Hennepin Library clerk Paula Taylor (left) and Putnam County Library Director Jay Kalman are ready to help fill the shelves of the Putnam County Food Pantry by taking part in the annual Food for Fines drive. Patrons can pay their overdue library fines by donating a non-perishable food item. Each item donated pays $1 in fines.
Want to get rid of that library fine? A non-perishable food item will help By Terri Simon

So you forgot to return that library book on time ... The result? You’ve accumulated a fine at your local library. While you could go in and open your pocketbook or your billfold,
some area libraries are offering an opportunity to get rid of that library fine while helping out others in your own community. From Nov. 7 through Nov. 19, the Food for Fines amnesty program offers those with library fines the chance to rid yourself of that late fee. All one has to do is bring in a canned or boxed non-perishable food donation to the library. Each donated food item pays $1 in overdue library fines. “It’s popular with most every-
body; it gives them a chance to redeem themselves,” Putnam County Library Director Jay Kalman said, adding those who wish to take care of a library fine with a food donation can do so at any of the six Putnam County Library branches. Likewise, the Jacobs Library at Illinois Valley Community College will be accepting food items to erase library fines.

GRANVILLE — While many schools close in observance of Veterans Day, the Putnam County School District sees more value in being in session and holding assemblies to honor veterans and learn of their sacrifices. Putnam County Superintendent Carl Carlson recently shared his thoughts on why staying in school on that day is more beneficial than another day off. “We believe it’s important for students to experience Veterans Day assemblies at school,” Carlson said. “All the schools in the district take time to educate our children about how fortunate we are for our freedoms we enjoy each day.” School curriculum covers the significant military history that helped shaped the nation and the world.
Veterans Day schedule at Putnam County schools 9 a.m. — High school gym - assembly. 10 a.m. — Primary school gym - student activities. 2 p.m. — Elementary school gym - student activities and assembly. 2:30 p.m. — Junior high school gym assembly honoring Veterans Day, band/chorus play. Carlson sees the assemblies as another educational opportunity, one with a personal touch. “We see it as a teachable moment that allows the school to recognize and demonstrate our appreciation for the service provided to our country. I’ve always enjoyed speaking to veterans who are able to attend our assemblies.

Showing their pride Village debuts new uniforms at board meeting By Dave Cook

GRANVILLE — Village President Doug Gimbal said they were “raising the bar” when board members agreed to wear uniforms — black polo shirts with silver stripes on the shoulders and down the sides. The shirts feature multi-colored, embroidered logos of a tree, the Granville Village Hall and the Granville water tower on the chest. The new shirts, debuted at the Nov. 1 board meeting, will be worn during meetings and by village employees. The shirts are expected to present a unified and more professional image to the public. In other business, board member Lucian Verda spoke about the possibility of concreting some of the driveway approaches on the 400-500 block of Main Street saying gravel and silt are being deposited onto the street by rain and sump pump flows. No action was taken. The village also accepted the one bid of $9,100 for the 1994 International truck. The veterans dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the American Legion hall. The dinner will feature chili, chicken dumpling soup, bread and butter, and desserts.
