Cruise Nights are a favorite summer tradition in downtown Plainfield

ruise Nights returns Tuesdays June 3 through Aug. 19. The weekly event draws around 300 cars and more than 2,000 visitors each week, said Tasha Marsaglia, Executive Director of the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We really try to bring the fun to the evening,” Marsaglia said.

Visitors stroll and view vehicles from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and each week features a different theme of vehicles. The event is open to all vehicles and there’s no fee to park and participate. Marsaglia said some car owners come out each week to share their prized vehicle and chat with spectators.

“This is my 12th year of this event and it’s great to see some of the same car owners come out every week, to the same spot where they catch up with friends,” Marsaglia said.

The Chamber is excited for the return of several sponsors including Darcy Motors, Webb Chevrolet of Plainfield, Rod Baker Ford and new sponsor Clean Image Car Wash & Detailing. The “Hawg Pen” where motorcycles can park is sponsored by Greater Midwest Exteriors and WashU CarWash.

It takes a team of volunteers to produce the weekly event, closing off streets, guiding cars to display parking spaces and managing the event. The volunteers include members of the chamber, local businesses as well as their friends and family lending a hand to make the summer evening stroll a success.

While it’s great entertainment for the visitors, the Cruise Nights also has a positive effect on local dining locations, as visitors stop for dinner, drinks and appetizers or grab ice cream cones to enjoy while they stroll. Each year there’s new destinations to explore.

“Local restaurants said Cruise Nights on Tuesday is like an extra Friday in the winter. This is something that really helps them,” Marsaglia said.

The Cruise Nights draws visitors from a large area, Tasha said, adding she’s chatting with folks from Downers Grove, Schaumburg and Morris, to name a few. For those driving to the Cruise Nights, free and nearby parking is available at Plainfield Central High School, the Plainfield Public Library and a lot off Oak and Des Plaines streets.

In addition to the activities with downtown businesses each week 10 Chamber-member businesses can register for a designated space in the downtown. Marsaglia said this provides a business, which doesn’t have an address in downtown Plainfield,

NEW BUSINESSES AND DEVELOPMENT IN PLAINFIELD

New destinations for dining and shopping continue to help propel Plainfield’s economic growth.

The anticipated opening of the new Cooper’s Hawk in Plainfield is slated for late spring or early summer, said Plainfield Economic Development Director Jake Melrose. The restaurant known for its wine flights and wine memberships is in the final construction phase on the Plainfield side of The Boulevard along Route 30. One of the features of the restaurant is the outdoor patio and wine tasting rooms adjacent to the Lily Cache Creek for a beautiful and serene location.

There are also new dining options in downtown Plainfield including The Clifton with a carefully cultivated menu that includes small dishes and wood-fired pizzas, Barrel & Vine, serving American fare and crafted cocktails and Dario Mercato which features freshly made pizza, panini, salads and fried appetizers.

Fans of Portillos will soon be able to enjoy their favorites when a drive-through location opens in a former PNC location next to Jewel-Osco on Illinois Route 59.

Melrose and his team are always working to bring new businesses to the community and he added there’s an opportunity for a new restaurant at the corner of Fox River and Lockport Street in downtown Plainfield that just came onto the market.

The recent closure of the Kohl’s and the closed Walmart are two of the locations Melrose’s team is working to find new businesses to take up the space. One of the aspects that may help bring new business is the development of the Wisconsin-based Woodman’s. The grocery store target opening is in 2026.

The community is watching for groundbreaking on the site of the new Woodman’s at 119th and Illinois Route 59. In addition to the construction of the new grocery store there will be considerable

Work is also expected to begin on the new Hawk Auto dealership north of Rolf and Illinois Route 59. A second dispensary was approved for Plainfield and work has started on the location at 12627 Illinois Route 59.

HOME BUILDING

In 2024, the village issued construction permits for more than 459 new homes, Melrose said.

Some of the new home construction projects include townhomes at Lockley Park and single-family homes at Greenbriar with the two projects connected by a green space. Autumn Glen is another townhome project underway in Plainfield just south of these two projects on Drauden Road.

Construction has started on Keller Farm at Wallin and Illinois Route 126 as well as Riverstone on 127th Street with each of these projects including single-family homes, ranch homes and townhomes.

WHAT’S UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN SHOREWOOD THIS YEAR

Home building continues to remain strong in Shorewood with several new residential projects underway in the community.

Lennar received approvals for a new development of single-family homes in the Auburn Chase development, south of Seil Road and west of Four Seasons Park. The project calls for two styles homes with approximately 277 home lots in the project. The project also includes two large ponds, a walking path, playground and private dog park. The work in the development is slated to start in early 2026.

Towne Center II is the development at Peyton Terrace and Wynstone Blvd. and is also by Lennar. It calls for single-family homes that connect to Towne Center I. The development would include a path for walking and biking.

The village staff is expecting to see concept plans for Shorewood Esplanade, a development north of Black Road. The expectation is for a single-family development with some duplexes and townhomes included in the designs.

In the retail sector, the Dollar Tree is the newest addition to Shorewood Market Street. Construction for this space is underway.

Legacy Fire Apparatus, located at the northeast corner of Earl and Geneva is

looking to expand its operations. The company, which sells and repairs fire trucks and other similar equipment is looking to triple their space to have more usable bays for repairs and create a dedicated transfer bay for new trucks.

A local veterinarian has started construction on a full-service veterinary clinic at the corner of west Jefferson Stret and Wynstone Blvd. This plan is under review with village trustees.

Creativity, determination and solid business plans will be on display as students from the Plainfield School District 202 INCubator Program make their final pitches before the community May 6.

The year-long business course paired high school students with members of the local business community who served as mentors and shared their advice and real-life experiences with the budding entrepreneurs.

The business course was offered at all four Plainfield District 202 high schools and on May 6 the top teams from each high school will deliver their pitch before a panel of judges and the community audience comprised of peers, parents and members of the Plainfield and Shorewood business communities.

In addition to the top five teams, representing the best of the five classes from the four high schools, the other teams from the four high schools will be onsite asking the community to vote

for their team prior to the start of the program. These teams are hoping their elevator pitch, made to the public, will garner them the votes they need to earn a “wild card” spot to join the top teams in presenting that evening, explained Dr. Kate Morris, District 202 Director of High School Curriculum and Instruction. The final team will learn roughly five minutes before the start of the evening events, if they have been selected to make their pitch, presenting excitement and showing just how important it is to be nimble when it comes to business.

“I think it will be really fun and exciting,” Morris said.

Pitch Night is more than a final exam or a chance to win a title, at stake are dollars to invest in the winning team’s project or a scholarship that can be used for continuing education.

“These products…I would be an investor. The students completely exceeded expectations,” Morris said.

She added that one group has established themselves as a limited liability company and joined the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber.

The word has gotten out about the program and Morris said next school year the program will double in size with the addition of four more classes.

“We’re going to need more volunteers,” Morris added.

District 202 leadership and instructors have invested in bringing the INCubator Program to the four schools, collaborating with members of the business community. The teachers are Ken Schoen, Breanna Roti, Kim O’Connell, Dan Redmore and Angel Haney.

Additionally, each school’s Community Champion served as a liaison between the school and the local business community, finding volunteers, mentors and coaches to assist students as they developed a product or solution, complete with a business plan.

Tasha Marsaglia, Executive Director for the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce served as a Community Champion for Plainfield North High School.

“I have had the privilege to watch these groups of students start with their ideas and turn them into real tangible products or services,” Marsaglia said.

“It has been such an amazing experience to see the support from the mentors, coaches and the community for this new program.”

Morris said the program the collaborations and partnerships were integral to the program’s success.

“I have been overwhelmed at how phenomenal the coaches, mentors and community members have been with the students, sharing real life experiences,” Morris added. “This would not have been possible without that partnership.”

In the waning weeks of the project Morris is seeking feedback from the business community and said initial responses show the business leaders also found the program extremely beneficial and productive.

“I have lived in the area over 20 years and I know we have great people, but this is so reaffirming,” Morris said.

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT DAY CELEBRATES YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

Troy 30-C students get hands-on civic education

Troy 30-C School District, in collaboration with the Village of Shorewood, celebrated Youth in Government Day on Thursday, Feb. 6. This educational initiative brought together 23 enthusiastic seventh- and eighth-grade students who demonstrated a keen interest in civic affairs.

Selected through an application process, these students showcased their passion for government by articulating their reasons for wanting to participate in this unique field trip. Throughout the day, they gained invaluable insights into the inner workings of local governance by exploring various departments within the village.

Under the guidance of Shorewood village officials and community leaders, the students delved into the functions of departments such as public works, administration, and parks and recreation. Through breakout sessions and handson activities, they learned firsthand how these departments collaborate to serve the community.

Twenty-three Troy Middle School students traveled to the Village of Shorewood to participate in Youth in Government Day in February.

A highlight of the day was a mock Village Board meeting, during which students applied their newfound knowledge and skills in a simulated legislative session. This practical exercise allowed them to experience the responsibilities and decisionmaking processes involved in local governance.

“We are thrilled to see such strong interest and enthusiasm from our students for Youth in Government Day,” said Sarah Wells, Director of Communications for Troy 30-C School District. “This initiative not only fosters a deeper understanding of civic duty but

also inspires future leaders who are eager to make a positive impact in their communities.”

The success of Youth in Government Day would not have been possible without the support and collaboration of the Plainfield Shorewood Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Shorewood. Their

commitment to education and community engagement has been instrumental in enriching this learning experience for students at Troy 30-C School District.
