Thismorninginchurch,wewere greetedbySandra Ford. PastorSuzanne HallStoutsharedhermessageforthe morning.PastorSuzannehadaspecial messageforouryoungfriends,Ameliaand Fiona.MargaretHammesandDonHay alsohelpedwiththeservice.

Itwas soniceto visitwithSandrathis morning.Shehasjustreturnedfroman extendedstaywithherdaughtersandtheir families.Overthepastthreeweeks,she traveledbetween BloomingtonandWheatonvisitingwithherfamily.

AfewdaysbeforeChristmas,Sandra traveledsouthtoBloomingtontovisitwith herdaughter,CrystalPatterson,herhusband,Jack,theirchildrenandgrandchildren.ThePattersonfamilyandSandra attendedtheChristmasEveserviceat EastviewChristianChurch.

PoloAlderpersonJoeyKochsmeiersaid hehasgottenmultiplephonecallsabout garbageandrecyclingbeingdumpedinthe sametruck,andaskedPozziwhetherthat isintentional.

“Wedonotco-minglegarbageandrecycling,”Pozzisaid.“Itgoesagainstourcompanystandards.…Youmaystillseeagarbageguydumparecyclingcan,butthat wouldbebecausetherecyclingguycame byandsaid,‘It’sfulloftrash;youhaveto pickthisup.’”

It’sasituationthecompany plans to monitor,hesaid.Pozziaskedthatcouncil members,asleadersofthecommunity,do soaswell.

Somepeopleseetherecyclingbinas a placetoputrecycling,whileothersseeitas justanothertrashreceptacle,henoted.Ifa customerrepeatedlyusestherecyclingbin for trash, the company will take action, Pozzisaid.

“We’lltagthecartwith,‘recyclingonly; nomoretrash,’”hesaid.“Ifitcontinues happening, wemightapproachthecityto askforhelp.”

RepublicServices,whichisbasedin Arizona,becamethesecond largestnonhazardoussolidwastemanagementcompanyintheU.S.afterpurchasingitslarger competitor,Allied,in2008for$6.1billion.

Fundraising effort for new fire station continues

TheMt.MorrisFireProtectionDistrict’sefforttosecurefundsforanew homebasestillhasawaystogo.

About$1.13millionhasbeen securedforconstructionofanewfire stationthroughfundraisingand grants,butthat’sonly one-quarteroftheestimated cost.

“I’llestimateourtotalprojectwillcost$4millionto$4.5 million,”saidScottDiehl,Fire DistrictBoardofTrustees president.“We’retalking maybetwoyearstillweget thisthingdone;that’sanestimate,too.”

Theexistingstationis nearly100yearsoldandfeatureslowceilingsandnarrow overheaddoors,isconstructedwith porousbrickanddoesn’thave space foroutdoorwork.Thebuildingorigi-

OnJune21,2022,OgleCounty BoardmembersapprovedtheFireDistrict’sapplicationfora$42,500economic development grant.Those fundsarecomingfromthecounty’s AmericanRescuePlanActallocation.

“Wecanputthattowardsiteassessmentandpurchasingrealestate,” Diehlsaid.

TheFireDistrictisworkingon a loanapplicationtotheU.S.DepartmentofAgricultureRuralDevelopmentProgramforthefullprojectcost, butfirstmustsecurealocationforthe newfirestation,Diehlsaid.The USDA’sRuralDevelopmentProgram suppliesloansforcapitalprojects,he said.

“It’sourcheapestinterestrate,” Diehlsaid.“That’swhywe’regoing thatdirection.There’sjustanawful lotofpaperworkinvolved.Theloan applicationis50to60pages.”

Theymight or mightnotreceive thefullamounttheyrequest,hesaid. Itwilldependonhowtheirloanapplicationisanalyzed.

Themajorityofthemoneysecured sofariscomingfromthefederalgovernment’sfiscal2023budget.

Thefederalgovernmentallocated $1milliontotheFireDistrictfor design,engineeringandsiteworkof thenewfirestationinitsfiscal2023 OmnibusAppropriationsAct,which wassignedintolawbyPresidentJoe BidenonDec.29,2022.

U.S.Sen.TammyDuckworthsubmittedtheproject forinclusioninthe federalbudgetascongressionally directedspending.Shesaidtheproject earnedhersupportforseveralreasons.

“Thefirestation,it’sbeen100years withoutanyupdates,sotheseupdates arecriticallyneeded,” Duckworth said.“Iputmypriorityonthis,gave thistotheleadershipandsaid,‘When theOmnibuspasses,thisisatoppriorityforme.OfallthethingsI’masking for,thisisoneofmyverytoppriorities.’”

Aproject’s fiscalresponsibilityis veryimportant to her, Duckworth said.

“I’m notgoingtothrowmoneyif thisFireProtectionDistricthadnot

gottentheirducksinarowandhadan actualplan,knewwhattheyneededto do,knewexactlywhattheyneededto fund,waswillingtocomeupanddo thefundraisingthemselves,”Duckworthsaid.“Iftheydidn’thaveallof thatinarow,nomatterwhattheneed was,Iwasn’tgoingtofundit.”

DiehlsaidthatiftheUSDARural Developmentloan applicationis approved,the$1millionwillflow directlythereandcomeofftheFire District’sloanbalance.

“Thebiggestthingiswecan’tputso muchmoney into theprojectthat we can’toperateasaFireDistrict,”Diehl said.“Wehavetofundourambulance andfire.”

Withtechnologytoday,one has quickaccess to newspapersforany articlesofinterest.Atthemuseum,we stillhaveashelvingunitwithmany Tri-CountyPressnewspapersofyears past.Weprobablyneedtogetridof thosepapersandclearoutthatcorner. Wejusthavenotdonethat.

Hemadeseveralpictureswiththose chipsandwealreadyhadone.Nowwe haveanotherandofcoursetheyneed togotogetherinthemuseum.

Wealsoneededtodocumentwhat

hadbeenbroughtinintotheledger thatPaul startedafewyearsago. Probablydocumentingonthecomputerwouldbemore uptodate,but I stillputthingsdownintotheoldledger.Someoneyoungerthan Ican somedaybringusuptodate.

Alsofamilytextileswerebroughtin andthosewewilltakeuptoAplington House.Itwasinterestinglookingat theoldclothinganddecidinghowto handleit.

Arethereanylittleinsectsinanyof the clothing?Bethsaidifwewerenot certain,eacharticlecanbeputinto a largeplasticbagandwecandealwith itlater.Itookthebook“SavingStuff” hometoreadupandshewasexactly correct.

Ifonefeelstheremightbesomethinglurkingaround,thenyougettwo typesofmothcrystals,putthemin a smallpieceofcottonfabric,tieitshut withapieceofstring,andplaceitin thebagwith theclothing.Onetypeof

crystalhandlestheadultinsectsand theothertakescareoftheeggsthe adultslay.

Oneofthetextileswasatablecloth madefrom yo-yosandpastelfabric wasused.Icannotwaittoplaceiton thetableatAplingtonHouse.Ihave a bagofWaterburyyo-yosandIneedto sewthemtogether foraclothfor myself.

DotScaggswasalwayssewingon yo-yos.Theyarecirclesoffabricand youhemthem.Then youpullthem togetherinalittlegatheredcircle. I needtogetbusywithmyownanddo somethingwiththem.Ihavenever workedwiththembutIcanfigureit out.

Stronghold– StrongholdCastle wasbuiltbyWalterStrong, publisher andeditoroftheChicagoDailyNews andhis wifeJosephine. Inspiredby Europeancastles,theStrongswanted toconstructtheirowninasummer retreatforfamilyand friends.

LoradoTaft’sEternalIndian –AlthoughsculptorLoradoTaftdedi-

catedhisstatuetoallNative Americans,mostpeoplerefer toitasBlackHawk.Estimatedtoweigh100tons,the 48-foottallhollowfigureis thoughttobethesecondlargestconcretemonotypestatue intheworld.

TheChanaSchool –ChanaSchoolwasofficially placedontheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlacesin2005. Thetwo-roomschoolhouseservedthe communityfrom1883anditwas retiredin1953.RelocatedtoOregon ParkEast,theschoolhousenowhelps studentslearnwhateducationwas likeinthelate1900s.
