Granville OKs motor fuel tax resolution By Ken Schroeder

GRANVILLE — The Granville Village Board made it official at the Tuesday, April 21, meeting when they voted unanimously to pass the Motor Fuel Tax resolution earmarking $96,000 for street repairs and resurfacing. The figure includes resurfacing McCoy Street from
Route 71 north to the railroad tracks with asphalt, something Village President Doug Gimbal is still opposed to. “My stand is I still don’t agree with it,” Gimbal said. Gimbal has pushed for resurfacing the street with concrete, but other board members felt the extra money it would cost was something they could not justify in the village’s
financial condition. Village Engineer Mike Richetta told the board the allocation would use all of the funds currently in the account. He noted the numbers for the sealcoat patching could be reduced for the summer project. In other news, the board: • Learned of the money lost in the March Motor Fuel Tax revenues due
to the state’s $50 million sweep in the budget passed by the Illinois General Assembly. Richetta calculated the village’s loss at approximately $1,500. Although the measure was only set for one month, Richetta noted such a sweep “gets easier the second time.” • Approved retaining Hopkins and Associates for the village’s annual audit. Hopkins quoted a
price not to exceed $6,000 for this year’s audit. • Approved a donation to the Illinois Valley Community College summer programs for $2,100. The programs are set up to teach children the healthy aspects of being active. Last year, the programs served 300 students. The sessions start from 9 to 11 a.m. May 30 and run for four weeks. • Agreed to help Gran-
ville children take swimming lessons at the Hennepin Park District. Sessions are $33 per student. The village agreed to pay for one session. • Approved allowing Aqua Back Flow to administer the cross connection control surveys for the village at a cost of $1.35 per household. • Discussed the replacement of defective fire hydrants in the village.

MARK — The Mark Village Board did a walkthrough of the Saint Paul Street project during the board meeting Tuesday, April 21. The repairs were started last year with progress on the project running ahead of schedule before winter set in. The board members made the walkthrough to decide on what repairs remain before the project is completed this spring. Area resident Merle Norris gifted the board with a set of photos. The photos were of various construction projects around Mark that have been completed over the years. In other action, the board: • Announced repairs on the lift station on the north end of Milwaukee Street will be starting soon. • Opened bids for a new tractor and mower. Board members decided to seek more pricing using other tractor and equipment combinations. • Reminds residents electronic recycling will be available June 13 at Mark Village Hall. Only Putnam County residents will be able to use the service and identification will be checked. • Will swear in the elected officials from the consolidated election at the next board meeting on Tuesday, May 5. With a little help from my friend Roger Barnard of Granville knows this time of year can be long when working the fields. So Derby, Barnard’s 12-week-old puppy (standing just outside of the tractor cab), keeps him company in the cab of the tractor that he drives for Luke Holly of Standard. Barnard was plowing a field owned by Phil and Mary Edgerley of rural Granville.
Remembering Jeanne Alleman GRANVILLE — Putnam County has lost one of its best. Jeanne Alleman, 85, of Granville died on Sunday, April 19, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. A person who never seemed to slow down, Alleman was a second-grade teacher and taught at Granville Grade School, Hopkins Elementary and
Swaney Grade School. She was a Putnam County School Board member for 12 years and volunteered with the Marshall-Putnam Fair, 4-H, the Putnam County Republicans and Psi Omega Volunteer Women’s Club. For her volunteer efforts, she was awarded the Gallery of Ageless Achievement Award by the state of Illi-
nois in 1999. Linda Walter of Streator was a second-grade teacher who worked with Alleman and remembers her well. “I always thought of her as shining,” Walter said. “She always had this positive aura around her. You never heard a negative word from her on one of her children. She was a
very giving person for her students, fellow teachers and everyone around her.” Walter’s daughter attended school with Alleman as a teacher. She told her mother, “Of all the teachers I ever had, Jeanne had the biggest impact on me.”
