Plano churches offer family fun at Trunk or Treat event

Police Chief Eaves, Mayor Hausler look out for safe holiday By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Halloween is a fun time for kids and even their parents, but safety is tops on the list for Plano Police Chief Steve Eaves and Mayor Bob Hausler, both of whom went through their list of safety tips at a recent city council meeting. Trick or treat hours in the city of Plano are 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. They said kids should wear light-colored clothIf you go ing that is short enough to keep from tripping. And Trick-orreflective tape on treat hours the sides, front and in the city back will make of Plano them visible in car are from 5 headlights. to 8 p.m. Kids should be Saturday. able to see and hear well, which means painted faces are better than masks. But any mask should include large eye holes, they said, and added that double-tied shoelaces will help avoid tripping. Avoid hard plastic or wooden props as part of costumes and replace them with soft foam props. Kids wearing costumes should avoid dogs that might become scared and bite them. All safety rules should be followed when crossing or walking in streets, and sidewalks should be used if available. And flashlights are recommended for walking in poorly lit areas. They said to cross streets only at corners or crosswalks when possible, and suggested sticking to neighborhoods you know. Kids should accept only wrapped or packaged candy, and because they may not know everyone who gives them candy, they should allow their parents to check it before eating it, even if wrapped.

he week of ghouls and goblins – and chocolate – is upon us. Some kids already got a head start last week as two Plano churches joined forces to offer a Trunk or Treat event aimed to offer an alternative to Halloween night celebrations. First Lutheran and United Methodist Church parking lots (James and Clark streets in Plano) opened their trunks to children through sixth grade for a funfilled event. Car trunks were decorated and Halloween items arranged in a huge square. Games, refreshments, a jump house, photo booth and best trunk contest were part of the event and donations of canned goods and paper products were collected for the Kendall County Food Pantry.
