Mom Prom OCMS, Eagles Lodge to put on special event geared toward mothers, sons By AMY HANSEN

Don’t you wish you could say you took your mom to the prom? All jokes aside, now you can. On Friday, May 6, Osceola Chamber/Main Street (OCMS) and Osceola Eagles Lodge are partnering to bring to the community the first ever “Mom Prom.” It will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at Osceola Eagles. “ Y o u hear a lot about dads doing stuff with their little girls around Valentine’s Day, Lumsden but people just don’t think about it
around Mother’s Day — it doesn’t seem like. It seems to be more of a family event, which this is, too,” said Derek Lumsden, OCMS executive director. Similar to Snowflake The idea for the Mom Prom came from requests to do a “sister” event to Osceola’s Snowflake Ball. People wanted an opportunity to do an event that was geared toward mothers and sons. Thus, the idea for the Mom Prom was born. The Mom Prom gives a chance for boys to give their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and godmothers a chance to dress up, go out on the town and dance the night away. Please see MOM PROM, Page 4

said the city doesn’t average an accident there a day, week or even a month. However, it just so happens there have been similar accidents in the course of a few weeks. The April 19 accident is the same scenario as the March 30 accident with vehicles attempting to make a

left turn at the intersection. Getting traffic signals When Wal-Mart was built on the west side of Osceola years ago, city officials asked Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to put in a traffic signal. “ T h e DOT is an organization that is driven strictly by number,” Duffus said Duffus during the council meeting. “And, the numbers they look at are, of course, the numbers of vehicles that roll through the intersection and the number of accidents you have and the type of accidents you have. And, prior to Walmart, we didn’t have very many at all.”
