investigation began after the Boy Scouts organization contacted the sheriff’s department, Rock said. Illinois State Police assisted in the investigation.

Endress’ bond was set at $100,000.

Endress, who according to online

records has no criminal history in Iowa or the Sauk Valley, has been a teacher with the Clinton school district for 22 years.

Superintendent Gary DeLacy was told of the arrest July 25, but was not given any details, he said in a July 26 phone call.

The district will conduct its own investigation before deciding what Endress’ teaching status will be moving forward, DeLacy said.

2023 PREP FOOTBALL: FORRESTON CARDINALS

Forreston looks to ‘keep the train moving’

New group of Cardinals ready to carry on tradition

Another year, another group of Forreston Cardinals ready to step up and fulfill the high expectations that come with the territory of two decades of success.

Last year’s run to the Class 1A semifinals was the seventh trip that deep in the playoffs in the past 11 years they’ve been held and the 12th straight postseason berth for the Cardinals. They had qualified for the playoffs 22 of the past 25 seasons and have had only one sub-.500 record since 1997.

It’s a lot to live up to, but it seems like Forreston is up to the task year in and year out.

“It feels great to be the next group up,” senior running back Kaleb Sanders said. “The only thing is it’s just a lot of pressure to keep everything going. But we love that challenge.”

“It’s kind of a lot of pressure because we’ve had so many good years,” senior lineman Ethan Bocker said. “But most of us have been in the program long enough to understand it and just be competitive about it. We want to carry on that tradition.”

The key to such a long stretch of success has been a stable system. Ever since Greg Wood came in as head coach in 1997, the Cardinals have been a perennial playoff contender. When Denny Diduch took over in 2008, he helped Forreston take the next step, winning 1A state titles in 2014 and 2016. Kyle Zick stepped in and added a third title in 2018.

Now, Keynon Janicke enters his third season at the Cardinals’ helm. A player under Diduch, he has followed in Zick’s footsteps of keeping things the same since Diduch took the program to the promised land.

“What’s really cool about Forreston is just the tradition that Coach Diduch started when I was in school,” Janicke said, “and now being the head coach, it’s just really cool to see that we’re still reaping the benefits of that.”

Every year, opponents know what they’re going to get when they face Forreston: a dynamic rushing attack with a physical fullback and speedy tailbacks behind a big offensive line, and a hardnosed defense with toughness in the trenches and linebackers and defensive backs who fly around and make plays.

And no matter who graduates, the Cardinals are still going to be a force to be reckoned with the next season.

Janicke said this year’s seniors are

ready to take the reins from their predecessors.

“We lost some great kids again from last year – we were a 5-4 team and those seniors were able to propel us to a semifinal, which was really cool. But unfortunately, like anything else, they have to move on with life,” Janicke said. “But the thing that’s cool about that is now other kids get an opportunity to step up and let it be their time for a little bit.

“We’ve got a really interesting group of seniors, a lot of them that have been starters since they were sophomores, and they’re ready to be leaders on this team. It’s just same old, same old, just keep the train moving and hopefully get some more guys involved. It may be some different names, but that’s what’s really cool about this whole experience.”

A lot of that experience can be found on the offensive and defensive lines. It’s always a welcome sight for a team that relies on the ground game to be able to build their scheme behind veteran players up front.

“It’s pretty key, just the experience on the line. It’s going to help us a lot because we all know what we’re doing and just how it all works,” Bocker said. “We all bond together and it makes it easy to play together. We’re in the weight room a lot and just all the stuff we do together makes us mesh on the field.”

Janicke is looking to guys such as Bocker and Sanders to lead the way and help fill the void left by last year’s senior class. The Cardinals lost four of their top six rushers, including workhorse Johnny Kobler (216 rushes, 1,488 yards, 24 TDs) and speedster McKeon Crase (67 rushes, 391 yards, 5 TDs), as well as quarterback Brock Smith (59 rushes, 382 yards, 6 TDs; 11-for-35 passing, 182 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs).

Forreston had eight players run for at least 97 yards last season in a true share-the-wealth dis-tribution of the

ning backs last year, so us three are trying to fill those spots,” Sanders said. “Our offensive line has all stepped up completely this year, too. We have two three-year starters and one that played last year, then we have a couple of juniors who have played two years now.”

While it’ll be a run-heavy attack again this fall, the Cardinals might be a little more comfortable airing the ball out when they feel like it.

“Our strength is to run the ball,” Bocker said, “but we can definitely pass the ball now, too. We’ve been working on it all offseason, so that should help.”

ball. Sanders will lead the next wave of backs. He ran for 938 yards and 12 touchdowns on 129 carries last season and also had 88 yards and a touchdown receiving.

Micah Nelson ran for 513 yards and seven scores on 49 rushes in 2022 and also had 68 yards and two TDs receiving.

“Me, Alex Ryia and Micah Nelson, we all have stepped up huge this offseason because we lost a couple good run-

He added that another deep playoff run and a potential state berth are at the top of Forreston’s list of goals this season, and Sanders agreed that the key to that isn’t just physical.

“The team is really built together and we enjoy playing football with each other, and that’s huge,” Sanders said. “It’s just been really enjoyable. You’re not dreading going to practice, you’re out there having fun and bonding as a team while still working hard to get where we want to be.”

Polo looks to pick up where it left off

Marcos bring back experienced lines, dynamic players at skill positions

Last season was one of exponential growth for the Polo Marcos. Now, they hope to keep building from there.

After starting 2022 with several question marks following their second straight Illinois 8-Man Football Association state championship, the Marcos came out of the gate a bit slowly.

But in both of their losses through the first four weeks, they found something to hang their hats on. Against Amboy-LaMoille-Ohio in the season opener, it was an 81/2-minute touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. Against rival Milledgeville in Week 4, it was a new direction on offense.

Polo won the rest of its regularseason games, then made a run to the I8FA state semifinals for the third straight season before losing on the final play of the game to eventual champion West Central.

“I don’t think many people watch-

ing us Week 1 would’ve thought we would be one play away from going to Monmouth again [to play in the state championship game], but our kids really dealt with adversity well last year, and matured a huge amount in that 12-week schedule,” Polo coach Ted Alston said. “The nice thing is we have a lot of big contributors coming back this year who have matured even more – physically matured, mentally matured – and become our leaders.”

The biggest improvement as the season wore on was in the trenches. With the offensive and defensive lines decimated by losses to graduation after the 2021 season, the Marcos were looking to a lot of inexperienced players stepping into key roles up front.

That group got better and better each week, and by the end of the season was paving the way for a 2,000yard rusher Brock Soltow and a 900yard rusher in Avery Grenoble.

The only senior in that group last year was Waylon Harris, so now the lines look to be a strength from Day 1 this fall.

“Our offensive line last year was key. We lost a lot of seniors from the year before and we weren’t very big, but you don’t really need size in eightman – it’s more about speed – and we just kept getting better,” senior Landen Brooks said. “And we return pretty much everyone from that offensive line besides one guy and I think we’ve already got that one spot filled, so if we continue with what we’ve got going and our guys can step up like they did last year in the playoffs and continue to play like we did at the end of last year, we should be good.”

The playoff run was even more impressive considering Grenoble suffered a knee injury the day before the first-round game. The loss of their standout running back/linebacker would have played mind games with some teams, but not the Marcos. They rallied around their fallen leader and used it as fuel for their playoff run.

One of the players who stepped up when Grenoble went down was Delo Fernandez, who had some huge touchdown runs in the postseason last year

and provided a strong second option after Soltow.

Fernandez believes that strong finish to 2022 will pay dividends right from the start in 2023.

“I think we’re going to start off really strong,” Fernandez said. “We’re going to know our offense a little better. I feel good about our team this year. I feel really confident in my team to be able to fill in the spots that we lost seniors from last year.”

The offense started clicking after the switch at halftime against Milledgeville in Week 4. Soltow started taking the direct snap in a Wildcat formation and he would either hand it off to Grenoble or keep it himself. Cayden Webster was able to move to a halfback position and serve as a lead blocker and Polo started to find its rhythm, scoring 60 points or more in each of the last three weeks of the regular season.

That has the Marcos thinking big once again this fall.

“We’ve got tons of confidence. After our losses [last season], we were kind of stuck and didn’t really know what to do. Then we got a new offense going and picked up some big wins along the way,” Brooks said. “We went into the semifinals against the best team – they won the state title – and played a very good game, played them very close, right down to the final seconds. I think that will just continue into this year.”

Soltow led the area in rushing by a wide margin last season. His 2,407 yards were 800 more than the next back and his 39 touchdowns were 15 more than the next player. He also ended up throwing for 202 yards and four touchdowns after the offensive change.

Fernandez finished with 327 yards and four scores, and Noah Dewey is also back and looking for a bigger role after a touchdown run and a touchdown catch last year. Both Fernandez and Dewey were on the Class 1A 4x100-meter state championship relay team for Forreston-Polo this past spring, as well as the fifth-place 4x200 relay. Dewey and Soltow ran on the fourth-place 4x400 relay team in Charleston.

With such success the direct result of hard work, it’s no wonder the Marcos have put in the time and effort this offseason to try to improve.

“It’s been a good summer for us. I think we’ve got nice depth, we’ve got good skill, we’ve got all of our linemen except one coming back on each side of the ball, and whenever you can have that experience, that’s going to help,” Alston said. “There’s a couple kids we have to replace that are going to be tough to replace, but hopefully our kids are up for that and do all right with that. I think we’ll be pretty competitive.”

The key to that will be hard work day in and day out, according to the

players.

“It’s just showing up to practice everyday with the mindset to get better,” Fernandez said. “We just have to stay focused, keep at it.”

“Showing up to practice everyday and giving it your all, really, that’s the key,” Brooks said. “If you’re dogging it in practice, you’re going to dog it in the game, and you can’t continue doing that if we want to win. If you show up to practice and you want to get better, we’ll get better. Our mindset is state championship all the way. State championships are always fun to get, even if you’ve gotten some previously, so we want to keep working hard and adding those.”

Words cannot convey my thanks to all who attended Bob’s celebration of life.

To those who were unable to make it, you were there in spirit. The love surrounding me and my family was overwhelming. One never realizes how much love and respect is given.

It was wonderful to hear stories and see so many friends and family. My family is so fortunate to have so much support. Please forgive me if I missed seeing and speaking to you.

Many, many thanks! Our loved one is gone but not forgotten.
