Iron Track Challenge Farlow, White Banquet to raise funds running for county auditor for trail system Incumbent Janice White is running against Sarah Jo Farlow in the election of Clarke County auditor. The election is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Janice M. White Tell me about yourself/ background. I have lived and worked in Clarke County all of my life. I am married to Ed White, and we live on a farm in Liberty Township. We have three mar- White ried children: Ryan (Heather) White, Angie (Carl) Ellis and Donnie (Carolyn) White. We have five grandchildren: Seth, Lauren, Reid, Levi and Addison. I have served as your Clarke County auditor for the past four years and as deputy auditor for the previous 12 years (eight as first-deputy auditor). Why are you running for this position? I have enjoyed the challenges of the auditor’s office and serving the public. I feel the county will benefit from my knowledge, experience, professional manner and ability to carry out the many duties that our office is required to perform. What makes you the best candidate for the job? The auditor is the commissioner of elections and the county financial officer. Some of the other duties of the auditor are real estate and taxation manager, county registrar of voters, payroll and human resource manager, accounts payable, budget director, overseer of county plats and clerk to board of supervisors.

KSOI Radio and Osceola Chamber Main Street are hosting the fifth-annual Iron Track Challenge Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 15. The event begins 5 p.m. at Clarke County Fairgrounds and will feature games, auctions and raffles. Tickets for the event are $20 for adults or two for $30 if purchased at the same time and $5 for children and are available for purchase at the Osceola Chamber Main Street office or at the door on the day of the event. Adults are encouraged to bring their identification, as they get a bottomless cup
for beer or soda at the event. Some of the prizes available at the event include a four-hopper pass from Disney, Green Bay Packers autographed football, two reserved tickets to a St. Louis Cardinals game, Iowa State University women’s basketball tickets and numerous gift cards. “About four years ago, we were looking for a fall event to do more of a recognition of the outdoors,” said Derek Lumsden, executive director of Osceola Cham- Lumsden ber Main
Street. “The first couple of years was geared toward hunting and fishing. Then, we decided money would be better spent if we could better figure out a way to channel it into a local project.” After discussing options with the city of Osceola, the decision was made to put the money toward a community-trail system.
Trails The recently completed trail at Q-Pond Park is the first phase of the community-trail system. “The money we raise will go toward more community trails like the one that was recently done at Q-Pond Park,” Lumsden said. “We’re trying to do
that so we have community amenities connected by trails.” According to Osceola Park and Recreation Director Tim Riddle, 1 mile of 8-foot-wide pathway has been paved around Q-Pond Park along Clay Street heading toward the casino and then heading back to the dam. Lumsden said exercise stations are being placed along the trail and benches may be added in the future. “Our next phase we hope to do next year is to start where we left off at the dam and weave our way back around to the TRAILS | 4
It is a big responsibility and I feel having 16 years of experience in the auditor’s office makes me the strongest choice for Clarke County auditor. I am dedicated and committed to getting the job done efficiently and accurately. If elected, what goals do you have planned in relation to the position? If re-elected, I plan to continue running the auditor’s office with the same friendly and professional manner as I have during the past four years. Most of the duties of the auditor’s office are complex with possible financial consequences to the county if mistakes are made. It is my mission to use my knowledge and experience to prevent this from happening. I have successfully accomplished this the past four years, with the help of quality staff. If re-elected, I will continue to dedicate the time and effort to successfully fulfill my duties as your Clarke County auditor.

After the late Fred Diehl died on Sept. 12, Osceola Mayor Thomas Kedley wanted to find a way to honor the former Osceola mayor and carry on his legacy. Kedley initially planned to have Osceola’s police officers and firefighters present at Diehl’s funeral with their police cruisers and fire engines. “I felt like that wasn’t enough.
