stressfulsituations.SomedaysIonlyhad thestrengthtocryouttoGod.

Eventhoughmylifeisfilledwithproof ofwhatGodcando,Istillworry.Istillcry outtoGodforhelpandforguidance.Sometimes,IwishHecouldjustfixallthethings thatarebotheringmyfamily, friendsand neighbors.

Itisnoteasytounderstandwhy things happenthewaytheydo.Weareallfacing difficultsituationsatdifferenttimesinour lives.KnowingthatGodiswithuscanhelp easethatpain.ItrytorememberhowGod hastouchedthelivesaroundme.

Radostits growing network, spreading message as 2022 Illinois Teacher of the Year

Beingonsabbaticalandhaving speaking engagementsscheduled acrossIllinoishasn’tkeptSpanish teacherKimberlyRadostitsfrom spendingtimeinthehallsofOregon Junior-SeniorHighSchool.

“OnthedaysthatIdonothave somethingscheduled,Icouldwork fromhome,butI’vechosentospend mytimehereatschool,”saidRadostits,the2022IllinoisTeacherofthe Year. “SoIactuallydomyworkfrom thefoyerofOregonJunior-Senior HighSchool,whichallowsmetointeractwithmystudentsandmycolleaguesinbetweenpassingperiods. Andthoughthey’reinformalconversations,I’mabletostayconnected to …thepeoplewhoreallydo energize me.”

The37-year-oldFairdaleresident wasnamedthestate’stopteacheron March,22,2022.

TheIllinoisStateBoardof Education’sTeacher oftheYearprogram recognizes“thebestoftheteaching profession”inthestate,accordingto theISBEwebsite.Allpublicandnonpublicpre-K-12educatorswhohave morethanfiveyearsofexperienceare eligibletowin.

InJune 2022,Radostitsbegan a yearlongambassadorshipthatallows hertotravelthroughoutIllinoisspeakingtoeducatorsandeducationstakeholders.ThestateisfundingRadostits’ sabbaticalandthecostofateacherto coverherabsence.

“Mynetworkhasexpandedinways thatIneverthoughtpossible,”she said.“It’sjustsoawesometobewith like-mindedpeople.”

Researchshe’sbeendoingincludes interviewingschoolsthatarehigh-performingintermsoffreshmenontrack, whichisanindicatorpulledinbythe ISBE.Radostitsthenhighlightsthose schools’systemsonherblog,Fresh TakesonFreshmanonTrack.

“Man,everytimeIwalkawayfrom oneofthosemeetings,I’mlike,‘Oh, myGod,Icannotwaittogetbackin theclassroomandtryoutsomeof thesethingsthatotherschoolsare doing,’”Radostitssaid.

Radostitssaidtherearethreemain

groupsofpeopleshehastriedtoreach: aspiringteachers,currentteachers andadministratorsandstakeholders.

Hermessagetoaspiringteachersis thatteachingprovidestheopportunity tobecreativeeveryday,tobealifelonglearnerandtoimpactchangeon alllevelsthroughstudentswhoarethe world’sfuture.

Intalkingtohighschoolandcollege students lookingtogetintoteaching, Radostitssaidsheseesabrightfuture foreducation.

“I’msolookingforwardtothe energythatthey’regoingtobring,the fireintheirbellythattheyhavetopromotepositivechange,”shesaid.“Ijust can’twaittoseethemagicthatthey’re goingtomakehappenwhentheygetin here.”

Forthosecurrentlyineducation, Radostitswantstoemphasizethe importanceofdevelopingrelationshipswithstudents,students’families andwithcolleagues.

“Itrulybelievethatallstudents needtofeelknownandvalued,”she said.“Itrulybelievethatallstudents needtobegivenaccesstotheskills andthesupportsthattheyneedtobe successful,regardlessoftheirbackground.Ialsobelievethatteachers needallofthesamethings.”

Familiesneedtoknowthattheir children’seducatorsbelievetheyare worthwhileandhavethepotentialto beresponsible,productivecitizens andgoodhumans,Radostitssaid. Additionally,iffamiliesareinvitedto learn about ateacher’sworldandare madecomfortableenoughtoshare what’shappeningintheirworld,it helpseducatorsbetterservestudents,

shesaid.

Sheandhercolleagueslearnfrom eachothereverydayaboutinstructionalstrategies,classroom content matterandstudents,Radostitssaid, notingthatshereliesonconversations withcolleaguestodowhatshedoes. Thoseconversationsmightbeinaprofessionaldevelopmentmeeting, but moreoftenarearoundthewaterfountainornexttothejammedcopy machine.

“Thisisbiggerthanme.Iamnot thebestteacherinOregon,Illinois,or inthestateorinthecountry,”Radostitssaid.“Iamateacherthatisdoing mybestforstudents eachandevery day,andI’mdoingthatalongsidesome incredibleeducators.”

Radostitssaidshe’dlovetosee administratorsandstakeholders investinmorementorshipprograms forstudentsandteachersalike.

“I’vebeentalkingtothemabout systemsofsupportandthingsthat workhereinOregonthatIbelieveare replicableandscalable,”Radostits said,referringtotheHawksTake FlightandNewTeacherAcademyprogramsshehelpedcreate.

HawksTakeFlightandtheNew TeacherAcademyaretwodifferent programs,butthey’revery similar, shesaid.Botharerelationship-based mentorship programs–one forstudentsandoneforteachers.

OnJan.25,Radostitswa s announced as one of fivefinalistsfor 2023NationalTeacheroftheYear.The winnerwillbeannouncedinMarch andwillspendayear“servingasan ambassadorforeducationandan advocateforallteachersandstu-

TheNationalTeacheroftheYear Programwascreated in1952andis runbytheCouncilofChiefState SchoolOfficers,anationalnonprofit organizationthatrepresents all58 leadersofK-12educationsystemsin theU.S.anditsterritories.

Finalistswereselectedfrom a cohortof55teachersrepresentingthe U.S.statesandterritories.Theother fourareHarleeHarvey,afirstgrade teacherfromAlaska;CarolynKielma, ahighschoolscienceteacherfrom Connecticut;JermarRountree, apreK-8physicaleducationandhealth teacherfromWashington,D.C.;and RebeckaPeterson,ahighschoolmath teacherfromOklahoma.

Tobenamedafinalistisexciting, Radostitssaid.Whileshelovesbeing inherclassroomandspendingtime withherstudents,beingNational TeacheroftheYearwouldbea“whirlwindofanadventure”shealsowould loveandleaninto.

Havingreviewedthebiographiesof herfellowCCSSOcohortmembers, Radostits“couldn’tbemoreexcited” toseetheminmid-February,when they’llhave anin-personmeet-upin California.Sheplanstothankeveryone –andhugwhomeverwillallow hertodoso.

“They’removingmountainsin theirstatesandI’msoimpressed by eachandeveryoneofthoseincredible educators,”Radostitssaid.“Ijustwant tospongeupwhatthey’redoing. I wanttolearnfromthem.Iwanttolean intosomeconversationswiththem.”

Forrestonvillageandpolicestaff movedintotheirnewofficespacelast weekafterayearofplanningandrenovations.

Locatedat301N.WalnutAve.,the newForrestonVillageHallhousesthe clerks,publicworksdepartment,police departmentandaspaceforvillage boardmeetings.Employeesspent Feb. 1-3movingintothebuilding.

“Ilikethespace,”PoliceChiefChris Thielsaidwhilestandinginhisnew officeFeb.2.“Ibelievethatoverhereis moremodernandmorewelcomingto thecitizensofForreston.Ithinkthey’re goingtobemorecomfortablecomingin here.It’samorerelaxedatmosphere for them.”

Theformervillage hallbuilding, whichistwoblockssouthat102N.WalnutAve.,wasbuiltintheearly1900s andisextremelyoutdated,Village ClerkTanyaShenbergersaid.It’s a smallspace–madesmallerbynecessaryfurnishings suchasfilecabinets –andeveryonewas“ontopofeach other,”she said.

“Forthepolice,there’stimesIwas downhereandtheywouldhaveanincidentandtheywouldhavetointerview peopleinthegaragetokeepthemall separate,”UtilityBillingClerkSonia Greensaid.“Theyhadthemintheir policecars,theyhadsomesittingout herewaitingtobeinterviewedand we’reallhere. Therewas no privacy.”

TheCOVID-19pandemiccomplicatedthingswithspacedistribution furtherbecausetherewasnospaceto socialdistance,Greensaid.Putting a dividerbetweenthetwoclerks’work spaceswouldhavemadeitimpossible togetoutfrombehindthefront desk, shesaid.

PublicWorksMaintenanceSupervisorScottTimmalsosaidheappreciates theadditionalsquarefootage.

“Wecanhaveourownlittleareato doourthingsthatweneedtogetdone,” hesaid.“We’llhavethecapabilitiesof, like,gettingourmapsputupandthings likethat.Ijust feelthatwe’regoingto beabletoutilizeourtimealittlebitbetterwithhavingmorespace.”

Forseveralyears,therewastalkof updatingtheoldbuilding,butthework wouldhavebeentoocostly,Greensaid. Theoutsideofthebuildingisfalling apartandanelevatorwouldhavetobe installedtousethesecondfloor,which

isonlyaccessiblebygoingoutside,she said.

Thenewbuildingisagoodinvestmentforthewholecommunity,Green said.

“Sincetheybuiltit,thishasbeenvillagehall,soit’sabigchangeforalotof people,”Shenbergersaidduringan interviewatthevacated102N.Walnut Ave.

Thereareresidentswhohavemeaningful memoriesof thebuilding,Green said,pointingtoCarolGagliardi,who wasvillage clerkfor30years.

“She[Gagliardi]broughtherpaymentinandwaslike,‘I’vejustgottoget onemorelookatitbeforeyouguys move,’”Shenbergerrecalled.“Shehad alotofmemoriesdownhere.Soshe kindofwalkedthroughandlookedatit all.She’sexcitedthough.Shesaidit’s beenalongtimecoming.”

chaseof301N.WalnutAve.–formerly Green’sMotorCompany–onJan.25, 2022, for $155,000,accordingtoOgle Countypropertytaxrecords.Thepropertywaspurchasedoutright;nomortgageorloanswerenecessary,Village PresidentMarkMetzgersaidinapreviousinterview.

“IthinkNo.1is,whenwepolledit lastyear,theywantedustostaydowntown,sothatcheckedthatbox,” MetzgersaidFeb.6.“We’restilldowntown.Thenitoffersthem abeautiful buildingwheretheycancomein.It’s justalot moreuser-friendly.”

Theoriginalrenovationbudgetwas $80,000,buttheyendedupspending $155,573.40,VillageTrusteeVickyeNorrissaid.She chairstheFinanceCommitteeandwasamemberoftheNew BuildingCommitteethatoversawrenovations.

Someofthefundscamefromthevil-

lage’sAmericanRescuePlanActallotmentandfromtwo OgleCountyEconomicDevelopmentgrantsthey received,Norrissaid.

Norrissaidshedidnotapproveof theamountofmoneyspentonrenovations.

“Idon’tapproveofspendingallthe ARPAfundsthatwedidforthebuilding,”shesaid.“Ithinkitcouldhave beenhandledbetter.”

DuringtheFeb.6VillageBoard meeting,thetrusteesaffirmedthey wanttoselltheoldbuilding;theydid notvoteonthematter.Metzgerplansto consultwiththevillage’sattorney aboutthenextstepsintheselling process.

Boardmembersalsovotedunanimouslytoapprovepurchasinga25-foot flagpolefrom FreeportFlagfor$3,230. Theflagpolewillbeinstalledatthenew villagehall.

Fultonofferedpropertyalongthe MississippiRiverandthatwouldhave beenlovely.Perhapstheywould not havetheirwindmilltheretodayifthat hadbeenthecase.

LincolnlivedinIllinois31years,18301861.

HewasborninHardenCounty,KentuckyonFeb.12,1809,nineyearsbefore Illinoisobtainedstatehoodand27years beforeJohnPhelpsfoundedOregon.

Previoustostatehoodwewerepartof theIllinoisTerritoryandpriortothat theNorthwestTerritory.Atageeight Lincoln’sfamilymovedtoIndianaand thenatage21theymovedtoIllinois.

Lincolnrecalledhedroveanoxen farmwagonfromIndianatoIllinois.His family,likeotherearlysettlersinIllinois,werelookingforabetterlife.

TheHawksdidhaveastrongshowing,butonlyintheearlyrounds.When thetournamentchampionshipwason thelineinthesemifinals,Oregonwon onlythreeof10matches,withfourof thelossescomingtowrestlersfrom teamchampionLena-Winslow-Stocktonandtwotowrestlersfromrunner-upDakota.
