Osceola Public Library delivers fun, free summer activities to area families Programs rival services found throughout the Metro in both engagement and kid appeal By HILARY FERRAND
stopped by with some of the creepiest, crawliest creatures around. Parents can pick up a schedule of events at the library or download it online, along with the rules regarding the library’s summer reading contests. Every week, there’s going to be something new for children to enjoy. Professional performers like Duffy Hudson, the Hanson Family and Magician Keith West will be stopping by over the next few weeks. Regular health, crafting and learning workshops will fill the summer with plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning and staying active. The staff has done a superb job of creating programs suitable for toddlers through middle school students and

For the size of the population it serves, the Osceola Public Library offers an impressive number of programs for kids and adults, but it’s the quality of those activities that makes it a treasure among libraries throughout the state. This summer’s “Building a Better World” series combines traditional summertime reading programs with engaging presenters, hands-on activities, crafting, games that get kids up and moving and more. There is something for every child (and child at heart) at the library this June and July in Osceola. Wednesday, June 7, Dan Wardell was in town as part of the IPTV Read-

Restoration Ranch is one of few places in South Central Iowa people can go when they’ve hit rock bottom. Now, thanks to generous grants from several organizations in the community, the charity has a facility capable of housing six residents at a time as they work toward reclaiming their independence. The public is invited to a ribbon cutting and open house 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the shelter located at 2746 Kansas Street. “Right now we can house up to six men, providing long-term housing that gives them the opportunity for a true life change,” said Restoration Ranch Board Vice President Kim White. “They might be struggling with drugs, alcohol, a family situation, abuse, homelessness, whatever.” The program, started by Brad and Michelle Davis in May 2011, has helped 20 men get on their feet through the years, long before there was a shelter in place to help with transitions. “A lot of the bases we have even now is what was learned along the way,” said White. “They’ve had some not so great situations, but

have the ability to provide quick and convenient access to immunizations. Feldman is bringing some new services to town with her as well. First on the list? Dr. Comfort shoe fittings help patients with foot and balance problems find a comfortable shoe with the support — and style — that’s needed. Therapeutic shoes have come a long way from the white clunky sneakers of the 70s and 80s. Today, even sandals are available. “I already have some background training in this, but I want to do more in regards to what kinds of feet problems people have and then also being able to fit people for shoes that have comfort inserts. Medicare will even pay for that for them, which is really nice.”

some overwhelming successes too.” A key component to the program is religious participation, which sometimes is an obstacle for potential residents. “We found out it works much better if faith is one of the components,” said White. “We ask that they get involved in church. It doesn’t have to be a church we specify.” However, there are options for those who want to remain religion free. “We just need to know in
advance. It’s important to be clear upfront,” she said, noting the group works with secular providers in some situations, for instance, in offering residents mental health and addiction counseling. Participants coming from bad situations have a hard road ahead of them, said White, and they need services like Restoration Ranch to make the most of their efforts. “When they come out of rehab, or even out of jail, where do they have to go?

If they go right back to their old friends or old hang outs it’s not long before they’re back to what got them into trouble to begin with,” said White. “A young man just left that came to us from jail. He was with us for about five months. He just got his HiSET. Now he’s in his own apartment.” Saturday, the group will be thanking the Clarke County Development Corporation, South Central Iowa Community Foundation, Clarke County Hospital and others OPEN | 2
Anne Feldman, the new full-time pharmacist at Medicap Pharmacy, 214 S. Main St., is a Chicagoan transplant with a taste for small-town living. “Osceola was the perfect opportunity for me,” said Feldman. “People were very friendly, everyone knows each other and is able to talk to one another. It’s more than just a business relationship.” Feldman moved from a big city suburb to Drake University, where she ultimately completed her Doctor of Pharmacy. As the pharmacy manager, she’ll be available to answer questions on prescriptions, and she’ll
