GRANVILLE/LOSTANT — Effective Sept. 15, Senate Bill 100 (SB100) will bring changes to how schools handle students facing disciplinary measures. One of the most significant changes is the elimination of zero tolerance policies; administrators will now have to provide additional means of intervention, support and counselling before a student is suspended or expelled. The rationale of this new legislation is the students often being removed from schools for behavioral issues are those who need the structure and discipline school provides the most. Therefore, schools should

make every effort to help troubled students change their conduct while allowing them to continue their education. Bullying, and it’s millennial counterpart — cyberbullying, continues to be a concern. Putnam County (PC) Superintendent Carl Carlson discussed how students are being taught the responsibilities of social media and the changes involved with SB100. “SB 100 will change a few procedures; the biggest piece will be restorative corrective measures. PC has done a lot in the way of providing information, training and problem solving to meet student needs over the years,” Carlson said.

Ivan Baker thinks of economic development like a garden with a limited amount of time to sell your produce before it dies. Baker is the recently hired chief executive officer Ivan Baker of the Economic Development Corporation of North Central Illinois; a newly-found organization marketing the valuable resources of Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties to the right investors outside the tri-county area. In economic development, Baker said we cannot think about ourselves but about our children and grandchildren. “The leadership here is optimistic about being realistic and achieving goals, and we’re trying to create more investment, expand the tax base and create more jobs,” he said. “More people would stay in the area if there were better jobs and an opportunity to raise a family.”

BUREAU JUNCTION — James McGuire, commander of the Rhode Island Department of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), traveled a long way to search a hot, humid and heavily-wooded hilltop containing an

abandoned cemetery. His search was successful, and he finally made a tangible connection to his Civil War ancestor, along with many others in his family tree. McGuire became a commander in the SUVCW this year, the same year its national encampment was being held in Springfield. This is also the year he learned his ances-
