Jackson visits Capitol Hill Trip focuses on EMS support By Ken Schroeder kschroeder@putnamcountyrecord.com

MCNABB — March 26 was the fifth annual EMS on the Hill Day in Washington, D.C. It is a chance for personnel from emergency medical services to speak to

senators and representatives about the needs for EMTs and paramedics and ways Congress can help ensure those services continue. Three different issues brought personnel to Capitol Hill, and among the emergency personnel

in attendance was Putnam County Emergency Medical Services Chief Andy Jackson, participating for his third time in the program. “The EMS H.R. 809 is the big one we’re trying to get congressmen to sign on as co-sponsors,” Jackson said. “Right now, EMS doesn’t

have an actual home in the federal government. We’re split between the Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security. What we’re trying to do is go in with Human Health Services and be under their umbrella for money purposes and grants.”

Emergency medical services became available during the 1960s in places throughout the country, and though many EMS operations work out of the same buildings as local fire departments they do not fall under the same jurisdictions. Fire departments currently fall under the

purview of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which Jackson said is a great source for grants for assistance. A common misconception is EMS programs are part of a fire department, but Jackson said that’s not the case.

No longer running bare PCJH track team gets uniforms B y Ken Schroeder kschroeder@putnamcountyrecord.com

MCNABB — Among the many award-winning sports teams in the Putnam County School system, the junior high track and field team has been overlooked in many ways. During the last couple of years, members of the team have placed in conference and sectional meets with 30 athletes qualifying for the Illinois Elementary School Association state track meet and bringing home four medals from the 2013 state meet. They also have been competing without uniforms.

The school restarted the track team three years ago and up to this point have had to compete in PE uniforms with nylon jerseys. The team was also not in the uniform rotation in which the school replaces sports uniforms over the years. Thanks to the efforts of the athletes and an anonymous donor, that’s no longer the case. Toni Lawley was instrumental in raising money for band uniforms last year, so when the track coaches were trying to gather funds they naturally came to her.

The projects will be managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation. In Bureau County, the structural steel on the Interstate 180 bridges over Route 26 and Bureau Creek west of Hennepin will be cleaned and painted. All States Painting Inc. of Alexander was the lowest of six bidders at $699,798. Another I-180 bridge in Putnam County over the Illinois River at Hennepin will be cleaned
