Clarke cheerleaders win state title By AMY HANSEN and SCOTT VICKER

OST editorial staff ahansen@osceolaiowa.com

DES MOINES — The Clarke cheerleaders, coached by Jennifer Pollard, won a Class 2A state championship Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. “I am so unbelievably proud of these girls,” Pollard said. “They have worked so hard over the last couple months perfecting their routines.” The Indian cheer squad won the timeout cheer division state title, marking the first time it has ever brought home a trophy from the state competition. The girls also competed in the stunt group division, and had performances by two stunt groups. “We have competed at the Iowa Cheerleading State Competition before but never in these two events,” Pollard said. “So, winning a 2A State Championship in timeout cheer for the first time made it that much more awesome.” Timeout cheer In the timeout cheer division, teams must cheer from a 30-feet by 42-feet competition mat and are given one minute to perform their routine. Teams are judged on the following criteria: effective entrance that immediately involves the crowd with a clean exit upon

completion; potential for crowd response, practical/effective material, easy for crowd to follow and participate; correct motion technique and synchronization; use of props enhances crowd response; genuine spirit, confidence, eye contact, natural smiles, creativity; good volume, spirited, encouraging, natural sounding; effective formations, spacing between squad members to cover crowd, seamless transitions and overall execution and effective use of timeout period. Teams in Class 2A are permitted to have up to 12 members. Members of the Clarke team are Katie VanGundy, Joni Burris, Sofia Contreras, Carter Cooley, Kelsie Grimm, Mackenzee Erlewine, Samantha Stickels, Jordan Heath, Katie Carney, Lyndsey Jackson and Shelby Heston. All-Star Cheer Squad Three members of the Clarke team will perform on the All-Star Cheer Squad, which is made up of 200 cheerleaders from around Iowa. That group performs at halftime of the Class 1A and Class 2A state championship football games at the UNI Dome on Nov. 21. Participating on the All-Star Cheer Squad from Clarke are Stickels, VanGundy and Jackson. “I am already looking forward to what we can accomplish next year,” Pollard said.

Nigerian Bishop Yohanna visits Osceola, shares appreciation of local ministry By AMY HANSEN

OST news editor • ahansen@osceolaiowa.com

For Bishop John Wesley Yohanna, Iowa and Nigeria are partners in Christ. They’re linked by the work people do to help to transform the lives of Nigerians. “And, in fact, the base of my understanding, if there’s any link between the United Methodist Church in Nigeria and globally, United Methodism, I think Iowa is the link,” Bishop Yohanna said. “And Iowa, for many years, has been supporting the church in Nigeria in all ways of life.” Yohanna is the Episcopal leader of Nigeria United Methodist Church. From Oct. 22 to 28, he was scheduled on a church speaking tour of the central, east central and southwest districts of Iowa.

Yohanna was also accompanied by his wife Asmau Yohanna. Yohanna is considered a personal friend of the church’s Iowa conference and has hosted many of its Iowa teams in Nigeria. Yohanna and his wife have come to Iowa as part of the Iowa Nigeria Partnership. “There is need to appreciate Iowans. The work they are doing in the country, in Nigeria, and for touching lives, lives of the poor, lives of people who need Jesus Christ,” Yohanna said. “So, we are here to give thanks to

There are some “tricks of the trade” and advice Sue Body has when it comes to teaching young children. “I try to use a lot of humor and I try to keep my energy level really high,” Body said. “And, if I see kids who are kind of off task, this afternoon we got up and exercised for awhile.” Body, a third grade teacher at Clarke, has jobs for each student, and one of them is delegated the “Movement Master.” When there is a lull in the day, the student helps lead the other classmates in jumping jacks, grasshoppers and push ups to get everybody moving, OST photo by AMY HANSEN focused and back on task.
