In the most basic of terms, the Teacher Leadership Compensation System (TLCS) is teachers helping other teachers to help students. That means, when it comes to education, they’re all in this together. “One of the reasons it was created was to give teachers who wanted to be leaders an Bahls opportunity to do that without having to step out of the teacher role because, traditionally, the only way you could be a leader in a district is to become an admin,” said Jean Bahls, Clarke curriculum director/TLCS coordinator. “And, there’s lots of teachers who don’t want to lose that tie to the classroom and kids and other teachers.” What is TLCS? According to Iowa Depart-

ment of Education, TLCS rewards effective teachers with leadership opportunities and higher pay, attracts promising new teachers with competitive starting salaries and more support and fosters greater collaboration for all teachers to learn from each other. The philosophy of the system is multi-pronged, but it essentially means improving student learning requires improving the instruction they receive each day. TLCS seeks to do this by empowering school districts’ best teachers to lead the effort. Through the system, teacher leaders take on extra responsibilities, including helping colleagues analyze data and fine tune instructional strategies, as well as coaching and co-teaching. Special coaches Each school has an agenda or goal to come up with what they think should be the positions in the TLCS program. “We have tons of knowledge and expertise in our buildings. Going out strong Mundy reflects on SWCC shooting team’s success before taking job at Grand View University By AMY HANSEN

For Charlie Mundy’s last year as coach of Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC) shooting team, he wanted his team to go out on top. The first year the team traveled to nationals, it placed 15th in the nation. “Everybody’s like, ‘SWCC who? What’s SWCC?’ They thought we were from the southwest, like from Arizona or something,” Mundy said. “So, when they found out we were from Iowa, I have a lot of pride in that.” Mundy has taken a job with Grand View University in Des Moines to start a shooting team. He will start in the fall. This means he will also leave behind the high school’s carpentry trades program. National competition SWCC’s shooting team didn’t disappoint in their

final year with Mundy as coach. They recently traveled to the national competition in San Antonio, Texas. Last year, the team placed sixth in the nation in trap shooting. This year, the team placed seventh in the nation. However, the team did improve its skills because the students hit seven more targets than the previous year. SWCC was competing against teams from big universities such as Texas A&M, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia and military academies like West Point. Trenton Cheers shot 100 out of 100 during the competition. Mundy said only 12 students were able to accomplish this feat. That score put Cheers in the shoot-offs for a national title, but he was eliminated early in the rounds. Cheers
