Smyrna school house fire

A tall, thin chimney rises up from a foundation covered in charred rubble. It is all that remains of the Smyrna school house, one of the oldest one-room schools in the state.

“It wasn’t secure, but it was solid,” said Bryant Bay of Woodburn, who stopped by the paper last week to share the news.

He’s among several in town who thinks it was “torched,” though officials have yet to weigh in on the official cause of the fire.

“The building is gone, but the community is there.

Hundreds of kids went to school there,” said Bay. The former military policeman and volunteer firefighter helped mow the

lawn at the site, just across from Smyrna Cemetery. He would like to see it converted into a park or information center, he said. Unfortunately, in order to make those kinds of changes, the community will have to track down the plot’s owners.

“The Smyrna school is right on the Mormon Trail,” said Don Reasoner of The Iowa Mormon Trail Association. “The association bought it. Then we sold it to someone who said he was going to make it into a house, but I don’t think anything came of it.”

The original school was built in the late 1850s with an upgrade later in 1906.

house must be completely by 9/1/1906,” read an entry in the July 5, 1906, edition of the Osceola Sentinel, page 4.

“The school house was one of the oldest,” said Marie White of the Clarke

County Historical Society. “In the country school book, the list of names for students starts in 1894. The school was closed in 1947.”

After the building was retired, it remained a community center. Voting for

the township took place at the Smyrna school house up until it was sold. Even back then they had a problem with vandals.

Not to brag, but Osceola is home to one of 25 musicians selected for the 2016 Iowa Music Project’s Songwriting Showcase. Rick Burke’s entry, “Lazarus,” is a celebration of the country-folk sound present throughout southern Iowa.

“There used to be oldtime country jam sessions in every town,” says Burke. “In Humeston, Murray, Lucas, all over the place. In Woodburn, 150 people would show up. They’d stop in the middle, everyone would stop and eat, and then you’d start playing again. That’s where I started out.”

At age 25, the music bug bit Burke, and he moved from country and country rock to something harder.

“We were a band called ROXX, out of Lamoni. We played rock, classic rock, I guess you would say,” said

in different spots around Southwest Iowa.

Burke also took part in a Pink Floyd cover band, selling out venues, like the Lucas theater, every night they played.

“It’s amazing it came together,” said Burke. “It’s so hard to take 11 people that have a life and get them headed in one direction.”

He plays frequently on his own, and occasionally with a band, throughout central and southern Iowa.

tailed the new lanterns and wood burning stove moved into the school in anticipation of upcoming elections.

In a piece entitled, “Picturesque Iowa polling place,” that ran in the November, 1976 edition of the Des Moines Tribune, receiving board members discussed the number of items that had gone missing from the school over the years.

The thefts weren’t limited to trinkets. They included a coal-burning stove and 1,000 pounds of its fuel.

It didn’t take much for the community to attribute the fire to vandals.

Weldon Volunteer Fire Department contained the blaze, but weren’t able to save the aging structure.

Today, the chimney and the foundation are all that’s left of the school, and an odd metal disc embedded in the top step — which afforded children just enough time to scrape the mud off their boots before lessons began.

Osceola Girl Scouts — Service Unit 530 — includes girls from Osceola, Murray, Van Wert, Weldon and Woodburn.

Last year there were six troops, with a total of 52 girls. A little over 10,000 packages of cookies were sold. The profits for each $4 box pays for many things, including camp upkeep, incentive prizes, badges, cash deposit to troop accounts and for the Osceola Scout House.

This year there are six troops, as well.

According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, Sheila Rae Purscell, 65, of Murray, was driving a 2012

Chevrolet south on Interstate 35 between the 34th and 35th mile marker when a coyote entered the roadway, and Purscell was not able to stop in a safe manner. Purscell’s vehicle struck the coyote, causing minimal damage to her vehicle.

With the next meeting of the Revenue Estimating Conference approaching, there are some questions about how Iowa’s process works and how it compares to the ways other states forecast their future revenue. And as there are fifty states, there are fifty different processes for determining how much tax revenue a state will generate.

Iowa’s process to set revenue projections, the Revenue Estimating Conference, is laid out in Iowa Code section 8.22A. The law requires a three-member panel to convene at least three times a year where they review and set estimates for revenue, tax refunds, interest earned by the state, and gaming revenue. The three members include a representative of the Executive branch (usually the director of the Department of Management), a representative of the Legislative branch (usually the fiscal services director of LSA), and a member of the public mutually agreed to by the other members.

The group meets generally meets in October, December, and March to do their work. The key meeting is in December, where the panel sets the official revenue estimate for the upcoming fiscal year. The March meeting can play a key role in the budgeting process, if the panel’s revenue projection for the upcoming year is reduced from their December forecast. When this occurs, the General Assembly is required to use the lower number as the revenue estimate for the next fiscal year.

In 2015, the National Association of State Budget Officers published Budget Processes in the States which includes a review of process each state uses to project future revenue.

The majority of states utilize some process where the

executive and legislative branches come to agreement on a revenue forecast.

How they get to those consensus projections can vary greatly.

South Dakota starts the budgeting process with the governor submitting his budget and revenue estimate to the Legislature in early December each year.

The process then shifts to the Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee, which receives revenue projections from the Legislative Research Council (their version of LSA) and the governor’s Bureau of Finance and Management.

Within the first 20 days, the Joint Appropriations Committee must decide which projection they will use for the state’s budget.

Missouri’s forecasting process is unique in the fact that it is not established in state law. While the governor is required by law to include a revenue estimate as part of their budget recommendation, the legislature is not statutorily bound by this. They instead use a practice where the state’s budget office, both chambers of the legislature, and a professor from the University of Missouri develop a staff-level consensus estimate. From here, the Governor and legislative leaders decide whether or not to accept the staff recommendations and agree on a consensus estimate. Since this is not required by state law, there have been years when actual consensus was not reached.

Of the neighboring states, the one with the process most similar to Iowa’s is Nebraska. Their revenue forecast is established by Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board.

This is a nine-member board, with four members appointed by the Governor and five appointed by the Legislature. Those appointed to these positions are required to have expertise in economics, economic fore-

casting, or tax policy and they serve four year terms.

The Board receives revenue estimates from the Nebraska Department of Revenue and the Legislature’s Fiscal Office and then develops a consensus revenue forecast.

In Minnesota, the process for estimating state revenue is significantly different than what happens in Iowa. Revenue forecasting is an exclusive function of the executive branch, with the governor’s budget agency – Minnesota Management and Budget - being responsible for publishing five-year revenue estimates twice a year. That agency’s Economic Analysis Division is the formal revenue estimating group, which makes formal estimates in November and February each year.

They also issue economic updates in January, April, July, and October and makes revisions to the estimate. Wisconsin has a similar approach. The revenue estimates are made by the Department of Revenue.

So what is the best approach to estimating state revenue? Some groups have tried to lay out best practices for revenue forecasting.

The left-leaning Center for Budget and Policy Priorities identifies five practices that they feel are necessary to improve states’ revenue forecasting process. The five practices are: The governor & legislature should jointly produce the revenue estimate The forecasting body should include outside experts The forecast and its assumptions should be published and made easily accessible on the internet Meetings of the forecasting group should be open to the public Estimates should be revised during the year According to their survey, Iowa is one of fifteen states that utilize all five practices.

But, CBPP’s best practices all focus on process. They

do not focus on the accuracy of the forecasts. This is really the key data point.

O n e g r o u p that has not only reviewed state fore- Joel Fry casting practices, but also assists states to improve their process is the Pew Center for the States. The Pew Center worked with the Nelson Rockefeller Institute of Government in 2011 to study state revenue forecasts and why states were experiencing greater volatility in tax revenue. In their 23 year review of state revenue forecasts, the study came to an interesting conclusion.

States were more likely to under-estimate state revenue, producing greater ending balances. The study found that in 16 of the 23 years examined, state revenue forecasts were lower than the actual revenue brought into the states.

During the timespan of the study, there were three recessions. The Pew-Rockefeller study determined that forecasting errors got larger in each succeeding recession. They also determined that the use of consensus forecasting processes does not mean a more accurate forecast. It does make the forecast less susceptible to political forces.

So how do states improve their forecasting process?

The Pew study suggests that states should take time to analyze those situations where the estimate was off. States like Indiana and Michigan undertook reviews of their forecasting process in the aftermath of missing projections during the Great Recession. Another recommendation, which Iowa already does, is the frequency of projections and the need to update these forecasts during the legislative ses-

Mary Israel Osceola

Mary Lavina Israel, 96, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at Circle of Life Legacy Lodge in Chariton.

Mary was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Lucas County, the daughter of Albert W .

B a k e r Israel a n d Irene (Evans) Baker.

She grew up in Lucas and graduated from Lucas High School.

On Sept. 15, 1940, she married Glenn Ronald Israel at Community of Christ Church in Chariton, formally the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. They were married 69 years. Mary was a kind, loving and wonderful person who enjoyed hugs. She had many church friends that she loved and cared for deeply. She also loved traveling, crocheting lap robes and pot holders, working cross puzzles

and reading books. She worked many places including Gross Galesburg in Chariton, Snowden in Osceola, typing at the city hall, helping teachers in the county, working at the telephone office in Lucas making 10 cents an hour and selling Avon for many years.

Family was the most important thing to Mary, and the entire family would gather once a month for dinner to celebrate birthdays. There would be lots of laughter and many stories. Mother loved to talk about her hometown.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents; husband Glenn; brothers, William J. (Bill), Albert E. (Jake) and Gerald E. Baker; sistersin-laws, Louise, Wilma and Evelyn Baker.

Left to cherish her memories is her daughter Janice Heston and son-in law Keith, who was like a son to her; grandsons, Lloyd Heston of Bondurant, Mark (Michelle) Heston of Woodburn and John Heston of Woodburn; six great-grandchildren,

four great-great-grandchildren, special friends Roland and Rochelle McKay of Fort Dodge; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends, as well. Graveside services were held 11:30 a.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Fry Hill Cemetery in Lucas with Elder Tom Meyer officiating. Pallbearers were Mark Heston, John Heston, Christopher Heston, Daniel Crandall, J.R. Dixson and Ronald McKay. Honorary pallbearers were Keith Heston, Lloyd Heston, Andy Gwinn, all the great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Reservoir audit complete Faller, Kincheloe & Co., PLC, Certified Public Accountants, Des Moines, Iowa, today released an audit report on the Clarke County Reservoir Commision in Osceola, Iowa.

The Commission’s revenues totaled $3,900,675 for the year ended June 30, 2016, a 188 percent increase from the prior year.

Revenues included $49,181 in operating grants, contributions and restricted

interest, $3,821,362 in capital grants, contributions and restricted interest, and $30,132 in unrestricted investment earnings.

Expenses for Commission operations for the year ended June 30, 2016, totaled $219, 032, a 6 percent increase from the prior year. Expenses included $249,863 for public works and $41,169 for general government.

cy, was born Oct. 20, 1943, at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola. Charles graduated the eighth grade from Weldon School, from Osceola High School in 1961 and Northwest Missouri State College in 1966. He served in the United States Army from May 1967 until 1969 during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed in Germany as a nuclear weapons maintenance specialist. Upon his discharge, Charles worked for an insurance company in Des Moines. He later returned to Weldon, and purchased the family grocery and hardware store. He operated the business, and also developed and operated Country Wholesale, in which he delivered goods to family type grocery stores in the area for 20 years. Â

Charles was married to Sherry Simmerman for a short time, from May 3, 1975, until Sept. 28, 1976. In the 1980s, Charles coached Little League in Weldon and Van Wert for several years.

Charles was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Leon.

Dear Editor: Please allow me to correct misinformation in Hilary Ferrand’s recent movie review (“A Dog’s Purpose, Rated PG,” Feb. 15). PETA did not release the video footage of a dog named Hercules being forced into churning water on the set of A Dog’s Purpose. TMZ did, after it was given to them by someone who was there on the set when it happened.

Palliative care is a type of care coordinated by a team of doctors and other health care professionals to manage the symptoms of serious illnesses. The team offers support to patients and their families for common and often debilitating side effects of treatment. They focus on properly managing pain and identifying any emotional or social concerns a patient may have.

But too often, when patients first hear “palliative,” they think their doctors mean “hospice” care: a worthy specialty in its own right, designed for the

end of life. But palliative care is appropriate for any stage of a serious illness. The public needs more education about the benefits of this care, and we need more providers to meet that growing need. The more understanding and access we offer patients, the better their treatment and experience will be.

The council, if approved, is expected to develop recommendations to increase public awareness and reduce barriers to palliative care services throughout the state.

I thank Rep. Frey for supporting this important priority and hope others will follow his example.

It’s clear to anyone with eyes and a heart that Hercules was terrified and did not want to go into the water. He was terrorized for movie scenes—there’s no spinning or defending that.

And the new report commissioned by American Humane confirms that a dog was forced into churning water on not just one, buttwo occasions.

During one of these incidents, the dog was submerged.

There is simply no ex-

cuse for this, especially since computer-generated imagery, blue screen, animatronics, and other technologies can replace the use (and abuse) of animals in movies altogether.

Films likeThe Jungle Book and Planet of the Apes have created stunningly realistic scenes without involving animals at all.

Kind people are staying far, far away fromA Dog’s Purpose and other movies that treat living, feeling beings as if they were props.

BACK IN TIME ON THE SQUARE

The danger of fire was ever present in the days of all wood construction coupled with inadequate fire-fighting equipment and water. In order to eliminate the hazard, in 1869, the council passed an ordinance giving owners a month to remove stove pipes going through roofs and sides of buildings, replacing them with brick chimneys.

New construction occurred in the late 1880s with iron and wood frameworks covered with iron, inside and out.

On the corner of South Main Street, going north, was Garretson’s Drug Store, 1885, Dr. B. M. Robins, 1890, and Fisher & Lynn, 1947. This is the Windland’s, Western Auto, Vision Center location today.

Osceola National Bank built a splendid new stone front building in 1920. Today, this is Clarke County State Bank.

Next door was Harrison’s Grocery, Rindy’s Gold Star Market,

Kraft Clothing, Paul’s Men’s clothing, Heinrich Rexall, Goldsmith, Ettinger’s, Dr. Paul’s dentistry and insurance, Earl E. Coburn, a photographer, who later went to Hollywood, California, and worked for Warner Brother’s Studio and Samuel Goldwyn doing stills.

The Goldsmith family was in the business on the east side ofthe dquare before moving to the south side. Their large store burned to the ground in 1917.

Two men were killed in the fire.

Richard A. Robinson bought out a variety store in 1933. He expanded his business in the Harding block that was build in 1895.

The store carried dry goods, hardware, boat kits, clothing for the family and much more.

Robinson purchased Paul’s Men’s clothing store in 1973. Robinson’s landmark business is located in three store fronts.

North of the alley was the Myer-Riley block. Riley and Simmons Bank was located on the south side of the building. Paul’s Hardware and Implement, J.C. Penney and

several restaurants were on the north side.

In 1902, S.S. Dalby built the two-story building with the balcony window. A full-size dapple grey paper mache horse, fully harnassed, was in the window as a sign of Dalby’s trade. General merchandise, Hood’s Shoe Store, Miller’s Shoe Store and clothing stores followed.

Newspaper offices, dry goods, groceries, attorneys filled the in W.H. Hall block.

Paul and Ruth Ostrus founded the 70th Coast to Coast store in the nation in Osceola in 1946. The block was also home to meat markets, clothing and an expanded Coast to Coast that was destroyed by a fire in Nov. 1984.

In 1892, Bond’s Jewelry Store was established in Slymaker block. Bond moved the jewelry store to North Main Street in 1902.

Other businesses were Moore’s Shoes, shoes and clothing store businesses. After WWII, the building was made into two fronts with Slaymaker, Killmar law office where H & R Block now stands.

The large three-story Mintonye block was built around spring 1870. In 1896, it was a London Drug. It included offices for Dr. Sells and Story and a hospital on the third floor until 1944.

In 1952, it became a Gambles Store. The owners through the years were Hutchings, Estell and Baker. Drug store owners throughout the years were Coye-Thornton, Albertson, Doolittle, Windrath, Shadley and Kentner. This is where the Department of Human Services now stands.

On the three-story Masonic block, Cowles Bank started in 1871.

Attorney offices, insurance, Dr. Sells office and the American Legion occupied the building, with the Jaycees on the second floor. Iowa State Bank and Spurgeon Mercantile started in 1929; future home of Iowa Southern Utilities, Rexall Drug, Penick Electric. The Osceola Masonic Lodge built and owned the floor.

Infrared saunas: safety and benefits

A celebration of local sounds In 2016, Burke entered the Iowa Music Project’s Songwriting Showcase, a juried contest focused on defining the varied sounds of Iowa.

“It was in the Des Moines paper,” said Burke. “My friend had it, and she talked me into putting a song in.”

Out of 450 selections, Burke’s “Lazarus” was selected as a top 25 finalist and included on the IMP’s CD compilation.

IMP is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which aims to support live music and music venues throughout Iowa. It’s

a mission that suits Burke perfectly. He hosts a weekly openmic night 7 p.m. Wednesdays at the Osceola Eagles Lodge.

“I’ve been there and times the music has been just amazing,” he said, but support for the local music scene is sometimes lacking.

When people do show up, they’d better be prepared to do more than listen.

“That’s one of the things about my shows,” he said. “If I know you play, it’s going to take a lot of ‘no’s’.”

Patty Carson joined in during Saturday’s gig at the Eagles Lodge. The 82-year old was recently forced to give up playing guitar because of arthritis in her hands. Thankfully, the dulcimer is more forgiving.

First things first, the PG-13 rating on this film is baffling.

Murray FFA Activities:

In August, the Murray FFA took teams to State FFA Dairy Judging and Livestock Judging in Ames. The Dairy team placed 8th overall. Later in the fall, the Chapter attended South Central Career Development (CDE) Days in Osceola. Here, students participated in Livestock Judging, Horse Judging, Dairy Judging, a Vet Science CDE, took the Greenhand and Chapter Quizzes. We then traveled with seven students to National Convention in Indianapolis, where along the way the students got to tour Kinze Manufacturing in Williamsburg, the Food Hub in Davenport, and Fair Oaks Dairy and Swine farm (which one the student choice award!). At National Convention, students took park in workshops and service learning projects and attending several general sessions. Following National Convention, the students prepped for Fruit Sales. Our top three sellers sold over $1000 a piece, with several other students contributing much more! Starting in January the Murray Greenhouse was up and running, with students utilizing the greenhouse for experiments and to set up their own aquaponics systems. In January, the students attended Experience State Week where they were able to interact one-on-one with the National Officers at the Enrichment Center in Ankeny. The senior FFA Members attended Legislative Day in late January where they were able to meet with Amy Sinclair and Joel Fry and discuss the importance of agriculture education in the school. Murray FFA was awarded several grants throughout the fall and winter which has attributed to the plant/flower start-ups in the greenhouse, new and updated shop safety equipment, and funds to provide picnic tables as a part of a community service activity in partnership with the Clarke County Conservation Board. Most recently, the CCCB has donated an aquaponics system to the Murray Greenhouse. Students are preparing for FFA Sub-Districts at Stuart on Tuesday, dress up days all week, Farmer's Breakfast on Thursday, and the Sweetheart Dance on Friday; in addition to preparing for the FFA Banquet in mid-March.

Breaking new ground

Sunday, Feb. 19, the first shovels full of dirt were moved in anticipation of the new Faith Fellowship of Osceola church.

“Work may even begin this week,” said Rev. Sheldon Lorenson.

The congregation has steadily outgrown their current church building, located at 230 S. Fillmore St., in more ways than one.

“We purchased this old church here across from the library in 1994,” said Lorenson. “We have a good-sized congregation, and we have a lot of older members who have trouble getting up and down steps.”

The design for the new church was borrowed from an existing facility in Northern Minnesota. The one-story facility has ample room for service and activities.

It will be located at 1694 State Highway 152, just west of the 7th Day Adventist Church.

Says Lorenson, “We’re hoping to get it done by October.”

Everyone was sad. Even though he’d turned 100 last year, no one ever actually expected “Grampy Joe” to die. He’d lived in his own home until the day he died – just two days ago.

As adults gathered in groups around family pictures at the funeral home during the visitation, I noticed a little boy sitting quietly by himself. I sat next to him and asked him how he was doing. This is what he said: “I’m just sad for me, ‘cause I’m really gonna miss great great Grampy Joe. He really was great!

But I love him soooooo much that I’ve just gotta let him go – straight to Jesus, ‘cause he followed Jesus forever here, and I know he followed Jesus straight to heaven. He loved to play checkers, and I bet he’s playing checkers with Jesus right now!”

Some we love so very much we just don’t ever want to let them go. They are so precious to us…and yet they are so much more precious to God. That little boy had it right. It was because he loved his “Grampy Joe” so very much that he let him go – straight to the One who loved Joe from the day of his creation, straight to God, who loves each of us so much that God never ever lets us go, no matter what.

We lose some loved ones because they move. Lives change. We lose touch.

God’s love never changes.

God never loses touch with any of us.

We lose some loved ones to death. They let go of life here on earth and embrace eternal life with God. They are out of our sight for a while but never completely out of our minds and hearts.

Pennies for Patients Clarke students raise over $5,000 for blood cancer research

Over the course of three weeks in January, students at Clarke Community Elementary School collected pennies in support of those diagnosed with a bloodbased cancer. Pennies for Patients is a long-standing program that has raised millions of dollars with help from students across the United States.

“Kids learn a lot from donating to a great cause like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,” said elementary counselor Shelly Morgan.

“They give generously without the expectations of anything in return.”

Students scrounge pennies from wherever they can find them — from coat pockets to car recepticles. Plenty ask their parents for help, and sometimes, mom or dad is

able to step up in a big way.

This year, Jeff Mallory, the director of Hy-Vee, said he had students sending in letters asking the store for help.

“Kids are supposed to collect pennies from home,” said Mallory. “In some cases, from families who could use that 20 cents or whatever.”

He wanted to do something big to get kids excited about the project while adding to their collection. Enter his father, Steve Mallory, who puts his spare pennies in a jug all year long. Hy-Vee purchased the pennies and took them to Mrs. Comer’s classroom.

“It took two of us to get them up the steps,” said Mallory. “The first-grade class had to count every one.

There were over 27,000 pennies.”

According to Morgan, 27,511 pennies, to be exact.

The total collection for Pennies for Patients rang in at $5,334.08. Clarke has donated more than $26,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the past five years.

“One of the students approached me recently to ask why we never donate to other causes,” said Morgan.

In response, the school is seeking the public’s opinion on what charity should benefit from their penny-pinching efforts. Those interested should keep an eye on the school website where the chance to vote will be available.

Thursday, Feb. 9, members of the Southern Iowa Hive Handlers attended the first in a series of beginning beekeeper classes at the fairgrounds. The class was able to get a glimpse of standard bee keeping equipment and learn more about establishing their own hives.

Bee keeping is a popular hobby throughout Iowa, but enthusiasts worry the unseasonably warm weather this spring might pose risks to their pollinators.

“I’m a little worried this year,” said veteran bee keeper, Rose Grief. “I have flowers starting to bloom.

Forecasts are calling for ice and snow by next week.

“The warm weather poses several issues,” said Iowa Honey Producers Association Treasurer, and Chariton beekeeper, Rhonda Heston. “The queens of some breeds

will start laying eggs. If the warm weather hangs on too long, the queen may lay too many eggs and the hive could starve because of the increased population. Or, the bees will be too mature before they are needed and will die in the hive.”

DES MOINES — Clarke senior girls bowler LeeAnn Helgevold has been a steadying presence in the lineup the past four seasons.

Her coach, and father, Dale Helgevold has relied on his oldest daughter to be the guiding force for the Lady Indians.

LeeAnn Helgevold capped her career with a 17th-place finish in the Class 1A state tournament Monday at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.

“Just the way she has progressed from a freshman through her senior year has been great,” coach Helgevold said. “From a coaching aspect, she’s been fantastic. She’s the one you lean on, your anchor. She’s the one you want in there in the tough situations.”

As a father, the joy he has for his daughter shines.

“As a parent, she makes us proud for all of the time and effort that has been put in doing a sport she loves,” coach Helgevold said. “It’s great to see she’s doing what she’s doing. Now she’ll move on to the next level.”

Lane conditions were difficult for the individual qualifiers. Only three were on the lane, leaving it difficult to break in properly.

“The lane conditions were hard to adapt to at first,” LeeAnn Helgevold said.

“There was no one to burn a line for me.”

LeeAnn Helgevold struggled in the first game, rolling a 145.

“She had good shots, but wasn’t getting anything to

gevold said. “She was plugging away the best she could.”

“My second game I found my line and powered through,” she said.

Brock Bucy fought the game conditions as LeeAnn Helgevold. He rolled a 186 first game, the turned it on in the second with a 204 and a 390 series, good for a 22nd place finish.

The short series left little margin for error.

“You’ve got to go out with what they give you, make those adjustments,” coach Helgevold said. “Unfortunately, those adjustments didn’t come as quick as we wanted too.”

Bucy keeps growing Bucy continued to show solid growth through his junior campaign.

“He’s progressed amazingly over the past three years,” coach Helgevold said “We had him in youth league before high school.

We’re fortunate to have him for another year. He has really stepped up in some difficult times and done what we’ve asked of him.”

Much will be expected of their returning state qualifier next season.

“We’ll be looking to him to be the boys leader next year going forward,” coach Helgevold said.

The team enjoyed one of its most memorable seasons, coach Helgevold noted.

businesses in the community made pledges for every 200 game thrown or a flat donation. The girls and boys combined for 36 200 games thrown between individual and Bakers. The goal was to raise $500 for the Make-AWish foundation. The teams raised more than $1,400.

The way they improved throughout the season was impressive.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way they finished,” coach Helgevold said. “I couldn’t be more proud of how the way the players presented Clarke when they would go anywhere. They are a top-notch group of kids, great athletes, great sportsmen.”

Clarke’s sportsmanship impressed their coach.

“Win or lose, they were congratulating the other team,” coach Helgevold said. “It’s not about wins and losses. It’s how you grow as individuals. I’ve seen huge growth from that.”

LeeAnn Helgevold finishes her high school career as a three-year state qualifier.

She has almost all of the Clarke girls bowling school records, except for being part of the highest team score at state.

She set the school record game and school record series at the state qualifying meet with a 254 game and a 449 series.

LeeAnn Helgevold’s growth from a freshman to a senior has been a joy for her coach to watch.

“Just the way she progressed from a freshman through her senior year has been in a coaching aspect fantastic,” coach Helgevold said.

Ending it at state was fitting for her.

“I never thought I wild be

qualifier,” LeeAnn Helgevold said.

“I couldn’t be hap- Bucy pier with ending my career at the state tournament.”

Now it’s time for her to take her bowling talents to Sioux City.

“Over the past four years, I have learned to adjust to lane conditions,” LeeAnn Helgevold said. “I have bowled on many lane conditions and do all I can to adjust to make a good shot.

This will be highly beneficial when bowling in college.”

Having her father Dale, and mother Lori, and coaches made the journey more special for LeeAnn. “It has meant so much for me for my parents also to be my coaches,” LeeAnn Helgevold said. “They hold me to a very high standard that I do my best to exceed every day.”

Dale was a proud father Monday.

“We look at these kids as our own and when they are our own, it makes it more special,” coach Helgevold said “Damon (their oldest son) made two appearances at the state tournament, which was absolutely amazing. Now LeeAnn has three.

(Youngest child) Landi has three more years to bowl.

As parents, it’s double-sided. We take pleasure as a coach. We also have to step back as a parent and take that moment to be proud.”

Being part of the bowling program at Clarke is one LeeAnn Helgevold relished.

“It has been more than I could ever imagine,” she said. “It has been an experience I will never forget.”

MURRAY — It was just a matter of patience for the heavily-favored Murray Mustangs boys basketball team Thursday night.

Southeast Warren, just 4-18 for the season, stayed in contention throughout a first quarter marred by missed layups and turnovers in the Class 1A District 12 quarterfinal game in the Jerry Brown Gymnasium.

Murray, 20-2, held just a 12-7 advantage after eight minutes.

Then the Mustangs opened the floodgates with a 28-point barrage to take a 40-19 halftime lead before cruising to an 85-52 victory.

“We told the kids we’re getting the shots we want and they’ll start dropping,” Murray coach Darin Wookey said. “In the second quarter we pressured the ball, pushed it up the floor better and got the tempo up like we planned on.”

One thing Wookey and

the Mustangs didn’t plan on was the perimeter marksmanship of the Warhawks.

Four different Southeast Warren players made a total of nine 3-pointers. Jeff Wadle and Kole Manser each scored 13 points for the Warhawks.

“They really shot the ball better than we anticipated,” Wookey said. “They were 3-for-27 on threes the other night when I watched them, and tonight they came out and made nine threes.

I thought we were a little flat-footed at times defensively.”

Senior forward Bryce Keller led the Mustangs with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

His partner in the post, senior Thane Simmons, hauled in 11 rebounds while scoring eight points. Senior guard Dustin Teas, averaging 7.1 points for the season, had 19 points in the victory. Senior guard Kenny Boles had another good overall performance with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jack Jones added 10 points.

ALBIA — Smiles and hugs abounded among the Central Decatur girls basketball team Monday night.

Their joyous exuberance flooded the Albia High School Gym. The Class 2A thirdranked Cardinals embraced the large number of patrons who made the trip to Monroe County to cheer their team on.

Central Decatur clinched its second consecutive trip to state and fourth in program history with a 64-42 win over Sigourney in the Class 2A Region 8 championship game.

Central Decatur, 24-0, opens Class 2A state tournament play on Tuesday, Feb. 28 against Cascade, 222, at 10 a.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

For most of the first half, Sigourney did something very few teams have been able to do this season. Sigourney kept right with Central Decatur in the opening 16 minutes.

“They came out and played a lot better than most teams have,” said senior Raegan Boothe.

Central Decatur’s offense clicked in the third quarter.

Using effective movement without the basketball, the Cardinals were able to find numerous open looks inside.

Central Decatur took advantage in outscoring Sigourney 21-9.

“We stepped it up and got the passes where we needed them to be,” Boothe said.

“It’s one thing if you dribble, but when you move without the basketball, you’re going to get so many more open looks.”

As the offense hit its sweet spot, the Cardinals were able to extend the lead “We kept plugging away,” said Central Decatur coach Curtis Boothe. “At this time

of the year, I don’t care what the score is as long as we come out on top.”

Sigourney could not slow down sophomore Emma Atwood and Masters. Masters finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

Atwood had 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

The Cardinals defense was dialed in as well.

“Our defense is just as important getting the stop,” Atwood said.

The Cardinals are back in search of their first-ever win at state.

“We want to win one,” coach Boothe said. “Our first goal is to get out of the first round.”

Last season’s experience will greatly benefit the Cardinals as they seek their first state championship.

“Just playing on the floor, the surroundings helps,” said Atwood. “We’re used to it. We’re going to practice to do our best.”

ANKENY — Murray’s girls basketball team stood in a good spot after eight minutes of Friday’s Class 1A Region 7 against Bluegrass Conference rival Grand View Christian.

The Thunder turned up the defensive intensity in the second quarter.

Murray’s offense struggled against Grand View Christian’s pressure.

While the Mustangs recovered in the third and fourth quarters, the poor second quarter was too much to overcome in a 58-43 loss.

Murray’s season ends at 19-6.

Grand View Christian advanced to Monday’s regional final. The Thunder fell to top-ranked Springville 5739.

Grand View Christian’s aggressive defense allowed it to outscore Murray 22-2.

The Thunder forced 10 Mustang turnovers.

“Our second quarter was what killed us,” said Murray coach Jerry Shields. “They came out in the second quarter and dictated how we played.”

Grand View Christian’s defense caused all sorts of problems for Murray.

“They tried to speed the game up and were able to get a lot of steals.”

Murray controlled the pace early, leading 11-6 late in the quarter. A late Grand View Christian bucket cut the Murray edge to 11-8 after eight minutes.

“We started out the game really well,” Shields said “I was very pleased with the first quarter.”

Murray outscored Grand View Christian 19-15 in the third, but trailed 45-32.

Kayla Wookey led Murray with 10 points. Bre Klein had nine points and eight rebounds. Zadie Hatfield added seven points.

This Mustangs season exceeded expectations Shields had.

“It went a lot better than I thought we would be,” Shields said. “We were very pleased. At the beginning of the year, with what everyone else had coming back, I thought we would be fifth or sixth in the conference and we ended up tied for third.”

The Mustangs bid farewell to two seniors: Brandi Gilbert and Katie Otto.

“They became very good floor leaders for us,” Shields said.

I-35’s Phillips, CD’s Kelso place at state wrestling tournament

DES MOINES — Central Decatur senior Kade Kelso had a mission for his final high school match Saturday at the state wrestling tournament.

He reached that mark, going out on top and setting a record in the process.

Kelso achieved his season-long goal of earning a state meet medal placing seventh in Class 2A at 152 pounds over the weekend at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Kelso pinned Beckman Catholic’s Cody Feldman in 3 minutes, 18 seconds.

Kelso, who will wrestle next season at NAIA power Grand View University in Des Moines, set the Cardinals single season wins record with 54.

As he walked off, he shared a big hug with his coaches after his final prep

match.

“It’s great going out with a win,” Kelso said. “I knew I had to stay focused. I didn’t want to break mentally. I knew I had to be patient, do my stuff.”

Cardinals coach Brian Carson was proud of his senior.

“He obtained some goals,” Carson said.

Kelso was one of three Cardinals to reach state.

Trace Carson went 1-2 at 220 pounds. He lost in the first round, won his first round consolation match then fell in the second round of consolation.

Wyatt Dale went 0-2 at 113 pounds.

For the Cardinals, it was a good end to the season.

“I’m just proud of where we started and where we ended up,” Carson said.

“We need to continue to get better.”

Interstate 35’s Nathan Phillips capped a strong week with a fifth-place finish in Class 1A at 113 pounds.

Supporting statement from the Board President and Superintendent for Clarke Community Schools regarding immigration. "Clarke Community Schools supports the inclusiveness, educational diversity, and benefits of all students. Our school district will continue to support and educate all students who come through Clarke s doors to the fullest extent allowed by law."

The school district has contracted for approximately two years to use a crushed asphalt surface on the elementary parking lot. During inclement weather the parking lot continues to be soft with standing water. The surface material can only be bladed when the parking lot is dry. The board planned to discuss replacing the current surface with a more permanent surface.
