Ithasbeenaverydrearystarttothe newyear.Whileourdaysseemdarkonthe outside,ourheartsarefilledwiththelight oftheworld.Jesusfillsourheartswith lightandloveeverydayof theyear.For Hisconstantpresence,wearetrulythankful.

Thismorninginchurch,wewere greetedbyDebOhlwine,withsomehelp fromhergranddaughter,Claire.Pastor SuzanneHallStoutsharedhermessagefor theNewYear.PastorSuzanneshared a specialmessage ofthemagiwiththechildren,Amelia,Fiona,andClaire.

AnefforttorestoretheAmerican LegionMemorialFountaininMt.Morrisistakingshape.

TheMt.MorrisEconomicDevelopmentCorporation,anonprofit501(c) (3),hasacquiredownershipofthelot onwhichthefountainislocated,said RobUrish,amemberoftheMt.Morris EconomicDevelopmentCorporation. Thepropertyaddressis16S.Wesley Ave., Mt.Morris.

“Thefountainwaserectedin1926in honorofWorldWarIservicemen,” Urishsaid.“ThelocalAmerican LegionPost[No.143]underwrotethe erectionofit.Therearestonesthere fromallovertheworld,butpredominatelyNorthAmericaandtheMidwest.”

KableNewsCo.and KableProduct Servicesdeededthepropertytothe EDCfor$0inexchangeforaproperty

appraisalthecompany coulduseas a taxwrite-off,Urishsaid.Originally, Kableexecutiveswanted$10,000for theproperty,hesaid.

Theappraisalcameinat$125,000, andthetaxbenefitofadonationofthat amount“farexceedsthe$10,000”originallysough,Urishsaid.

TheEDChasbeenincontactwith the Wisconsin-basedKohlerFoundationregardingrestorationofthefountain,hesaid.

Thetentativeplanistodeedthe propertytotheKohlerFoundation, whichinturnwillunderwritetherestorationofthefountainlaterthisyear, Urish said.Beforethatcanhappen, though,theKohlerFoundation’s boardhastoapprovetheproject.

Oncethefountainisrestored,the propertywillbedeededbacktothevillageofMt.Morris,Urishsaid.

Aweekendcrashhasprompted OregoncityofficialstoasktheIllinois DepartmentofTransportation whetherbarrierpolescanbeaddedto thenorthwestcornerofIllinoisRoutes 2and64.

AnSUVendedupin theglass garagedoorofOgleCountyBrewery–whichislocatedonthatcorner–after itwasstruckbyanothervehiclewhose driverranaredlightearlySunday

afternoon.Noonewasinjured,accordingtopolice.

“Wewerereallylucky.Wedodgeda bulletonthisonethatnobodywas there[intheway] whenthiscarwent through,”StreetsandPublicImprovementsCommissionerTimKrugtold fellowcouncilmembersTuesday.“It’s justamatteroftime.It’sgoingtohappen.”

OgleCountyBrewery’saddressis 400W.WashingtonSt.,whichisthe nameofRoute64withincitylimits; Route2iscalledFourthStreetincity limits.

Thebarrierpolesarerelatively easytoinstall,FinanceCommissioner TerrySchustersaid.It’sanideaworth pursuing,hesaid.

“Wewerelucky therewasnoone

sittingatatablebythedoor because thedoorjustsweptin,”Mayor Ken Williamssaid.“Wealsotalkedabout, hadtheygoneinclosertothestreet, theywouldhavegonethroughthe windowandknockedoveroneofthose tanksbecausethatlittlekneewall’s notgoingtostopanSUVfromcoming through.

“Soyouhearaboutthosethingsand youhavetolookandsay,‘Whatcanwe dotokeepourcitizenssafeandour communitysafe?’”headded.

Krugnotedthatwhilethecityisn’t legallyliablefortheintersection,there stillisalevelofmoralresponsibility Assuch,hehasinstructedPublic WorksDirectorBill Covellto reach outtoIDOT.

Trip to Aunt Carma’s funeral brings back memories

InSeptember,whenIwastravelingwithmysonBruce,wecame backthroughChampaigntosee my AuntCarmaDielatAmber Glen HomeinUrbana.

AuntCarmawas100inJulyandshe wasmydad’syoungestsister.AsIheld herhandandtalkedtoher,Iknew I couldexpectaphonecallanydaytellingmeshewasnolongerapartofthis earth.

ThephonecallcameDec.30andthe familystartedto makeplansabouther funeralandburial.Myfamilyarrived inChampaignonWednesdayandearly Thursday.Wednesdaynightwestayed inOgden,whichiseastofChampaign inmy cousin’sguesthouse.

Thehousewasbuiltinthelate1800s andhasbeenfullyrestored.Itwas a stepbackintime althoughwehad electricity,runningwaterandindoor facilities.

ItwasthesecondtimeIhavestayed thereandIloveeveryminuteofit.

Inthisroomisa12-footworkbench fromabarnwithvicegripsandall.In thecenterofthisworkbenchwerered pfaltzgraffChristmasdishesthatwere

stunningwitharedteapotinthecenterofthem.Iloveredanywayand usingthemwasadelight.

MycousinisacollectorofnutcrackersfromGermanysotheplacewasfull ofnutcrackersofvarioussizesplusall kindsofotherChristmas decorations. Whatawonderfultimeoftheyearto bethere.

EarlythenextmorningwegatheredatmyAuntCarma’sLutheran Churchandgreetedallmycousins fromallover.Manyofmycousins fromCape Girardeau,Missouri,were thereandwewerealltheretohonor my100-year-oldAuntCarma.Shewas thelastofthatgeneration.

Followingtheservices,weall headedsouthofMattoon,Illinois,for theGilaLutheranCemetery,whichis outinthemiddleofnowhere.You havetoknowwhereyouaregoingin ordertofindit.Ihavebeentheremany timesasIgrewup.Myfatherwasborn justdowntheroadnearwheremy UncleLowellandAuntCarmahad

livedformanyyearsastheyraised theirfamily.

IlovedthatareaasIvisitedmy grandparentsthroughtheyears.But houseshavebeentorndownandthe landscapehadchanged. Eventhe old churchisnolongerthere.Justthe cemeteryremainswheremygrandparentsareburied,othermembersof theIsleyfamilyandmanypeopleof thearea.

Followingtheservicesatthecemetery,wegatheredinNewton,Illinois, toeatandreminisce.Eachoneshared wheretheynowlive,whatishappeningintheirfamily,andstoriesfrom thepast.Inow,at theageof 90,find myselfthematriarchofthefamily.

ItseemssolongagothatI,as a younggirl,rodemygrandfather’s horseupanddownthoseroadsnear thecemeteryandyetattimesitseems likeonlyyesterday.

Bettyproducedabookletnamedthe SculptureTrailandwasinvolvedina brochureconcerningMargaretFuller’svisittoOregon,identified the sevenwondersofOregonandpro-

ducedapostcardofBlackHawk.

It’samazingwhatBettyaccomplishedduring herlifetime.Shewas born onthefamilyfarmNov.91926, locatedneartheSilverCreekCemetery.

She graduatedvaledictorianfrom LeafRiverHighSchool.Shereceiveda scholarshipfromtheUniversityofIllinoiswheresheearnedherbachelor’s degreeinLatin.

ThelongtimeOregonboyshead coachwasinductedintotheIllinois TrackandCrossCountryCoaches AssociationHallofFameattheorganization’sannualclinicandbanquet Jan.7inLombard.

“It’sbeenkindoffunwatching friendsofminelikePeteBrownand DougEngelandArtCarlson,whohave gotteninbefore, butyouneverreally planonithappeningtoyou,”Spratt said.“Youseeithappen,butyounever expectityourself.It’ssuchasubjectivethingthatyouneverknow.

“ButwhenIheard,Ithought,‘Wow, that’scool.’Iguess39yearsofhard workkindofpaidoff.”

That’snottheonlywaySpratt’s hardworkhaspaidoff,andhe’squick topointtoalltheathletes–boththe statechampionsandtheequallyhardworkingnon-champs–asthereason forthesuccessoftheprogramshe’s coachedoverthepast39years.

“Whenyouthinkaboutit,inthe last39yearsI neverthrewashotor disc,neverranthehurdles,never handedoffabaton,neverdidanyof that,”hesaid.“It’sallthegreatkids andassistantcoacheswhohaveledto oneawardforyouandit’skindof humbling.”

Afterspendingthefirstnineyears ofhiscoachingcareerleadingthe Galenagirlsteam,SprattcametoOregonandspentnineyearsasajunior hightrackcoachbeforetakingover

thehighschoolprogram in2003,the yearafterCarlsonretired.

InhistimeleadingtheHawks,four individualsandarelayteamhavewon sixstatetitles,40haveearnedtop-nine statemedals,andOregonwonthe2009 statechampionshipasateamtogo witheight sectionaltitles.Inhistime asanassistantorheadcoach,Spratt’s teamshavewon15sectionaltitles, sevenindividualorrelaystatetitles, 57statemedals,ateamtitleandapair offourth-placeteamfinishes.

Addinthree-timemedalistDeb RichardsonfromhisGalenadays,and Spratthasplentyofmemoriestolook backonashepondershisinduction speech.

“Allthestatechampions,Icanstill replaythoseinmymind,andeven

someofthegreateffortsnotatstate,” Sprattsaid.“IrememberwhenIwas in Galena,sprinterDebRichardson overtookRoxyDeVriesinthelast20 meterstowinthesectionalinthe 4x400,orwatchingMartinMcCormick runpeopledowninthe400,orJordan Thomasandwhathedidasasprinter. Allofthosethingsaretremendous, andtheystillstickwithme.”

Thomaswonthestatetitleinboth the100and200in2009,andalsofinishedsecondinthe400toleadthe Hawks tothe teamtitle.McCormick wonthe400statetitlein2005,and AndyTremble(2003,3,200)andAdam Tate(2005polevault)alsowonchampionshipsinindividualevents.The 20134x400teamofPierceDhaese, TommyMcCormick,GarrettNew-

man andTrevorOttenalso ranto a title.

Butit’snotjustthechampionsthat Sprattrecallsfondly.

“Thetalentedkidsobviouslyare memorable,butIalsothinkthatthere have beenso many lessathletically inclinedkidswhomadeitgreatto coach,”Sprattsaid.“Therehavebeen somanykidsovertheyearswhohaven’tbeenstatechampions,buthave mademajorimprovementsfromthe startoftheyeartotheend,orfromthe startoftheircareerstotheend,those aresomeofthebiggestandbestmemoriesforme.”

Sprattisintheprocessofputting togetherhis4½-minutevideospeech forthebanquet,andasallthenames andfacesandmemoriescomeflooding back,hesaidit’s“impossibletothank allthepeoplethatledtothismoment overthelast39years.”Buthesaidhe’s proudestoftheathleteshe’scoached andtheothercoacheshe’sworked withoverthepastfourdecades,and it’sthosepeoplewhohavenotonly madethispossible,butalso madethe experiencesospecial.

Second-placeRichmond-Burton hadastrongfinalroundandclosedthe gap, butOregonoutpacedtheRockets 196-165.ParkviewfromWisconsinwas thirdwith153.5points,followedby FultonandLisle.HostPolofinished sixthwith106.5points.

AssomeoneclosetoOregon trackandfield,itsaddensme toseeadeclineinwhatwas thepremiersmall-schoolprogramin allofnorthernIllinois.

However,itwasa joytoseecoach JimSprattinductedintotheIllinois TrackandCrossCountryCoaches AssociationHallofFame.

Besidestakingpartinacoaching clinichostedbytheassociationlast Saturday,mymainpurposeforbeing therewastoseecoachSpratthonored.

Occasionally,HOFsarenothing morethanalongevityaward.Notso withtheITCCCAHallofFame.Ithas tobeearnedandSpratthasdoneit withsevenstraightsectionaltitles leadinguptoastatechampionshipin 2009.Acoupleoffourth-placeteamfinishesand57individualstatemedalists paddedhisrésumé.

Thenumberofathleteswhoqualifieddownstatearetoonumerousto count.Hawktrackandfieldtrulywas oneoftheeliteintheentirestate,especiallyintheearly2000swhenasteady streamofathleticismpouredthrough theprogram.

It’sbeensaidyoucantellalotabout anindividualwhenthingsaren’tgoing sowell.PartofthecriteriaforITCCCA enshrinementischaracter.

ThoughOregonisnotgettingthe samehigh-caliberathletesasitonce did,Spratt’senthusiasmforcoaching hasnotwavered. Nomatterwhat a kid’sskilllevelis,hegivesthemthe sameattentionashewouldaJordan Thomas,themostdecoratedrunnerof Spratt’stenure.

Healsomadethesport fun for the kidsandtheyfeltcomfortablearound him,too,asdemonstratedbyastory hetoldmeaboutMikeGuzman,Andy TrembleandJasonAppel.Thosethree hadhimlaughingsohardthatheliterallyhadspaghetticomingoutofhis noseattheannualteammealatAvanti’sonthewaybackfromthe2003state meet.

“Thatalwayssticksoutbecauseit wasmyfirstyearandwehadjust missedoutbyoneplaceofateamtrophyandtheycalledmeovertositwith themattheirbooth,”Sprattsaid.“I wasfeelingdownandthosethreeguys weresohilarious,Icouldn’thelpbut feelbetter.”

Sprattisbestknownasasprintand relaycoach,asevidencedbythe Hawksplacinginallfourrelaysdownstateonthe2003team.Inthenext10 years,hecoached17morerelaysto statemedals.

Therealso weredisappointments, suchasin2004whenhighly-touted Oregonwentintothestatemeetwith theNo.1seeds inthe1,600and3,200 relays,thesecondseedinthe400relay andthirdseedinthe800relay.

Aterribledayinthepreliminaries ledtothe400and800relaysmissing thefinalsandthe1,600and3,200settlingforthirdplaces.Likeamissed

finalshotinabasketballsupersectionalordroppedtouchdownpassin thefootballplayoffs,trackcarriesthe sameemotional burdenofcomingup shortofglory.

Droppedbatons,botched exchanges,fallsoverahurdle,scratchingonalongjumpormissingopening heightonapolevaultcandriveatrack coachnuts,asSprattcanattestto. Still,heneverlosthiscoolorblamed hisathletes.

Hehadararegiftforaccepting whatbefellhimandnotlosingthe faith.Ultimately,hewasrewarded withthatmuchcoveted2009statetitle.

Jim’sbeenretiredfromteachingfor acoupleofyearsandremainswilling toheaduptheboystrackprogram. Beingatrackcoach doesn’thavethe samepressureasfootballorbasketballdoes,butitistoughtryingtofigureouthowtocoach18events.Hopefully,he’llstickwithitandmaybesee

arebirthinitsstature.

Forme,itwasanhonortositat a banquettablewithcoachSpratt,Doug Engle,JoeMortimerandArtCarlson, whocamefromNorthCarolina.All areHallofFamers–uniquetohave thatmanyfromsuchasmallschool.

TherearenootherschoolsinOgle Countythatevenhaveonecoachin theHallofFame.

Infact,onlylargesuburbanschools OakPark,Palatine,ConantandGlenbardWesthavemore.That’sasignificantstatementonthetrackandfield heritage inOregon.

Maybeinsteadofbemoaningthe currentstatusofHawkstrackand field,Ishouldbegratefulforsuch a strongtraditionofexcellence.
