PRINCETON — In honor of International Overdose Awareness Day, Community Partners Against Substance Abuse hosted educational events about opioids and the disease of addiction Thursday evening. The group had one session in Putnam County at the Emergency Management Agency building and then traveled to the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department in Princeton for a second session to raise awareness about the alarming trends of opioid usage. Longtime CPASA member Deb Wood, who is also the EMS coordinator at Perry Memorial Hospital, provided a presentation about the disease of addiction, the signs and symptoms of overdose, prevention strategies for overdose and also gave a live demonstration of Narcan administration. She said one of the gateways to heroin use is addiction to prescription painkillers. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 44 people die every day in the U.S. from overdose of prescription painkillers. The 2013-14 National Survey on drug use and health shows 50.5 percent of people who misused prescription painkillers got them from a relative or friend; and 22.1 percent got them from their doctor. Wood said in many cases, heroin is the next step after painkillers, because it gives the same high. The drug is also much cheaper than pills. It can be purchased for $5 a pop. Wood gave a few startling statistics about the use of heroin during her presentation. She said 4.8 million people in the world have used the drug. The average age of users ranges from 12 to 49. Wood said 212,000 people 12 or older have used heroin for the first time in the past year and 435,000 people became regular users of heroin in the past month.
