A celebration of life By HILARY FERRAND OST news editor hferrand@osceolaiowa. com
Erick Reyna was 10 years old when his mother, Evangelina Perez, moved her family to Osceola. Erick and his two sisters, Adriana and Linda, flourished in Clarke Community Schools, making friends with other students and with their teachers. Erick graduated in 2012, but still came back once in awhile to visit with his favorites. “He was friendly with everybody,” said sister Adriana. “You asked him a favor, he wouldn’t say no. He would do anything as long as you put gas in his car or gave him food.” Erick was known for his infectious personality, earning him the nickname Bobblehead and many friends. “Erick was a wonderful person,” said local mom
Nancy Watson. “He was very good friends with my children.” Noe Flores came to Osceola from New Mexico a few years later, meeting and marrying Erick’s cousin, and starting a family. “Noe and Erick were really good friends,” said Noe’s widow, Alicia, a d d i n g Flores the young men would often get together to listen to music, drive around and hang out together. The two shared an interest in Spanish music, with bands like Los Tucanes del Tijuana, Los Inquietos and Pegaso, and in treating life like a celebration. “We would spend all summer hanging out, cruis-
ing around Osceola,” said friend Cierra Lewis. “[It] was always an adventure.” “My teenage years had nothing but good memories with them. They were great to be around always making jokes and just messing around,” she said. “You can’t really put into words how much they meant to alot of people.” For all the fun the pair managed to have, they were also serious about their roles as family men. Noe’s twins – a boy and a girl – were 9 when he passed away. His youngest was just three years old, and Noe had been her stay-at-home dad. “He’s the one who potty trained her,” said Alicia. “Noe was really dedicated. He would help with anything.” The week before he was killed, their family had gone on a vacation to Omaha together. They often went out to movies or for quick trips

to Des Moines. Erick had a child as well, a little boy. “ H i s m a i n thing was his son,” said Adriana. “He’s five right Reyna now.” He never stopped looking forward to visits with his son. Noe and Erick often acted like the young men they were. They loved dancing, music, cars and playing video games. “He was 22, like a teenager,” said Adriana. While this short chapter of their lives coming to an end, it’s clear it’s not the end of their stories. Both both have plenty of loved ones to carry on their memories — and their examples of how to create lives worth living.
Richard Ryan Lamb Carson, 40, of Osceola has been found guilty of two counts of Murder in the First Degree in the shooting deaths of Noe Flores, 27, and Erick Reyna, 22. Sentencing is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Clarke County Courthouse. The prosecution opened the second day of testimony on Tuesday by calling firearms expert Victor Murilla, a criminalist with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (D.C.I.). Murillo has been a firearms specialist withD.C.I. since 1989. Murillo confirmed all 16 bullets found in Carson’s truck were a match to the bullets found in Flores and Reyna, and that they came from the gun police recovered from a storm drain outside the home of Tracy Kay Johnson, 45, of Osceola, Carson’s former girlfriend. That firearm was identified as a .357 Taurus seven-shot revolver with a single- and double-action trigger pull. A photo of Carson was displayed showing him holding a weapon very similar to the Taurus, and earlier witnesses testified they thought it was the same gun. Michael Adams, for the defense, argued that wasn’t the case and the weapon in the photo was, in fact, a Smith & Wesson. Medical examination Dr. Michele Catellier, associate state medical examiner, took the stand to shed light on the victims’ injuries. Most notable were the bullet holes in Reyna’s arm and hand and the atypical bullet wounds in his cheek and forehead. “It’s entirely possible, if not probable, that his hand was in front of his face at the time of the gunshots,” said Catellier. DES MOINES — Osceola native Eli Stover stood just past the finish line of the Drake Relays Road Race half marathon. He was there to greet his longtime girlfriend Kara Palczewski. But this was no ordinary meeting after she completed a 13.1 mile run through the streets in and around Drake University. There was something special in Stover’s right hand. A diamond ring. The 1997 Clarke Community High School graduate greeted her with an embrace. A few moments later, he dropped to a knee, opened up the box that held the ring. In disbelief, she started tearing up. He asked her to marry him. She said yes. They shared a deep kiss and hug. The two Grimes residents are on the road to marriage. “I’m a little shocked right now,” Palczewski said. Over the final block of the Road Race, friends held up a series of signs saying Kara, Will, You, Marry. Stover held the me. She saw the first one and the next one. Eventually she put them together. “I saw it. A friend is hilariously loud. I knew it wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary to see a sign,” Palczewski said. “I sort of started putting two and two together.” When Stover heard his former high school friend was now the director of the Drake Relays a plan was hatched. 1997 Clarke Community High School graduate Eli Stover and his girlfriend Kara Palczewski share a kiss after Stover proposed to her after she crossed the finish line of the half marathon at the Drake Relays Road Race as part of the Drake Relays on April 29 in Des Moines.
Stover contacted first-year Drake Relays director, and 1998 Clarke graduate Blake Boldon about proposing at the Drake Relays Road Race half marathon. Boldon put Stover in contact with the right people at the Drake Relays and the plans were set up. Having Boldon directing the Drake Relays helped put Stover at ease about the proposal idea. “As soon as I realized it was Blake, I knew it would get done,” Stover said. “He started putting me in touch with people and people and people, that everything would be all right. Sometimes with these big races, they don’t want people just hanging out behind the finish line. I couldn’t be out in front. “She’s got to cross the finish line.” Index Church Directory .........7 Classifieds .................11 Editorial ........................4 Neighbors ....................5
Near the two hour mark, Palczewski came in sight. Then she came to the finish line where the moment neither will forget happened. Palczewski was in awe of how her now fiance lined up the proposal. “I’m amazed how he pulled it off the way he did,” Palczewski said. “It’s huge, shocking, amazing and really cool.” How the couple met is a story in and of itself. Stover did not know how to swim. Yet he found himself interested in competing in a triathlon. The first discipline of the three-event race is swimming. He wanted to learn how to swim, so he went to a gym in Des Moines. There he met a single lady, Palczewski.

She taught him. The couple hit it off. “I sent her a text message and said ‘Hey, do you want to meet me at the gym and teach me how to swim,’” Stover said. “We’d been texting back and forth, but we’d never met before. We met at a gym in our swimming trunks there teaching me how to swim.” “And it snowballed from there.” Both enjoy outdoor activities. “She runs a lot. I bike a lot,” Stover said. “We boat a lot. We’re outdoors people and things like that.” It was how Stover came up with the idea of proposing at the end of the Road Race. Two and a half years later, the relationship went to the next level. Now they will be married. Severe Weather

Krisko for the prosecution confirmed the doctor believed Reyna was likely holding up his hand to protect himself during the shooting. The doctor also confirmed that one of the bullet holes in Flores’ head came from behind. On cross-examination by defense attorney Jill Ann Eimermann, Catellier said Reyna had a wallet containing money on his person at the time of his death and Flores had a small plastic bag containing a crystalline material, identified as methamphetamine. Following Catellier’s testimony, the state rested its case. Eimermann called for the court to find Carson not guilty, saying the state did not prove the gun belonged to Carson or premeditation. The defense also felt the testimony of Johnson and Byers couldn’t be trusted as the witnesses had their own motives. Judge John D. Lloyd determined the jury had enough evidence to make a determination on the charges and moved ahead with the trial. The defense had subpeoned a former Osceola resident, Deva Sinklier, who had filed a police report in 2007 alleging Flores and Reyna were part of a group of boys harassing her son. However, she was unable to recall which boys were involved or whether there was any mention of a weapon, so she wasn’t brought to testify before the jury. Carson would be the final witness to take the stand. Claiming self-defense The crux of Carson’s defense was a plot by an underground society to kill him or put him away for life. He posited that while walking to his car and back for a pack of cigarettes, Carson approached a black Honda in the driveway of
