line in and around Osceola to the tune of $12.2 million. The new line will ensure customers retain services throughout winter. That said, a good portion of the increase is needed because of a new $645 million facility, the Marshalltown Generating Station. The 650-megawatt power station runs on natural gas and is one of the most efficient in the nation. It is the only Iowa structure to win the Envision Platinum Award and has drastically decreased pollution rates while making it easier to use wind- and solar-generated electricity. In support Supporters, like Ken Sagar, president of the Iowa Federation of Labor, pointed to the economic benefits of Alliant-IPL’s recent upgrades. “These investments are investments in the future of this state. If we want to compete for jobs in the future — and not just any jobs, but high-quality jobs — we need a world-class energy system,” said Sagar. “ The Marshalltown Generation Station... has been an economic shot in the arm for Marshall County. The Iowa Utilities Board held a public comment meeting 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Clarke High School auditorium on the rate increase proprosed by Alliant Energy-Interstate Power and Light Company (Alliant-IPL). Residential bills would increase an average of 12.5 percent, or $14.26 per month, and commercial bills an average of 11.6 percent, or $33.04 per month. Executives from the electric company defended the request, saying its rates have remained the same since 2010 while they’ve made expensive upgrades creating a more reliable, environmentally friendly electricity grid. “On average, our customers are seeing 25 percent fewer outages, and each outage is, on average, 30 percent shorter,” said Alliant-IPL President Doug Kopp. “An example of this is our recent work on a transformer in the north part of Osceola. Our work on this transformer cost about $700,000.” Between June and September 2017, the company also plans to replace 11 miles of gas transmission

Is that how we are to honor their sacrifices?” he asked. “Kindness is a watchword we should all bear in our hearts... because kindness is an attribute from which no stronger bonds will ever be developed and no greater measure of devotion will ever germinate.” Its presence was felt this holiday weekend as volunteers turned out to raise the flags and take them down

again Tuesday night, to help with the ceremony, and to attend to show their support to the service members lost, as well as to their families. Memorial Day is one of three major military holidays held during the year. It falls on the last Monday in the month of May. Others include Veterans Day, Nov. 11, dedicated to all those who have served in the military, and Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday in May, for all active service men and women.

The atmosphere at the Clarke County 4-H Fairgrounds Event Center Thursday night was nothing short of electric as Gov. Kim Reynolds’ friends, family and neighbors waited for Iowa’s first female governor to arrive. In two hours time, roughly 500 guests would filter through to see Reynolds and acting Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg in action. “The enthusiasm is real,” said Ray Gasser of Adams County, who ventured out with his wife Elaine to congratulate Reynolds. “She’s the right one to be the first.” The majority of people packing the event center knew Reynolds from school or during the 14 years she worked in the Clarke County Treasurer’s Office. Gasser know Reynolds from her time as a Senator. “She’s great to work with,” he said. One look around the event center was enough to drive the point home. how proud her community is to see her succeed. Many of those in attendance had first-hand experience working with Reynolds at one time or another. “We were in Republican Women with her together for years,” said Sharon Dunfee. “She always had that wonderful bubbly personality. We pretty much knew she would do anything she set her mind to do. We all had a lot of fun together.” “I think her tenacity is one of the great things about her,” said Joyce Neal. “And to always see that the job gets done and is completed — and completed right.” Reynolds made an early impression on the community, rising up through sports in school and landing a job in the county courthouse where providing top-tier customer service helped her advance quickly in the ranks, eventually beOST photo by HILARY FERRAND ing elected Clarke County Gov. said Kimball. “She’s everybody’s governor so she can’t play favorites, but,” said Kimball, “she’s someone who understands what we want in this area.” The ice cream social held in Reynolds’ honor was the brainchild of Kimball and Helen Saylor-Kimes. Dozens of businesses and community leaders stepped up to make the night a success, including Hy-Vee, Fareway, Subway, Kale’s Funeral Home, Mayberry’s, Flowers N More, Saylor Realty, Milton Watkins, SIMCO, Solutions, Kimball & Associates, Chuck DeVos, Liz Simpson, Andrew Clark, Clarke County Fair Board, KSOI 91.9 FM, American Legion Davis-Pence Post 69, Clarke County Development Corporation, Clarke County Publishing and countless other volunteers. “Hopefully I can get through this without crying, which is probably not going to happen,” said Reynolds at the start of her speech. “From the moment I turned the corner, pulled in here and saw the cars I thought, ‘I love this county.’ I love the fact I was raised in rural Iowa and that you’ve always been there for me.”
