HENNEPIN — Work continues on the $25 million reconstruction of the bridge that carries Interstate 180 traffic high above the Illinois River between Putnam and Bureau counties. Crews have been making repairs on the half-century-old I-180 bridge sporadically for the past several years, and now pretty much all but the supports need to be rebuilt. The project consists of a threeyear timeline. This year, the crew is rebuilding the eastbound half, and next year, workers will rebuild the westbound half. A painting project is planned for the third year. The bridge deck replacement work is being completed by Civil Constructors Inc. of Freeport. The bridge was built in 1968.

‘Ringing of the Bells’ marks the beginning of Constitution Week Celebrate the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America with the “Ringing of the Bells” in conjunction with “Bells Across America,” which marks the beginning of Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23. The Constitution of the United

States of America was signed on Sept. 17, 1787. Local churches, courthouses, veteran homes, city governments, city and county employees, 4-H Clubs, Boy and Girl Scouts, and other clubs such as Rotary and Mason members, individuals, schools, police stations, and firehouses will join other villages, towns and cities across the USA by ringing their bells simultaneously from coast to coast for two minutes commemorating the signing of the

Constitution. If you, as an individual would like to take part in the observation but do not own bells, use the bell ringer on your cell phone! Be creative, have fun and participate! Chief Senachwine Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution would like to invite all churches, schools, courthouses, fire houses, veterans’ homes, city governments and individuals to ring bells on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Ringing the bells at 4 p.m. EST in all time zones is encouraged, so that they are heard simultaneously from coast to coast. By ringing bells at 3 p.m. Central time, you are celebrating the American Constitution, along with millions of other Americans, from coast to coast. Annual fall sales come to the Marshall-Putnam SWCD HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam SWCD is holding its fall sales again.

Fish sales Due to unforeseen circumstances with COVID19 and other things, they have switched fish suppliers. They are still holding the fall fish sale, however, they will be offering a smaller variety of species that in past sales. This is only temporary. They hope to have a full range of species in the spring of 2021. With that being said, they will be offering a few new things to go with the fish. • Pond dye can be used to limit sunlight penetration and help limit algae and vegetation growth. They recommend one quart of blue and one quart of black per acre. • All seasons blend bacteria prouct is used to reduce the level of nutrients in the pond which are the primary culprit of excessive algae and vegetation growth. This product aids in the nutrient reduction process which leads to more manageable nutrient levels.

• Triton fish food is a 45% protein (fishmeal based) fish food that can be fed to fish to increase growth rates and enhance the overall health of the fish. • Texas Hunter fish feeder is the premium fish feeder available on the market and is operated by a programmable timer and powered off of a 12-volt battery and solar panel (all included). • Electrofishing surveys are conducted in existing ponds to determine fish population dynamics and provide recommendations for corrective or supplemental stockings. Herman Brothers Fisheries conducts more than 350 surveys each year throughout the Midwest helping people in many different ways. These services included in the survey include, but are not limited to, electrofishing (fish survey), vegetation/algae analysis, water quality analysis, depth analysis, etc.

GRANVILLE

GRANVILLE — Putnam County Rotary has announced that its annual “Road Apple Bingo” event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Boggios’ Little Mountain Apple Orchard on Route 71 in Granville. Squares on the grid can be purchased for $10 at Boggios and The Corner Store & Deli in Granville; from any Rotarian; or by ordering on Facebook or online. Players need not be present to win. A pony will be paraded up, down and across the grid until she selects a $1,000 winner by landing her “road apple” on the winning square. Cash prizes will also be drawn during the event. The funds raised will help PC Rotary continue vital community service projects despite COVID, including support of two Little Free Pantries in Standard and McNabb, sponsorship of Interact Clubs at PCHS and PCJH, continuation of the third grade Dictionaries Project,

Toys in the Pantry, Red Cross blood drives, several PCHS senior scholarships and post-prom Afterglow events when permitted to resume. An added grant project this year will support renovations at Freedom House, the local area residential shelter facility for victims of abuse. The club also helps support the Putnam County Community Center, the Backpack program and local causes benefiting homeless, youth, seniors and others. On a global scale, the club supports Rotary International efforts in polio erad-

ication; disaster response; health, environment, education and vocational training; water and sanitation; and world peace initiatives. PC Rotary has continued in strength and commitment despite the COVID-19 pandemic, meeting regularly by Zoom and telephone, and offering the option of attending one monthly meeting in person or remotely as well. More members and volunteers are needed, however, to continue these vital projects. To join or volunteer, contact PutnamCountyRotary@ gmail.com.

IVCC MEN’S GOLF PREVIEW

IVCC roster full of local talent BY KEVIN CHLUM kchlum@shawmedia.com The IVCC men’s golf team roster is made up entirely of local talent. The Eagles return NJCAA All-Region IV player Clay Wells, a Fieldcrest graduate, while adding four freshmen. Highlighting the freshman class is Putnam County graduate Ian Roach, a four-time IHSA Class 1A state qualifier and two-time NewsTribune Boys Golfer of the Year. Also joining the squad this year are Bureau Valley alumnus and Bureau County Republican Boys Golfer of the Year Trent DeVenney, Putnam County graduate and three-time state qualifier Ben Cyr, and 2019 Fieldcrest graduate Nick Mariotti, who qualified for state as a senior. “I’m excited to get the best local players to come play for IVCC,” thirdyear IVCC coach Sean Kennedy said.

“We have the NewsTrib Player of the Year; Ben Cyr, a three-time state qualifier; a Fieldcrest state qualifier in Nick Mariotti; and the BCR Player of the Year. It’s nice to keep our good, local talent at home at IVCC.” With so much talent, Kennedy has high hopes for the Eagles this fall, as he’s looking for a top two finish at the Region IV Tournament on Oct. 8-10 at PrairieView Golf Course in Byron to earn a trip to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Plymouth, Ind., on May 18-21. “Black Hawk returns everybody. They’ll be strong and easily the favorite to advance,” Kennedy said. “We think we’re right in the mix. This is the third year I’ve been coaching, and our goal this year is to try to get that second qualifying spot and get to the national tournament. Ian and Clay are a terrific 1-2 punch. We think we have a good chance.” Roach has played in IVCC’s No. 1 spot in its two events so far, with Wells playing No. 2 and Cyr in the No. 3 spot, with the fourth and fifth spots switching between Mariotti and DeVenney. “Ian is a solid, solid player,” Kenne-

dy said. “He has a lot of competitive junior tournament experience. The expectations are high for him. He drives himself pretty hard. He had a terrific showing at the Illinois Valley Men’s Championship with a top-5 finish. We hope for Ian to qualify for the national tournament if we don’t make it as a team.” The Eagles have already played one event and are in the midst of their second tournament. IVCC was declared co-champion of the Heartland Hawk Match Play Championship after the event was rained out midway through the championship round. The Eagles struggled Wednesday on the first day of the Skyhawk Classic by shooting a 338 in 55-degree, rainy, windy conditions. “We’re in fourth place going into (Thursday),” Kennedy said. “We shot poorly. The wind did not help us. It’s disappointing but it’s a learning experience. We had a 36-hole day on Tuesday. The kids got home late on the bus and still had to get their homework done and do their laundry. College life is definitely different than high school life. We’ll learn from it.”

The Eagles have eight events left on the schedule. “Our schedule this year is constricted,” Kennedy said. “We can’t go out of state. We can’t stay overnight in hotels. We do get to play two PGA venues in TPC Deere Run and Cog Hill Dubsdread. “The golf team is thrilled that (IVCC president) Dr. (Jerry) Corcoran and the college is giving us the opportunity to compete. We’re the only team at IVCC playing this fall. We’re happy (athletic director) Cory (Tomasson) and (athletic administrative assistant) Sue (Harding) are doing all the extra work to give us the chance to compete this fall.”

In time almost forgotten, the Midwest and upper South were once home to thousands of Americans who lived and worked on the rivers as sharecroppers, fishermen, mussel shellers, button cutters, traveling minstrels and even moonshiners. Work was their life, and the work was hard. But though they were the backbone of the industry in cities like Muscatine and Cairo, they played too, enjoying the music of Memphis and St. Louis along with their ways. Audiences can join Dennis Stroughmatt on an exciting voyage of discovery using both performance and presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Hennepin library. The presentation will also be on Facebook.

Don’t Be Le in the Dark!

HENRY

The Marshall-Putnam River Conservancy District sponsored an “At Home” Conservation Camp this year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, things were drastically different than in years past. With the help of the University of Illinois Extension - Marshall-Putnam 4-H Office and the Marshall-Putnam Soil and Water Conservation District, 45 kits were assembled and distributed for kids aged 6-11 in the Marshall and Putnam County area. The kits were advertised and as quickly as they

could be asked for — they were gone! Included in the kit was a book called “Exploring Nature Activity Book for Kids” by Kim Andrews, a Grow-AMaze kit, a Sun Print Kit, Nature Circles Outdoor adventure cards, a pop-up bug house, a pocket Naturalist Guide, and games, coloring pages and adventure stories provided by the Extension Office. People were then asked to send in photos of the kids doing something with the kit. They will be showcased on our Facebook page as well as our website.

Restaurant reviews

Cedar Point home to a gem for tavern favorites Just about every Illinois Valley resident has their favorite spot for tavern foods, but one of the more hidden gems has been hiding in plain sight for more than 50 years. June Bug’s Corral Inn in Cedar Point is just far enough out of the way to escape the notice of those not in the know, but once you try it, you’re going to want to add it to your list of local favorites. You’re not going here for fusion cuisine or exotic ingredients (well, turtle is exotic to some of us), but when you’re in the mood for good conversation, a few cheap beers and some outstanding made-fromscratch Illinois Valley tavern favorites, this is where you want to be. My gang started out with a couple appetizers; at $5 a pop, you’re unlikely to find a better deal, and there’s a large handful of choices so you can pick and mix among you to sample a little of everything. We went with fried zucchini and corn nuggets. I’ll be the first to admit corn nuggets wouldn’t have been my pick, but I was surprised to see that rather than the fat balls of fried dough studded with a couple corn kernels most places serve, these were sweet little bite-sized nuggets of perfectly fried sweet corn kernels without fillers. The zucchini was batter-dipped and fried to golden perfection and had an outstanding texture, contrasting the sweet fresh garden grown taste of the vegetable with a crispy coating. I highly recommend you try it if it’s on the menu when you go. For entrees, we chose fried chicken, fried walleye, chicken Parmesan and fried turtle. The fried chicken was outstanding and compares favorably with any of the cult-favorite fried chicken recipes in the area. A halflight dinner with potato and salad is $12. If you go, make sure to reserve your order early – on a busy night, it’s going to sell out fast.

LEFT: For $5, it’s hard to choose just one appetizer. Our selection this outing included sweet fresh corn nuggets and perfectly battered fried zucchini. RIGHT: If you’re a fan of family style chicken, June Bug’s chicken Parm is a solid choice, combining the flavors of their battered white meat chicken with a heaping helping of homemade spaghetti in meat sauce on the side. Don’t tell your mom the sauce is just as good as hers. My friends were impressed, giving their dishes high marks. The walleye had a light cornmeal coating that complements the fish without overwhelming the texture. And the turtle, despite being an amphibian on a plate, was the same golden brown as the chicken and came recommended by the person who or-

dered it and the other person in our group willing to try it. I’ve heard turtle has seven different flavors depending on the part you’re eating, so consider that if you try it. The chicken Parm, for big fans of family style chicken, is a perfect choice, coming with a hand-battered chicken breast, no frozen cutlet

here, and a generous pile of spaghetti smothered in homemade meat sauce. The service was fast, friendly and accurate, the prices couldn’t be beat, and the food was all made from scratch and served piping hot. If you’re looking for your new favorite hole-in-the-wall spot for food like mom makes,

pull up a seat at June Bug’s, you’ll soon be a regular. • The Mystery Diner is an employee at Shaw Media Illinois. The diner’s identity is not revealed to restaurant staff before or during the meal. If the Mystery Diner cannot recommend the establishment, we will not publish a story.
