According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, Robert Lynn Myers, 55, of Murray was driving a 2011 Buick west on Highway 34 when he slowed to turn into a residence and was struck from behind by Rutledge, driving a 2012 Hyundai, who said he was looking down at the time of the collision.

Damage estimates are $15,000 to Myers’ vehicle and $15,000 to Rutledge’s vehicle.

Iowa Pride scholarship makes attending private college a reality OSKALOOSA — William Penn University, like many other private colleges in the state, continues to find unique ways to attract Iowa students. NAMI Family-to-Family classes in Osceola The Iowa chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is hosting a special series of classes in the Osceola area.

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12-session education program for family, partners, friends and significant others of adults living with mental illness. The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved one living with mental illness, while maintaining their own well-being.

Coursework includes information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other mental health conditions. The program is taught by trained teachers who are also family members and know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness.

NAMI Iowa is looking

for individuals who are family members and live in and are served by Cross County Rural Offices of Social Services, which includes the following counties: Clarke, Decatur, Lucas, Marion, Monroe, Ringgold and Wayne who are interested in becoming teachers of our family-to-family education program.

NAME Family-to-Family is included in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices and has been hailed for improving communication and compassion in situations where mental illness has caused difficulties.

On Oct. 23, 1971, Chuck married Cynthia Ann Felton Cooper at New Virginia. He began working in the concrete construction trade where he operated his own business for a time and also worked for SPECK USA until his retirement.

Charles is survived by his children, Brian (Alyssa Halter) Cooper of New Virginia, Raquel “Rockie” (Bob) Lundy of Osceola, Tami (Donnie) Boutwell of Athens, Alabama, and Ricky (Jaque Harmon) Cooper of Indianola; grandchildren, Megan (Kyle Savage) Boutwell, Jaci Boutwell, Jessika (Manuel) Flores,

graduated from Leon High School with the class of 1949.

On Dec. 29, 1949, she married Don- Hembry ald Clyde Hembry in Leon. The family farmed at several locations over the years, but all were in Decatur County. In 1991, they retired and moved into Leon where they lived for 25 years. The past five years, they lived in the housing community on the north edge of Leon.

Glendean is survived by her children, Mike (Kathy) Hembry, Deena Halstead and Donnie Hembry; grand-

children, Shawn Halstead, Laura Siess, James Hembry, Mark Hembry, Robert Hembry and Crystal Hembry; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Brooke, Zoey, Harlow, Isla and Clayton; sister Gwen McClure of Leon; sisters-in-law, Joanne (Earl) Hanthorn of Leon, Carol (Leo) Engelbrecht of Bondurant, Betty (Don) Mullins of Osceola and Mary Hembry of Osceola; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Glendean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don Hembry, on Feb. 24, 2016; sister Gerata Scott; sister-in-law Marybelle (Ralph) Hill and brothersin-law, Myron Hembry, Carol Kirk, Max McClure and Matt Scott.

On April 14, 1943, she married E.L. (Jim) Porterfield in Princeton, Missouri.

Doris worked as a homemaker and later, she worked for Snyder’s Variety Store in Humeston in the jewelry department for 29 years.

Doris was a member of Humeston Christian Church, working with the Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) and singing in the choir. Doris was a member of Humeston and Osceola Order of the East-

ern Star, past Noble Grand of the Humeston Rebekah Lodge, Red Hat Society and former Cub Scout leader.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., in Osceola, with the Rev. Dwayne Henrichs officiating. Interment followed in Hebron Cemetery near Weldon.

Through spills, leaks, and run-off, this sewage contaminates our waterways and contributes to Iowa’s water crisis.

Readers should question the validity of the concerns raised by Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement about the Master Matrix, which is used to regulate and score proposals for new farms. Last month, the attorney for Mitchell County stated that Iowa CCI “misled” the county board of supervisors in opposing a proposed farm.

Law-makers know this is a huge problem, but have done nothing to stop it. Their indifference and political cowardice has enabled these factory farms to skirt the rules, avoid environmental regulation, and proliferate. Last year, 448

new factory farms were approved in Iowa. This year, 126 have already been approved. The legislature has failed us on this issue. We need a moratorium.

known for extreme tactics, including getting arrested and protesting at people’s homes. It is kept afloat by millions of dollars from out-of-state groups, while its advocacy would have detrimental effects on rural economies here in Iowa.

If lawmakers want to review the Matrix’s guidelines, they should only listen to true stakeholders in agriculture. Groups like ICCI don’t deserve a seat at the table.

“I am in the Navy now” that’s what you hear around here all the time.

Arrived here o.k. and am now a full-fledged sailor, like it just dandy. Sure is crowded here, new fellows coming in everyday, there is not a great deal of organization yet as they have more men that they can handle but they are slowly but surely getting

things in shape. I have a state room with three other fellows. I am one of the ship’s guards and stand watch eight out of every 24 hours. Four hours in a watch so you see I got in good. The rest of the fellows are made up into work parties and have to work all day until we get in the electrical school. The ship is about a block and a half long. I have been over in New York two or three times and haven’t got lost yet. If you have any Prince Albert you don’t need, send it along, tobacco is hard to get. “ “I am liable to be here for a month or more. We are getting caught up with our work and get shore leave every night. The boys from my company all get a 36 hour leave Saturday night. I am getting to be quite proficient of washing clothes and mending, also of sweeping and scrubbing. See some Osceola boys often,

there one is in the hospital with measles. It gets better here every day. I have not drilled or learned very much regulations yet, but it is not as bad as my first crude impression.”

“My officers are all good to me and I have been sleeping out on deck where it is nice and cold. It rained here yesterday and was very cold but is nice today. Yes, if you send a box I can get it alright, you want to put it in a good strong box and rope it good. No they do not open our mail before it comes to us, they only read the mail that goes off the ship. I cannot tell you how far out we go but I have not been seasick yet so guess I will not be for I have had plenty chances so far. We get mail nearly every day. It is brought to the ships, put in the Post Office and a list is put up of the names of the men that got mail. I would sure like to get some things to eat from home so don’t be afraid to send them.”

Wonder of Words returns April 22 Free festival lineup includes local and nationally-renowned authors DOWNTOWN DES MOINES – The 2017 Wonder of Words Festival will celebrate the written word with local and national authors in Downtown Des Moines on Saturday, April 22. The Festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Des Moines Public Library’s Central Library, 1000 Grand Ave. in Downtown Des Moines. New this year is a collaboration with the Des Moines Public Library. Through her many Slow Flowers-branded projects, Prinzing has convened a national conversation that stimulates consumers and professionals alike to make conscious choices about their floral selections. Maureen Corrigan, a highly trusted and beloved book critic who reviews books for NPR’s “Fresh Air.” She is also a columnist for The

Washington Post and the critic-in-residence at Georgetown University.

Corrigan is the author of two books of her own: “Leave Me Alone I’m Reading” and “So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why it Endures.”

The event will also feature a number of special activities and workshops, including: Morning yoga and reading with Andy Douglas.

Douglas is the author of “The Curve of the World: Into the Spiritual Heart of Yoga.” An interactive Des Moines Writers’ Workshop.

April showers City council shares yard care appreciation, concerns

Between the rain and shining sun southern Iowa has been experiencing lately, it’s no question spring is in full swing. What might be a surprise is yard upkeep in Osceola seems to have improved right along with the weather.

“In general, the grass clippings is looking pretty darn good,” said Osceola Second Ward City Councilman Dan Hooper, noting the few minor problems he’d noticed had been cleaned up right away.

Clippings left on sidewalks and in the road aren’t just unsightly. During rains, they’re washed into sewer drains, where the phosphorus they contain eventually makes its way back to the water supply. Residents here already complain about the treatments needed to keep water potable. Responsible lawn care is an easy way to combat the problem.

“Up until today, I don’t think I’ve noticed anybody blowing out into the street,” said At-Large Member Dennis Page, who offered advice to less-experienced homeowners. “Mow a couple of laps back into your yard before you turn the other way.

My first three times around, I blow it back into my yard.”

The landscaping in town received public praise as well.

“One of the things the former mayor pointed out was the surprising number of flowering trees in this community, almost to the point of more than irises, which I think is our official flower,” said At-Large Member Dr. George Fotiadis, however, there is always room for improvement.

“I still don’t like all the trash cans left on the curb all week long,” said Hooper.

“Fotiadis enjoyed the trees and beauty, then we got brown and yellow trash cans on the curb. We got to stop that somehow.”

While residents might be inclined to think the council has bigger fish to fry, there is scientific basis behind high standards for community maintenance. “Broken windows policing,” is a policy which seeks to prevent serious crime by keeping residents active. That’s accomplished by creating welcoming environments that are beautiful and safe.

So, something as fast and simple as pulling a trash can away from the curb once a week is capable of making a difference.

JOHNSTON — Pfc. William R. Johnston, of Murray was part of approximately 40 Iowa Army National Guard Soldiers recently recognized during a patching ceremony held at the Camp Dodge Joint Maneuver Training Center in Johnston, Iowa.

This ceremony represents a time-honored tradition, where Iowa Citizen-Soldiers officially receive the left-shoulder military patch representing their unit of assignment in the Iowa Army National Guard.

It also marks completion of the Iowa National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits the education and skills needed to excel during their Army Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (military school).

These Soldiers represent

today’s Iowa Army National Guard, which consists of 7,000 Citizen-Soldiers based in more than 40 communities across the state. Johnston, a 2012 graduate of Southwestern Community College, of Creston, Iowa, now becomes a Human Intelligence Collector with Company D, 224th Brigade Engineer Battalion, of Johnston. He is a 2010 graduate of Murray High School, of Murray.

Tennis teams sweep Knoxville

Clarke’s boys tennis team is moving in the right direction.

The Indians defended the home courts with a 9-0 win over Knoxville Thursday.

“The boys are getting better every match,” said Clarke coach Jeff Erhardt.

“We are starting to figure out what it takes to win the close matches.”

The Indians won close matches all day. Jon Echeveste had a 10-8 win over Cam Liston at number three singles. Nathan McCann earned at 10-6 win over Cade McNeill at number four singles, while Zach Smith earned a 10-7 win over Aidan Zoutte at number six singles.

In doubles, the tandem of Billy Otto and Echeveste won 10-78 over Ben Wallace and Liston. Reed Morris and Zach Smith earned a 11-9 win over Blake McClung and McNeill.

Also in singles, Morris won 10-5 over McClung, while Otto won 10-1 over Wallace. Sam Reynoldson routed R.J. Roberts 10-2.

In doubles, McCann and Reynoldson won 10-3 over Roberts and Zoutte.

WINTERSET — Clarke golf coach Steve McWilliams gave an incentive to his team before last Tuesday’s triangular with Creston and Winterset.

The girls team surpassed McWilliams’ expectations with their best day of the season.

The Lady Indians fired a team score of 197 to win the meet. Creston was second with a 206 and Winterset was third with a 224.

“I gave them a little incentive. I told them if they would break 200, which I didn’t think would happen, I guess then I’m out supper,” McWilliams said. “It’s worth it.”

The team was buzzing as McWilliams brought players in from around Lakeview Country Club.

“I know they were all excited.”

Clarke was led by Vanes-

sa Bakley’s runner-up medalist round of 46. The Lady Indians added rounds of 48 from Breana Lowry, a 49 from Sadie Marker and a 54 from Caitlin Clark.

“That’s the best round by far,” McWilliams said.

“We’ve been consistently getting better. We’ve got some athletes on the team that are first-year golfers.

With the natural athlete part, they’re picking up the game real quick.”

Bakley is one of them that’s picked up the game quickly.

“She’s learning the touch and that’s showing, so good job,” McWilliams said.

The Indian boys were third with 194.

Winterset won with a 152 and Creston was second with a 165.

Clarke was led by Connor Deutsch’s round of 42.

Ethan Potter was next in with a 47.

A story is told about the great violinist Niccolo Paganini, who was performing one evening before a packed concert hall, surrounded by a full orchestra.

As he began the final piece, one of the strings on his violin snapped. In his genius, Paganini was able to continue playing the piece on the remaining three strings.

A moment later, a second string snapped. Paganini continued, playing the concerto on the remaining two strings. And then a third string snapped, but still Paganini continued.

He finished the piece, note for note, with one string on his violin. When the performance was over, the crowd rose in thunderous applause.

City council authorizes $1.8 million in sewer improvements

At Tuesday night’s city council meeting, members voted unanimously to approve a $1.8 million loan needed for waste treatment improvements. This project represents the last step needed to clear a consent order in place between the city and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

In 2010, Iowa DNR found the sewer system in Osceola was inadequate and unsafe, leading to untreated waste potentially pooling in ditches and ponds and on lawns.

Fun in the sun: Warm weather brought out restored beauties, like this 1934 Dodge truck,

a familiar site at Goodguys and Concours d’Elegance car shows in Des Moines. Pictured is owner Dan Hooper, who bought the Dodge in Oxnard, California, in 1966 and spent four years restoring the classic to its natural beauty. The paint job was the only part of the process he didn’t perform on his own.
