A wider Power Plant Road Work scheduled to begin this spring By Dave Cook

HENNEPIN — It was Valentine’s Day, and it appeared as though many had chosen an evening of romance over county governance. While all the board mem-

project estimate was $1.25 million and the rewarded bid was from Advance Asphalt for $1.19 million. Sloan said the work is scheduled to begin in late spring and should be completed by mid-summer. Sloan also said the county had received final payment from LaSalle County for last year’s box culvert project in Magnolia. “The total cost of the project was $434,423,” Sloan said. “LaSalle County provided half of the construction cost at $192,080. bers were present, the evening meeting of the Putnam County Board on Feb. 14 moved quickly through the agenda because of the light attendance. Before delivering his report, highway department engineer Pat Sloan joked he’d already taken his wife out for an early dinner. He then informed the board the county had only received one bid for the widening and asphalt overlay project on Power Plant Road from Hennepin to the power plant on 800 East Road. The

from the state’s Township Bridge Program at $181,153. Magnolia Township paid $30,595 and Putnam County $30,595. The additional cost was for engineering to develop the construction plans and bidding.” He also discussed the status of the Bottom Road bridge project near Route 89. The bridge is in very poor condition, according to Sloan, and is posted at less than half of the normal weight limits saying, “Basically, a loaded truck is not allowed to go over it.”

The project is still in the initial stages of engineering studies, and the county has currently spent $50,000 toward its’ design for a replacement of the bridge. It will include work on Route 89, such as an additional turn lane for northbound traffic, although the nearby Route 89 bridge project spanning the river has slowed the progress on Bottom Road. Sloan said he expects the project to be underway by 2018.

Exchange program provides cultural experiences for students and teachers By Dave Cook

GRANVILLE — Often the best way to learn is through hands-on experiences. The Sisterhood of Schools is an exchange program pairing students and teachers from Northern Illinois with students and teachers in Argentina. Each year the groups spend six

weeks with each other in their respective schools and countries. Sponsored by Rotary International, the program takes advantage of the seasonal differences between the hemispheres. The Argentinian team, whose summer is now, arrived in Putnam County (PC) on Jan. 23 and will be here until March 5. The team

from Illinois will travel to Argentina in June and will experience six weeks of South American winter and culture The program provides a cross-cultural experience for not only the traveling team members, but also for the entire school. Participants share their culture and experiences with students, staff, family members

and Rotarians throughout their travels. This year’s visiting team from Argentina consists of educator Vanesa Tello; Francisco Manrique, 17, who enjoys studying mechanical engineering; and Arsenio Culaciati, 17, who enjoys studying agronomy.

Argentinian Arsenio Culaciati (from left), Putnam County resident Ryan Caulfield and Argentinian Francisco Manrique are now close friends thanks to the Rotary International “Sisterhood of Schools” exchange program. Caulfield will travel to Argentina this summer for six weeks to attend school, and he’ll be staying with the families of Culaciati and Manrique. HENNEPIN — While residents are currently safe from the dreaded buzz of mosquitoes, the weather will soon be warm enough to hatch the first wave of Hennepin’s most common and unwelcome visitor. Knowing this is inevitable, the Hennepin Village Board has taken the first step toward beginning a mosquito abatement program. Clarke, a mosquito control service, sent representative Chris Novak to the Feb. 15 board meeting to give a condensed version of his usual four-hour program. Novak began by saying Clarke is constantly working toward being as “green and organic” as possible, and environmental safety is of utmost concern. Though the Zika virus has received a lot of press, Novak said there’s little concern of its carrier arriving in Illinois because of the cooler temperatures. He gave a quick overview of the multitude of mosquito species, their attributed diseases and which of the 92 local species were of most concern. He explained the evolution of mosquito control and said in the past, the liquid sprayed was up to 95 percent active ingredients and “our current sprays are typically only 2 percent active ingredients.”
