Boldon named director of the Drake Relays

3 in running for county supervisor District 3 seat Incumbent Clarke County Supervisor Marvin McCann is facing challenges from candidates Ray Negley and Derek Lumsden for the supervisor District 3 seat. The election is scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Ray Negley Tell me about yourself/ background. I was born in southern Iowa and have lived here all my life. We were married in 1978 and have three g r o w n Negley children and seven grandchildren. I have worked many different jobs in my youth until 1980 when I started working at Metz Baking Company. After 30 years, I retired from there in January 2010. Metz Baking Company employees were represented by Teamster Union. While working there I became shop steward. I represented the Osceola division for 20 years, negotiating labor contracts and disputes between labor and management. I served on the Osceola Summer Ball board for seven years and held the offices of treasurer, vice president and president in five of those seven years. I have served on the Clarke County Republican Central Committee for 18 years, the last 12 years as chairman, and before that I served as co-chair for two years.

his role in Des Moines at the end of November after concluding work at his current job as executive director of the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon in Indiana. Boldon’s experiences as an athlete and as an event director helped lead him to a job in his home state. “I don’t know if anybody’s prepared to step into this job and be the 12th director of an event that’s existed for 108 years,” Boldon said. “I don’t know if anyone has the up-to-the-minute preparation. I firmly believe no one is better prepared than I am and I’m excited to take the first step.” Boldon takes over as Drake Relays director from Brian Brown. Brown, who

DES MOINES – Running sports have taken Osceola native Blake Boldon to places he could’ve only dreamed up as a student in the Clarke Community School District. Now, he’s returning to his home state to lead one of the most prestigious sporting events in Iowa. held the spot for 12 years, left earlier this year for a job at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Boldon looks forward to building on the work Brown did in leading the Drake Relays. “To have the opportunity and challenge to step into the shoes that Brian Brown has left after his 12 years is exhilarating, scary and the single most thrilling opportunity of my lifetime,” Boldon said. “Brian’s professionalism, his passion for the sport and his vision for this event is unsurpassed.” Boldon said he plans to reach out to Brown in the future. “I look forward to working with Brian to fully understand his vision and con-

tinue it into the future.” Returning to Iowa and becoming director of the Drake Relays wasn’t a tangible idea in Boldon’s mind until the position came open this summer. “It would be akin to saying, ‘Did you grow up wanting to be the king of England or the president of the United States?’ Sure that’s great, but never really a tangible idea until I sat with Sandy (Drake athletic director Sandy Hatfield-Clubb), got to know this event and the community that surrounds it over the last several weeks,” Boldon said. “There’s some familiar faces, some new faces here. I am also a deacon at First Baptist Church in Osceola. If elected, what goals do you have planned in relation to the position? My goal as supervisor will be to find out why Clarke County is the highest-taxed county in the state and still has no money, and then fix the problems that currently exist. The skills I have developed as shop steward and central committee chairman will be a great asset to the Clarke County Board of Supervisors. Is being the highest-taxed county in the state an honor the people really want?

DES MOINES – Nick Johnston of Osceola is barely old enough to vote himself in the upcoming election, but when it comes to winning tightly contested senate races, he understands how to win over voters. Johnston, 18, recently campaigned for and won a seat on the Drake University Student Senate which is reserved for a member of the incoming freshman class. The Student Senate SINGLE COPY PRICE: $1.00

is comprised of 21 senators and executive directors. He spent three days campaigning against six other Drake freshmen and waited through two days of voting before learning he had received the most votes. “I had someone come up to me and offer to be my campaign manager for the election. I quickly found out it is unusual (at Drake) if you don’t have a campaign manager for elections like this,” Johnston said. “A lot of people come to study politics here, so they want to get involved in the elections whether it is running for office or helping people run for office by giving strategy.” The only problem was his total was not enough for a majority, so Johnston had to campaign for two more Contributed photo days in a runoff election.
