Board discusses need for clarity in drug and alcohol policy By Dave Cook

news@putnamcountyrecord.com

GRANVILLE — When Granville village attorney Brad Popurella asked if anyone at the village board meeting had any suggested corrections or changes they wanted in regards to the drug and alcohol policy, it provided the debate of the evening — vagueness or specifics? Trustee Randy Borio began the March 7 discussion by suggesting anyone who gets a paycheck from the village, with the exception of the contracted village attorney and village engineer, should be subject to

the testing policy, including board members. Trustee Tina Dolder said she thought that was the policy’s intention, but Borio replied he’d like it spelled out; he added the disciplinary action portion of the policy was far too vague and without any clearly defined steps of graduated procedures. “I think it depends on the situation,” Dolder said. “But it’s not spelled out. In a situation like this, we need to make sure we cover as many of the bases as we can,” Borio said. Dolder responded every scenario can’t be included.

Borio suggested it address the different degrees of seriousness with accidents. He described a theoretical accident involving serious bodily harm or death where an employee could be subject to termination and then a minor situation with no harm and a first offense where the employee could be informed of treatment options and encouraged to seek treatment. “We need to be clear. The more clear this is the better off we’ll be. I’d like to see it spelled out for a first offense, a second offense and a third offense,” Borio said.

Seeds of spring HENNEPIN — “Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it’s off to the garden I go,” sang Barb Dahlbach in a happy burst of song celebrating the beginning of gardening season and the start of another year of the University of Illinois Extension’s award-winning Healthy Gardening program. Visiting the Hennepin Library on the evening of March 9 with fellow master gardener Mary May of LaSalle County, the two experienced gardeners were on hand to share advice and answer the questions of local gardeners as part of “From Seeds to Harvest.” “From Seeds to Harvest” is the portion of the larger Healthy Gardening program which encourages residents to feed their families fresh and healthy food by growing their own gardens. Throughout the entire season, Master Gardeners are available to help ensure a bountiful harvest. Early in the season, programs are held throughout the area which teach how to properly plan and prepare a garden, along with the possible challenges and how to overcome them. The next step of the program is to visit area food pantries to distribute seeds and plants.
